  1. I may have sold it, depends on if the guy decides to keep it. I'll post here and let you know if it's sold or not. Thanks.
  2. Not to get too off topic... but it's not a loose connection, because when the case is vented (opened totally, or a small crack, etc.), it works fine for as long as it's plugged in. As soon as you close the case, it starts to reset after the heat has built up sufficiently (15 minutes or so). It's hard to see, but in the current case, there are absolutely no air holes—at the time I didn't realize how hot the sid can get! I will be listing it soon for the cost of the components and I'll be throwing in a couple of cores I didn't use and some other assorted parts that would be helpful in putting it into a new case. Thanks to everyone for their input!
  3. So is that a yes or a no or ? Thanks! :twitch:
  4. That would be awesome! I've used Max4Live a little bit and it has been great—it would be great to have that for the MB-6582. Unfortunately, I'm a novice at Max, so I can't be of much help, except I would be happy to test anything out! Keep us updated on your progress (if you get that far!).
  5. Sorry... typo. Should be fixed now!
  6. Hello... I just finished (well, I'm really, really close, just waiting on some dual gang pots!) my stereo MB 6582 which I love but now I won't be using my SID V1 that I made a few years ago. So, I would like to request permission to sell my SID V1 on the Midibox forum. If approved, what's a reasonable price for it? All parts were bought from Smash TV (and the LCD from Crystal Fontz) and I pulled the 6581 from a commodore 64 I purchased for $40.00. I don't have a SID power supply for it, so it is currently powered by two wallwarts. It's in a case I made myself, but the case needs vents added to it because it gets too hot and restarts the PIC (or it just needs a new case). Thank you for your consideration and assistance. Here's a photo (it now has a knob on the menu encoder)
  7. Looks like I fixed it somehow? Taking the SIDs in and out one last time seems to have done the trick. Huh. Well, if it keeps working, I'm happy!
  8. is so close to finishing the MB 6582 I can almost taste all 8 bits...

  9. First, thank you to everyone! I've managed to almost finish my MB 6582 by only searching the forum and using the other Midibox sites (of couse, I have made a SID V1 before)! I'm really close, here's my situation. The control surface works great, no problems at all. I'm using two SIDS, I've got the left channel sounding good, but the right channel is really quiet and very very crackly (and sometimes silent, like on the first lead patch). I've found similar posts but can't seem to solve the problem for my particular situation. Just measuring voltage differences between U2_SID1 and U1_SID1 I've found these inconsistencies: U2_SID1: pin 14: 2.46 pin 25: 6.09 U1_SID1: pin 14: 0.01 pin 25: 6.09 R22_SID1: 5.08 R2_SID1: 0.00 Any ideas or suggestions on what to check? Is the SID dead? Which SID is the right audio channel? I tried re-heating/soldering the U1_SID1 socket joints but that didn't seem to do anything. Thank you in advance for your help!
  10. Count me in for a complete order... I'm also in California.
  11. Go through the software setup carefully. I don't remember my exact setup, but I remember installing plumstone, I used Mios Studio for uploading to the core and I think I also used Midi Monitor to see what was going on in general with midi and my computer.
  12. Definitely go through the midi trouble shooting guide, 2 or 3 times (or more) carefully. I went through it several times and took a break (sometimes a few days or weeks break can really help with problem solving—and your social life!). Then I got back to it someone suggested the optocoupler and it worked. But stryd_one is right, you don't want to start throwing tons of parts at it until you're satisfied that you've isolated the problem. Which is key: isolate the problem. I would say, the biggest thing is to be methodical and don't jump ahead of yourself until you're satisfied with your test results. Take notes if you need to. Keep at it, it may take a while but eventually you'll get it.
  13. point taken! just offering my experience. I seem to remember this part causing a lot of problems in the past. But obviously, many things could cause this, so by all means, follow the tests, post the logs, etc. Just something to consider.
  14. Sounds like the problem I had... could be a bad optocoupler. It's a pretty easy/cheap thing to try. Also, I use a mac, and once I fixed the optocoupler, no more problems!
