You have no idea how glad I am to see that. nearly 500 posts in a row, ugh!!! Should be back to my normal ridiculous level of posts now ;)

Aaaanyway, a question. When it comes to wiring audio etc:

Red = Right

or

Red = Left

Now, I'm not so much interested in how *you* do it (feel free to tell me anyway), I'm trying to find out if there is a *right* way. I know it doesn't make any difference and the electrons really don't care about the colour of the shielding, but it's one of these things I've always wondered about. I mean... historically speaking, it's always been red = port = left. Look at a boat or aircraft. And it's been that way for centuries.... And if we're talking about stereo, then left = red makes sense too because if a mono jack is inserted then only the left (red) wire is in use, and red is usually the 'active' wire in circuitry land, AFAIK....

But I know that most people, wire red=right. The only logic I can apply to that, is that they both start with 'R'.

Can anyone shed light on this subject?

Right  ;D

Ive checked this the last days when I soldered some cables from PC to Mixer etc...Ive looked inside new cables to compare

so...

Soundcard-output (small stereo-plug to cinch (and/or) mono-plugs) was always the red cinch/plug the right channel...

same with some big plugs 6,3mm (RME-soundcard-out (Stereo) to Mixer (Y-Cable, 2 Mono-Plugs)

Right  ;D

LOL!

But seriously though, it seems crazy to me, to dispense with hundreds of years of protocol, and start doing it a new way, because in some languages, they have the same letter at the start... I can't help but wonder if there is any logic to it but that? Perhaps it's the sheeple factor; one guy didn't know about red=left, did red=right, and everyone else did it because he did....

english: red = right

german: rot = rechts

So, all the important languages are covered. Let's look at the unimportant one ;-)

dutch: rood = recht

french: rouge = dRoite

italian: rossa = destRa

portuguese: veRmelha = diReita

spanish: roja = deRecha

russian: ?P????? ?P???

japanese: ?? = ??

works in almost any language ;-)
