yatagarasu Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Hey Guys. I'm looking to get a new sequencer. I need something with a rediculously high note-capacity. My songs have about 8 simultaneous tracks and thousands of CC and SysEx changes. 1 song was too much for the QY100's internal note capacity.I think a sampler might be the only way to go. But I want something, anything, that can record and playback monolithic midi information with 60,000+ note ("event") capacity. I write music in a really freeform way, so I don't want to mess with pattern-based editing. I just want to dump and go. Something readily available and with smart media storage would be a big plus, too. Any ideas? Thanks! Quote
Echopraxia Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Well the new MPC uses smart media for storage and I think the note capacity is very high aswell. The nice thing about the mpc is that you can record pattern based or just record untill you say stop. Hope that helps. I assume this is just for dumping your Cubase, protools ect tracks to something that is not a computer? I personally don't have one but let me know how it works out if you decide to try it. Quote
yatagarasu Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 I assume this is just for dumping your Cubase, protools ect tracks to something that is not a computer? Bingo! Recording till' I say stop is what I'm after. I'm going to try an MPC1000 (MPC500 if I can't find a cheap one), I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks! Quote
stryd_one Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Try the kawai Q-80/q80ex/q80exe or roland MC-50/mc80/mc80ex or one of the more serious yamaha QY series. Those older MPC's are more inline with the baby QY you already have. Quote

I'm not giving mine up until I die, though - it's just that good. Quote
yatagarasu Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 Try the kawai Q-80/q80ex/q80exe or roland MC-50/mc80/mc80ex or one of the more serious yamaha QY series. Those older MPC's are more inline with the baby QY you already have. All of those but the MC80 look like they have around the same capacity as the QY. Am I missing something? The MPCs have as much note ("event") capacity as any of the Roland MCs. The only thing the MC seems to be beating it in is "Direct from disk playback" which is, if it's what I think it is, a winning factor here! Quote
yatagarasu Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 Ok, I guess what I missed is ppq resolution..MPC only gets 96..I found some cheap RMX1s, though. Might go with that. What do you guys think of those? It's basically a bulked up QY, if I understand it right. Quote
stryd_one Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Yes, the MC80 is a special animal ;) But there's a fair difference between the capacities of the other models I listed. The Q-80 has half the ram of the EX and that has half of the exe, for example.Yes, the MC50 at least will play direct from a 720k floppy. No you can't have mine ;)The RM1X is pretty nice too... But I have to wonder... Why not midibox it? Quote
Echopraxia Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Styrd I was under the assumption that the MBSEQ 3 can't do straight midi dumps. Correct me if i am wrong. I was wondering the same thing about droping logic, cubase and protool tracks thru midi dumpage to the MBSEQ. I think currently you have to do it track by track in sync right? Quote
stryd_one Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Yes, but I'm not thinking MBSEQ, I'm thinking User App ;) Quote
yatagarasu Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 What essential modules would be needed for this? Core + Banksticks?A box that just plays back midi tracks, with support for SysEx transmitting. Quote
stryd_one Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Yeh, that's about the size of it! :)It's probably worth adding a DINx* board so you can have a few buttons/encoders if you want... But not a 'must'. Quote

Not a sequencer, but it's a cheap way of recording midi on to SD so that you can play it back. G Quote
yatagarasu Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 Yeah, that thing would work for most of what I need, but I'd like to improvise CC changes over the midi files as they play. Not sure how that would work for Mr. Midi. I'm pretty sure something with MB would be able to handle such a thing no sweat. Quote
