I'm not sure if this question has been posed yet, but is it possible to use the PIC18LF instead of the PIC18F??

On another note -  Is the Core design for the 18F the same as for the 16F?

Yes, the PIC18LF452 is ok, it's nearly the same like a common PIC18F452, but the temperature range meets only the industrial conditions (-40°C .. 85°C instead of -40°C .. 125 °C). However, the PIC doesn't get hot like a pentium CPU, so don't hesitate to order this one! :)
