kokoon
i put flooded in quotes because i don't think it's really a flood.if i twiddle a knob on a midi controller too furiously i get the whole thing to stop responding. last note plays on and nothing changes. have to turn it off and back on.since it's not like 10000000 midi CC messages per second i'm assuming something is wrong.now my question would be - is this supposed behaviour? will it be the same with the cs?thanks guys, i just built a mbsid and i LOVE it. but this really bothers me. pwx
hi!I´ve got a MBSID with minimal CS,.... and I have this problem only a few times... if I´m carefull and send only the MIDI-Data SID really needs, there´s no problem....Perhaps it´s normal to have a MIDI-hang (sorry, don´t know the right word in English) sometimes..... I think it´s the same with some analog-synths,... sometimes..... Please tell me if I´m wrong!!!hope this helps,..pwx :)
TK.
I don't know this effect, maybe because I'm working with a much more advanced firmware since some months? Are you using the most recent version of MIOS and MBSID?-> http://www.ucapps.de/mios/mios_v1_8.zip-> http://www.ucapps.de/mios/midibox_sid_v1_7_303beta9.zipBest Regards, Thorsten. pwx
Hi Thorsten!I´m using MIOS 1.7,..... :) but it´s really no problem,... I´ve got the same with my Fricke mfb synth 2 ..... one or two times in a whole year,.... and the same with MBSID,... so this should be a `normal` Hardware Problem,... ;DI don´t care about it....... , every hardware Synth has it´s own personallity :oBut I´ll try MIOS v1.8 next week.....greets,pwx
TK.
The difference between MIOS V1.8 and V1.7 isn't so big, so this is not the reason. There was a problem with MIOS V1.6, which is fixed in both versions.Testing the updated MBSID application makes more sense. I always take care that such MIDI overruns never happen, if you've found a way to hang up the MIDI engine, then please send me the appr. patch (but please: try it out with the most recent firmware first)Best Regards, Thorsten. kokoon
i'm running MIOS 1.8 and SID 1.7a.i'll try with the new SID app.but - in short - what happened:i have this M-AUDIO radium49 and it has a terribly slow pot readout refresh rate - if i turn a pot quickly i only get 5 or so values. even only 1 if i try really hard. so i made a patch in pd which interpolates incomming midi controller values so i can use my radium. the patch works fine. i thought until now :)
kokoon
okay i tested this with MIOS 1.8 and SID 1.7 303beta9it's still happening but only with 8580. the second core+sid 6581 is okay. hmm if you want i can send you a screenshot of midiox out-monitor. but it's really not that interesting - just a few CC sends for filter cutoff... kokoon
any ideas TK? i found out that i have to re-upload SID application everytime it freezes... and it also happens with pitchshifts (if there are many)... will this happen with the control surface too? TK.
I wasn't able to reproduce the error yet, maybe it only happens at certain patches? Which patch are you using exactly?Best Regards, Thorsten.
kokoon
just anything really. i uploaded mios, then uploaded sid (latest version) and i just press a key on my keyboard and send a stream of CCs... and i'm there.is it possible that the sid chip is faulty? cause as it is now it really isn't very usable via midi. strange thing though - the jsynth tweaking is smooth enough and it never freezes. maybe jsynth works with sysex? TK.
Yes, JSynthLib works with SysEx... the SID chip shouldn't cause such a problem, because there is no feedback to the core. Means: regardless if a SID is connected or not, the application should never freeze.I've really no idea what should cause such a scenario, just let me some days, maybe I will be able to reproduce this sooner or later... if anybody else but kokoon and pwx is able to stimulate the hang-up, please let me know.Best Regards, Thorsten. tarzan boy
i just got my first 6581R2 running this morning and I have a similar problem I thought i would contribute to maybe help solve a potential problem. I'm using mios 1.8 and sid1.7a as well, and using Jsynthlib (the only way i have right now of changing the sounds predictably) if I make some drastic changes in envelope, modulation matrix, or oscillation settings (transpose, etc) my sid starts to whine a high pitch in between every note. when i stop sending any midi data the high pitch just stays there. I have to use jsynthlib to reload a patch in order for the high pitch to stop.
kokoon
i don't think that's the same problem tarzan boy... mine freezes completely at the note it was playing and i have to turn it off and back on.TK: if there's no feedback from the SID chip to core then is it maybe possible that the SID itself freezes? well it doesn't freeze completely since the osc's are still running... let me know what to prepare (sound sample of the freeze, screenshot of midiox output, ...) and i'll make it and send it to you (or post it here)
TK.
my sid starts to whine a high pitch in between every note. when i stop sending any midi data the high pitch just stays there.thats a 6581 typical problem, see also http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php?topic=5373.0So, it seems that Kokoon is currently the only one who notice such problems... TK: if there's no feedback from the SID chip to core then is it maybe possible that the SID itself freezes? well it doesn't freeze completely since the osc's are still running...There is only one scenario where the SID oscillator can lock up, and this happens when noise is selected together with another waveforms. But this illegal mode is prevented by the MBSID firmware, and I'm very very sure that it cannot happen (I'm doing SID sound design very often, I should notify such errors...)let me know what to prepare (sound sample of the freeze, screenshot of midiox output, ...) and i'll make it and send it to you (or post it here)A sound sample and the MIDI input trace (via MIDI-Ox) could be interesting. Are you able to reproduce this problem with one of the default patches, or did you create a special patch?Best Regards, Thorsten.P.S.: I will be quite busy in the next weeks, therefore please forgive the high delays between the answers... kokoon
i don't deal with "patches" (or at least i think i don't) - i can load the MBSID application and just run the sequencer and the freeze occurs. (as i just found out) - samples coming right now.
