  1. hi, I was wondering if there was any scheme already devised which could provide CV/Gate inputs to the mbSID. I'm not familiar with the input pins on the 6582 itself, so perhaps it's as simple as connecting up to some of them... ? I searched around the forums for cv/gate/midibox and saw something about output, but not input... thanks in advance for your ideas,
  2. I'm using this MIDI jack in the mbSID: Digikey CP-1235-ND (CUI SD-50LS). It fit perfectly into the c64's 2 port holes on the back (i.e. no cutting the c64 case!!) Here's the one I used on the 9090, it's somewhat similar: Mouser 164-2522 (Deltron 651-0500)
  3. hey seppoman' date=' I have this awesome friend with a CNC, he made 2 copies, one for me and one for him. hopefully someday, my box will have a twin. :-) I designed the color scheme using photoshop with art pulled from google, screengrabs from frontpanel designer, photos of the albs.de knobs, crystalfontz images, and other clipart i pulled from various places. i tried about 20 different colorschemes before settling on this mockup. Previsualization is very useful! :)
  4. hey guys, thanks for the kind words! this project was very fun, and now that it's done, damn, i can really see firsthand how cool the mbsid is in sound and function (awesome work TK)! thanks to everyone who has helped me along that way, and TK rules for conceiving of the mbSID, and wilba for simplifying the design into the mb6582, awesome!... Here's my "careful planning" for the wiring: http://www.subatomicglue.com/sidl0g/IMG_3595.JPG My first thought was to pass through all busses (JD8/JD7/JD6/JD5) to each CS module' date=' but I found that only a few wires from each bus was actually needed for most of the cs modules, so it helped to simplify and plan out, especially since I didn't quite have room on a couple of the modules for so many pins. regardless, planning this out ahead of time on paper proved to be a great reference when i actually did the work! I was able to plan the above diagram using Wilba's DIN and DOUT wiring diagrams and thus it matches Wilba's firmware almost verbatim, I only had to change a couple lines in the .asm and recompile for the PgUp/PgDown buttons.
  5. anything ever happen with this group buy? I'd take 2. (or if anyone has a black c64 PSU to sell, PM me, thx).
  6. signed up, doug, thanks. I got an extra 4 6581's here that need a home... :) good excuse for a 2nd mbsid when i'm done with the first.
  7. y0 wilba, what gauge of wirewrap do you buy? http://www.jonard.com/jonard-ecommerce/control/product/~product_id=11016 looks like 24, 26, 28, 30 are the options...
  8. hmm. mostly, I just wanted to support the concept of bankstick, I thought it really cute to use the serial ports as oldschool "usb memory sticks" and since i had the 2 ports just sitting there, i thought why not... :) Also, I can always repurpose the serial port to some external device, if I ever find the need. maybe i'll do 1 external bankstick with a switch between serial1/2 ports, so both chips can have the same address, so 6 internal 1 ensemble, 1 external... or, i can rely on the user (me) to be careful, and only insert one at a time... hahah! thanks for the ideas, I'll chew on that for a while before i go drilling the case for toggle switches. :)
  9. I sort of found some info on this here, but it was a dead link, anyone have this backed up? http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php?topic=387.0 Otherwise, here's my problem: I have 2 external serial ports on the c64 case: 2 extenal banksticks in serial1, and serial2. I have the potential for 8 bankstick eeproms internal... How to get the external ones hooked up? I have 2 ideas: -1- add a 3way switch to switch between serial1, serial2, and one of the internal banksticks. pros: i have full internal storage (8 eeproms), and I can use either of the 2 external serial ports. cons: I have to flick a switch depending on which location I want to write to, complex perhaps... -2- remove 2 internal eeproms (for 6 total internal), address each of the external ones differently, pros: they all work in harmony... both external serial ports can be plugged in at once. cons: I have less internal storage... and one of my banksticks would be at a "non standard address" - Consequence of this is that I couldn't expect to plug this nonstandardly addressed bankstick into a friends mbSID... (since its address may conflict with one of theirs) Questions: 1.) Am I making this more difficult than it is? 2.) which option would you recommend above? 3.) do I really need 8 internal, is 6 enough? 3b.) (but having 2 differently addressed external sticks sounds like a bad idea too, in terms of "standards" would you agree?) 4.) If I were to do switching, how would you wire it? I was thinking of trying to wire just the +voltage for each chip, basically powering up only the chip I want to be active...
