lemonhorse
Note: Amiga + the Sound Chip "Paula""Paula is primarily the sound chip in the Amiga, capable of playing 4 channel 8bit stereo sound, however it is also the floppy drive controller." http://www.amiga-society.de/ahwbook/paula.htmlhttp://www.ntrautanen.fi/computers/hardware/misc/paula.htm - greetingslemonhorse
Guest cem3340
Firstly, Vic 20 sound is very simple squarewave only device (like most early comp sound)Secondly, the sound produced by Paula chip in Amiga has no comparison with the SID. The SID is a TRUE sound synth. The Paula chip produced its sound by getting the Main CPU to do all the work. The Paula chip is not much more than a multiplexed low end audio DAC (digital to analog converter) So yep, in general the sound produced by it was superior to the SID, BUT the sound produced was either samples or using inbuilt routines within Amiga's OS to generate squarewaves etc.Correcting my own statements ;)The statement about the CPU doing all the work is a little misleading. The CPU would shift a block of data into RAM. It would then pass the address pointer of this block to the Paula chip. Paula would then access this wave data and loop or single shot through it via DMA(direct memory access)