kokoon
okay this is what's happening:i re-loaded the MBSID freshly. then i started the audio recording and cleared midi (output) monitor. then i played some random notes (TS 28712 - TS 34853) then i pressed "back" in midi sequencer (to reset to position zero - and apparently set all controlers to zero), pressed+released another note, and then started the sequencer. (TS 39775). it played almost a whole loop but then froze @ TS 40663 (bold). the "okay" notes are light color, the critical note is bolded black, the ignored are normal black.here's an mp3 audio of this phenomenon.http://s4.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0NZUVDCO85YMZ0R80LP6KZRPZVand this is the midi-ox dump of the output monitor (color-coded by hand):[tt] TIMESTAMP IN PORT STATUS DATA1 DATA2 CHAN NOTE EVENT 28577 2 14 144 47 127 1 B 2 Note On 28712 2 14 144 47 0 1 B 2 Note Off 29397 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 29519 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 30220 2 14 144 55 127 1 G 3 Note On 30271 2 14 144 55 0 1 G 3 Note Off 30617 2 14 144 49 127 1 C# 3 Note On 30714 2 14 144 49 0 1 C# 3 Note Off 31400 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 31591 2 14 144 57 127 1 A 3 Note On 31852 2 14 144 57 0 1 A 3 Note Off 31943 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 32491 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 32688 2 14 144 57 127 1 A 3 Note On 32897 2 14 144 57 0 1 A 3 Note Off 33078 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 33536 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 33902 2 14 144 57 127 1 A 3 Note On 34145 2 14 144 57 0 1 A 3 Note Off 34286 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 34607 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 34706 2 14 144 57 127 1 A 3 Note On 34841 2 14 144 57 0 1 A 3 Note Off 34853 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 37195 2 14 176 123 0 1 --- CC: All Notes Off 38323 2 14 144 45 127 1 A 2 Note On 38440 2 14 144 45 0 1 A 2 Note Off 39775 2 14 176 123 0 1 --- CC: All Notes Off 39787 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 39910 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 39910 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 40037 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 40038 2 14 144 42 127 1 F# 2 Note On 40158 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 40192 2 14 128 42 0 1 F# 2 Note Off 40286 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 40286 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 40413 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 40413 2 14 144 30 127 1 F# 1 Note On 40537 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 40562 2 14 128 30 0 1 F# 1 Note Off 40663 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 40663 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 40785 2 14 144 54 127 1 F# 3 Note On 40821 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41032 2 14 128 54 0 1 F# 3 Note Off 41033 2 14 144 42 127 1 F# 2 Note On 41164 2 14 128 42 0 1 F# 2 Note Off 41164 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 41284 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41284 2 14 144 39 127 1 Eb 2 Note On 41412 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 41441 2 14 128 39 0 1 Eb 2 Note Off 41534 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41534 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 41659 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41659 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 41691 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41691 2 14 176 123 0 1 --- CC: All Notes Off 41785 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 41911 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 41911 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 42032 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 42032 2 14 144 42 127 1 F# 2 Note On 42161 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 42191 2 14 128 42 0 1 F# 2 Note Off 42286 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 42286 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 42412 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 42412 2 14 144 30 127 1 F# 1 Note On 42538 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 42567 2 14 128 30 0 1 F# 1 Note Off 42659 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 42659 2 14 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 42752 2 14 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 42752 2 14 176 123 0 1 --- CC: All Notes Off [/tt]
TK.
Thats a very uncritical timing, I've still no explanation. Even if your MIDI interface sends an invalid MIDI frame (e.g. due to a slightly different baudrate, or spikes on the transmission line), the PIC should regognize this, it should set an error flag, which thereafter should lead to a MIDI timeout in MIOS.Could you please try to reproduce this again? Thereafter use the RAM Readout function of MIOS Studio to dump out the RAM content from 0x000-0x600. Please also post the MIDI-Ox Logfile again. This should give me an overview of the system state, when this happensBest Regards, Thorsten.P.S.: your sequencer sends an "all notes off" (CC#123) when you stop it - thats bad for the MBSID, since CC#123 controls Parameter#3 of the wavetable sequencer. However, this is not the problem here... but maybe it's better to turn off (or filter out) this option to avoid interferences with the sound patch

TK.