  15. Just using two wall warts, one for the SID one for the Core. In the photo I only have the one plugged in for the core. Makes it a little more photogenic ;) !
  16. :) No, I hadn't seen that one, but I have since seen a few with the same general idea (but mine was inspired by the artist Joseph Cornell's "Cornell Boxes"). Great minds think alike! Plus, I think us midiboxers like to show off all of our hard work! If anyone else is interested in a similar mounting scheme, it's a $5.00 shadow box from everyone's favorite Swedish friend (plus some fancy veneer work ;) ). Oh, and it is mounted to the wall (the reason I came up with this solution—I wanted to hang it on the wall behind my keyboard!).
  17. Hey Everyone, Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. Here's a photo of the finished SID: ;D
  18. I've got two if you want them... I was going to build another SID, but I think one is enough!
  19. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Success! It was a bad optocupler!
  20. So, I got the new core from SmashTV (18f452 with BSL v 1.2B and MIOS v1.9F). I put it in, re-wired the core so that the IIC was no longer connected and the midi out was connected to the core midi out instead. I get the "ready" message on the LCD, but when I try to upload the sid program, still no feedback from the core after the first chunk of code is uploaded. But now I have the core spitting this out (endlessly): and this is the error I get when I try to upload the sid program: Any ideas on what to check/test? Thanks!!!
  21. Hey everyone, Thanks again for the help! I did have SmashTV change the pic to the correct header for the IIC module. I checked the J3 jumpers, and they're both stuffed correctly. I ordered the other pics from SmashTV to see if that fixes it.
  22. So after an 8 or 9 month break I'm back at the SID (I feel I'm really close!): Core from Smash Mouth: PIC 18F4620, BSL v. 1.2, MIOS v. 1.9c Sid: V1 What is working so far: My LCD is working, backlit and all. It says "Ready" I setup Miosstudio with the proper connections and I've got Midi successfully coming out of my computer. I've done all of the voltage/ground checks in the Midi Trouble shooting guide. It all checks out. I checked the Midi In plug and it's correctly connected (same with the Midi out on the IIC Midi module) If I send midi I can make an LED blink at the "Midi In" on the core. My Problem: If I try to upload the sid program with feedback from the core on, it stops after the first small chunk of code. I've read somewhere on this site, that that's a common problem. Is there a way around it? Can I have SmashTV just send me a PIC with the sid program already on it? If I turn feedback from the core off, when the upload is finished, it restarts the core as it's supposed to, but the LCD still says "ready." Some other strange behaviors I've noticed: Last night after trying to upload a bunch of times, measuring some voltages, playing with LEDs on the Midi connections the IIC Midi module started turning on it's activity light for long periods of time (although I wasn't seeing any Midi coming in in Miosstudio). Then the core would re-start, sometimes hanging up at the copyright/date notice. Anyone have any thoughts on what to check? Is the PIC messed up? Thanks!
  23. ??? Thanks for the suggestions... it seems to be something stranger (or perhaps this is documented somewhere else on the forum?) problem than that. It's working again. This morning, I decided to plug it in and see what happens, and sure enough, it's showing "Ready" again on the LCD. Could it be somethng to do with restarting my computer or something else? Not sure what's going on. I'll post again if it happens and what I did to get it to work again. Thanks again for the help.
  24. So I added a little juice from my power supply (10v ac) and I got the LCD working (thanks to help from stryd_one). So I went onto the next step and tried to upload the sid application. When that finished (I had to turn off the "automatic" mode in MIOSStudio in order to get it to finish the upload) the LCD went back to my old problem of the squares across the top row (as if MIOS wasn't installed, but it is). Any ideas on what I did and what I should try? Tried turning the power on/off but that didn't do anything. If I'm using the 18F4620 pic (from smashtv: BSL 1.2, MIOS 1.9c), could it be that I need to hook up the I2C board I made (I was waiting until I got the core and sid working but maybe that's not correct and would fix this?). Thanks for your help! ???