  10. Ok, I completed the work on this. I had an epiphany on how to salvage those rs232 housings I had... Maybe this will work for you, or others with the same problem... Description: My rs-232 sticks have an annoying piece of plastic that prevents them from fitting onto the c64 serial ports. So I had to do some modification using some 1/2" 4-40 type flathead machine screws and nuts, counter sinking the female 9-pin piece, and clipping off the offending piece of plastic. See pictures... A finished bankstick. modifying the RS-232 housing to fit flush onto the C64's serial ports. before mod (right), and after mod (left) stuffing the bankstick with an EEPROM chip, using 8pin DIN socket banksticks plugged into the c64 case
  11. hi, i searched the forum, but didn't see any info about this. I have the c64 case, with the 2 serial ports on the side, and I want to make 2 external banksticks. I bought 2 rs232 female assemblies from digikey or mouser a while back, but the formfactor doesn't fit the c64 sockets because of how the plastic protrudes past the end in order to hold the female connector... - Does anyone have a good source for their rs-232 connector? One that would fit the c64 case serial ports? - i'm having trouble even finding this stuff on digikey/mouser again.. :( (what keywords should I be searching for?)
  12. per the other "parts" thread here: http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,10302.0.html I've already emailed Wilba that I am interested in 1 basePCB + 1 set of parts w/ PICs... So I'm in the queue. (happy to be here) I also recently added myself to the megasale list for 8 of the 6582 chips... (also happy to be here)... I plan to put the 6582 board into this: http://www.subatomicglue.com/sidl0g/IMG_3300.JPG I decided to give up on the modules I already have as they're a few years old, quite bulky, requires lots of wires, and i have 4 of the "potentially broken" 6581's and 4 of the older PIC chips... time for a complete upgrade to 8x sid chips, 6582, mb.v2, and a much easier PCB to stuff and maintain and look at when I open the case... so i'll be getting new 6582's, new pics, and this mb6582 base PCB + parts... should make for a clean synth, thanks to everyone's hard work, especially TK, Wilba, SmashTV! (any ideas what to do with my unused modules, PICs, and SID chips, feel free to suggest something over PM...)
  13. >> I also used spray canned paint (for cars) yeah, this shit's durable, i used some on my motorcycle once, it's like the same kind as auto paint, but easy to use in a can. too bad i moved away from the place i knew who would mix any custom color i wanted. need to find a new place. :) sexy orange c64 by the way!
  14. my mc202 plastic melted when I sprayed clear coat onto it (I had a mod with some lettering I was trying to protect)... that's the worst to discover. I'm hoping plastic from that time period isn't all the melty kind or my c64 will have a problem... :'( (obviously not _all_, since your NES painted fine. :) ) will certainly test on the bottom of the case first.
  15. thanks for all the ideas. anyone actually tried any of this? Any idea what the c64 case is made from? (davo suggested nylon dye, but is it nylon?) Sasha. when you use primer + paint. how durable is the paint? does it rub off in time, or flake off? i'm assuming the primer is a special plastic primer?
  16. I'm looking at krylon "fusion". anyone had good/bad results with this kind? got a better idea? I want durable, but I don't want to melt the plastic to goo... ::) stores near me, home depot, walmart, kragen, and the internet... :) I'll be painting the c64 black semigloss/satin . I'm also looking for sportscar orange (see picture): (krylon only makes something called "pumpkin", I doubt it is similar...) thanks for any advice, tips, experience.