Ok, what I've seen so far: the note stack for osc1is located at 0x15c-0x15f:0150: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1E 00 00 00 1E 00 00 00The first position of the stack contains "1E", which means, that note 1E = C-2 is playedUnfortunately the logfile doesn't show a Note Off... ok,so let's assume that at this time the MIDI transferwas already stucked. Let's search for more informations...The MIDI In Buffer is located at 0x500-0x53f0500: 00 00 7E 40 00 0D 02 00 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 000510: 00 00 F7 2F 35 B0 2F 35 B0 2F 35 B0 2F 35 B0 2F0520: 35 B0 2F 35 B0 2F 35 B0 2F 34 B0 2F 34 B0 2F 340530: 80 24 00 90 1E 7F B0 2F 34 B0 2F 34 B0 2F 34 F0The last received events before the SysEx Request (whichbegins at 0x53f) are: 80 24 00 90 1E 7F B0 2F 34 B0 2F 34 B0 2F 3480 24 00: thats a note-off message for F#290 1E 7F: thats a note-on message for C-2B0 2F 34: thats CC#47, Dec-Value 52B0 2F 34: thats CC#47, Dec-Value 52B0 2F 34: thats CC#47, Dec-Value 52F0 ...: SysEx message (RAM read) begins hereCC#47 (Resonance parameter) is a 4bit SID register,it's located at 0x117, bit 4-7:0110: 00 08 00 00 F0 03 06 61 1F 0A 00 BC 9D 00 01 02bit 4-7 of 0x117 is: 6The 4-bit value of the received CC#52 is: 52 >> 3 = 6In other words: the last MIDI events which were received by the MBSID are stored correctly. There isan active C-2 note, can you confirm this?Ok, lets search for the logfile entry where F#2/C-2 wassent, and thereafter 3 times a CC#47 with value 52:Hm... and here I have a problem: the last combinationI found was: 497465 2 -- 128 42 0 1 F# 2 Note Off 497466 2 -- 144 36 127 1 C 2 Note On 497468 2 -- 176 47 110 1 --- Control Change 497474 2 -- 176 47 110 1 --- Control ChaCC#47 is 110, and not 52So, I'm missing something in the logfile. Maybe this wasalso lost... (there is a character limit in the forum)but now you should know, which informations are interesting for me: the events at exactly the point where the note gets stuckedHowever, another point: During the analysis I remembered that a friend has a similar problem with his M-Audio Delta1010Soundcard/MIDI Interface. Once a lot of MIDI traffic is sentout, the interface stucks and he had to reboot his PC.I don't want to say that you've exactly the same problem(because of two things: you don't need to reboot your PC,and you are still able to send SysEx data)... but driver bugsare things which have to be considered. Therefore not only an updated logfile (which shows the interesting moment) could be useful, but also the resultsof a loopback test. You can do this in the following way: after the SID stucked, enable the MIDI merger via MIOS-Studio (select theMIOS_MIDI_MergerSet command and send WREG=0x01". Thereaftersend some notes to the core module and check if they arereceived back. Do the same test after power-on of themodule (doublechecking)If you don't receive any MIDI data back from the coremodule when MIDI merger is enabled, you know that yourMIDI interface doesn't send any CC/Note values anymoreAnother point: it could be, that sending a SysEx message"resets" your MIDI interface. In this case followingadditional tests would be interesting:- enable MIDI merger via MIOS-Studio, thereafter try toget the MBSID stucking again, thereafter check if MBSID still returns the sent events (if not, you arevery sure that Notes/CCs are not sent by the MIDI interface anymore)- once MBSID doesn't react anymore, send a SysEx message(e.g. MIDI Merger enable, or RAM read), and thereaftersend a Note-Off event of the note which got stuck. Ifthis works, then you know that a SysEx message resetsyour MIDI interface... in this case I would say, that itis definitely a bug in the driver of your interfaceAny new inputs?Best Regards, Thorsten. kokoon
hmm thanks alot for the in-depth comment and analysis. i'll try some more stuff tomorrow.another thing that got lost 2 posts ago (got cut off) - is it possible that lack of midi-in gnd connection is the fault for all this?is it possible that a hardware fault (a bad solder joint?) is causing such an error?okay on to the point. there really isn't a F#2off C-2on and three times CC#47 value 52 in the stream, i've checked both output dump of midiox and input dump and there simply isn't such combo. i guess it's safe to assume that the core got something else than i was trying to send it (correct me if i'm wrong)though there's a 496335 2 -- 128 36 0 1 C 2 Note Off 496335 2 -- 144 42 127 1 F# 2 Note On 496341 2 -- 176 47 52 1 --- Control Change 496341 2 -- 176 47 52 1 --- Control Change 496355 2 -- 176 47 52 1 --- Control Change but from the looks of "80 24 00" and "90 1E 7F" i assume the last byte of each is velocity (first one is off and the second one is on-127) so i guess there's no mistake on your analysis :).about the note C-2 being stuck - i'm really not sure... i remember it was something not too high and not too low so i guess it's pretty possible it was C-2. but not for sure. i'll record it all for the next test and i'll choose the test notes and controller values more carefully.also - i'll try another midi interface i have (an M-AUDIO radium) and maybe i'll find out that one's okay... hmmm why the hell haven't i thought about that before?! actually it's quite possible that the ancient roland midi adapter i'm using mixes some stuff up!i'll check it out in the morning and report back. i hope it wasn't such a stupid mistake :-[ :-[ :-[
