Why rotary encoders, not motor turnpots?

:-/ Why does everyone use rotary encoders, at around $11 US when motorised turnpots would be better, no LED's to worry about, and they cost $4 US !!!!! well, maybe it's cos there is no touch sensor? ???

I have thought about doing the motorized turnpots, but I believe the cheaper ones have a really slow turn rate, which would make them unuseable for realtime. I have seen some fast ones, but I think they are almost twice as much as the motor faders.

I agree; the ones I have found take around 8 seconds from min to max which is pretty slow. also it would be alot of effort for something which is achieved very well with the encoders??

Would be kinda cool tho  :D

Hey! u are right! they are slo! I forgot about that!(maybe I'll just have another row of motorfaders (sliders) instead of 8 rotary encoders!!)

LO, btw, how are your panasonics going? do they work well? Was it much hassle to set them up? is the lack of touch sensitivity a hassle? how many controls are there on your box?

from Steve..... have fun with your midi stuff! ;D

I don't know where you have to pay $11 for encoders, but I can get them in Holland for "only" €2,80 and that's considered quite expensive ???

I think you misread something or haven't searched good enough, there has to be a cheaper source of electonical stuff where you live...

yeah my motorfaders are working well, no hassle to set up, and no touch sensor is no problem for me. I think perhaps they could be even better with a little fine tuning/calibration as I have not messed around with the individual speeds (I think I might need to wait until the option for calibration from with in the menu is available.)

The faders themselves have a real nice smooth action and nice long travel.

I am running 8 motorfaders. But Ian Hurlock has just got 16 of them!

Im happy tho.

Koool! thanks for the replies guys! ::)

LO, did you do the motorfader extension project? or one of the newer ones with LC/Mackie/Houston emulation?

as for the prices Notherndude, thanks! I'll pull out my Farnell catalogue, and see how they compare to those prices you quoted! :P

bye, from Steve ::) ;)