  17. well, i talked to the owner, and his line was that he wanted a cool workshop for himself and came up with this scheme to pay for it all (through memberships). i imagine he's seeing some business opportunity (thus the "do you want a techshop in your city?" question)... for the members... yeah, i don't know. i wish there was a forum where i could bug them and ask them questions, would be sweet if i could get a member to "print me" a panel without paying that membership dues... but really, i should go and try it out... the classes alone may be worth it, where else will i learn how to operate laser cutters or cnc machines for $30 a class...
  18. hehe. :) well, america's a big place... i hadn't seen anything like this techshop until i moved to san francisco... as it turns out, lots of tech and hobby opportunities in this area of the country... they're looking to expand their business, maybe you can convince them to open one in serbia? :) check it out: http://techshop.ws/ $100 a month. $1200 a year.
  19. hi, i like that material, looks nice, i'm assuming it's strong and not very flexible? also, i have a beige c64 box... did you paint yours, or was it black to begin with? if you painted it, how durable is the paint on the case, does it chip off showing the beige? i wonder if there's a brown, orange, or red colored "texture" material... that might look nice with the beige case... otherwise, metal, or beige painted metal are what i was thinking, doesn't have to be anodized. though, again, if it was, red or orange would be hot. :) ... i have to wonder what shipping from serbia costs... i'm also going to look into some local places, i found out recently that there's a place called "techshop" here where you can rent their machines for a month for $100, they have laser cutters, mills, etc..
  20. yes i would. it sounds backwards, but i'd be ok modding a panel on my own with 4 holes if it was less $$ and didn't involve me spending a weekend (or week) designing a panel... not that i don't want to, just looking for the best ways to manage my time... so many projects to build and family can command a lot of that time away from projects, (understandably of course)... thanks for the comment about cost, I haven't looked into it yet, but I was reading on here that sometimes there's group discounts, then there's "not having to pay shipping from germany to USA", which would be nice... :) So I thought it would be worth asking, in case someone had a stack of them laying around because of some failed group buy or something... :D
  21. I really don't _need_ V2, assuming V1 is stable, that's just as well to me. :) So if someone was ordering/making c64 styled V1 panels, I'd be game to go in with them on it now... so i read wilba's thread, only a couple posts on V2, but mostly relating to his form factor and design... entirely possible I missed it in the 7 pages... I love his design, and wished it was out the year ago when I bought all my parts. But since I have the smashtv modules already, and since I really like the retro look of the c64 case ... I'm going to do that instead of the sexy PacTec case. as it is I have planned a c64 case, and have obtained a bunch of modules from smash TV + PSU board finished + red waldorf knobs + 4 SIDs + LCD + encoders + various other parts... + a custom built in 4 channel mixer with volume and pan... I may build in distortion/overdrive as well later... So.. I may wait for a while to see if the V2 panel recommendations are final or not... looking at the step C page, there's some V2 stuff there... but maybe more changes will happen later, who knows... might be good to go ahead with plexiglass and my drill/jigsaw for now... and wait for V2 to be released before doing anything about my panel... (i'm going off to read the V2 beta topic now... I didn't notice it until now.)
  22. sounds great, sorry to be redundant. i'll check the other threads for these 2 questions: 1.) will your changelist (listed in step C) to the front panel is finalized or not, if so, i'll start looking into ordering something... 2.) will there be a V2 front panel file posted (for c64 case)?
  23. ok, so that brings up a question, sorry if it's already been answered, i haven't been on these forums in a while... I already have boards from a year ago... will v2 work on them? or will I also need to get new boards? I kind of want to use what I have... thanks for any discussion on this topic... :)
  24. http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid/midibox_sid_cs2.jpg anyone making or ordering this panel (as pictured)? want to group order? let me know, and we can discuss offline... i'm just getting started building and want to get this ball rolling on the panel... I have the c64 case and plan to create a very similar (or same) looking case as pictured... Alternatively, if someone can point me to a place (other than schaefer) that does a good job for less $$$, I'll just submit the files and order it... :-) (i'm in the USA by the way)... If you think "just order it from schaefer"... that's cool, let me know... (I was hoping to avoid shipping cost from germany). thanks for any advice!!!
