wow, just noticed you seem to have a blue LCD screen with a RED backlight...how did you manage that? I didn't know such a thing was available?

A suitable method of storing SID chips?
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Tips & Tricks
hehe, ok, fair point :) Im guessing I could get it from tandy/dick smith electronics? (or is noone on here from the land of OZ? :P) -
that is incredibly cool :) Its not a dig by any means...but are you actually going to use that many? or is this more a test to see how far you can push the core unit? wouldn't that chew up a whole bucketload of power?

A suitable method of storing SID chips?
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Tips & Tricks
haha, sounds like a fair amount of effort...what if I just bung it in an antistatic bag and put it where nothing can be put near it to bend the pins? -
A suitable method of storing SID chips?
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Tips & Tricks
when you say foam, do you mean ACTUAL foam? because my original intention was to stick it into a little block of styrofoam...then I read someone writing on here that it could build up static that way? -
VERY impressive :) how did you colour the enclosure? Spraypaint?

So I have a first gen. Commodore 64 in the mail on its way to me to be ripped apart :) I am not going to be using the SID chip for a while (this C64 is only going to be used for its casing for a MB64) but I want to keep the SID chip for a later date when I have a go at making a MBSID. I built a computer mid last year, and have a bucketload of anti-static bags laying around from the soundcard/graphics card/HDDs/ several PCI Cards.... can these be used to store the SID chip? This may be an incredibly dumb question, but I wasnt sure if you could re-use these bags...or put something into them that has been out in the atmosphere (maybe it already has a slight charge built up or something...i dont know...newbie afterall) but yea....its not urgent, I was just curious :) PS. apologies if this is in the wrong place, really couldn't think of where else on the forum to ask.

count me in too if you make a batch, id say you will get a heck of alot of interest if you do.

A few newbie questions regarding MidiboxSIDs :)

Alternatively, does that mean I could get a stereo bassline with one core and two sid chips? :) That box you made is immaculate....absolutely astonishing attention to detail mate :) -
A few newbie questions regarding MidiboxSIDs :)
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in MIDIbox SID
ahh, ok, and the SID modules are physically separate? I thought I saw a picture of someone using a single PCB with 8 SID chips in it? or was that a custom job? -
hey all, just wanted to ask a few quick newbie questions regarding SIDs :) 1: If using multiple SID chips, they would all obviously need to be 1st gen OR 2nd gen im guessing? due to voltage differences, you wouldnt be able to have a mish-mash of different kinds? 2: I know you can have a single chip, or 2 for stereo, or 8 as I've seen the insane version of a SID box with...but could you have say....4....2 x stereo bass lines? or 5 so one does drums or something? basically, can you have any number from 1 to 8? 3: Compared to a Midibox64...REALISTICALLY....how hard is the circuitry in a SID box for a newbie to put together? Thanks guys, appreciate it.

That is VERY cool :) and very inspiring to make a mbSID after my 64 :) and as someone said...that really seems in no way a "demo" and in every way an awesome song :)

is it possible to run some form of electrical component in series with their power to limit their supply so they glow less brightly and chew up less power? Is that what perhaps a resistor may do? Id rather have alot of them glowing dull-ly instead of a few glowing brightly..then I can get a more uniform wash of light thru the perspex
-
hahaha yea, maybe not 50 :) I'm buying a pack of 200 of them though...so its not like I need to be sparing with them! :) but yea, will they be usable?

Planning out the cosmetics of a Midibox64 and Im looking at having a design in the back of it that will glow with UV leds. will the following be suitable to be powered off the voltage inside a midibox? (I dont understand all the nitty gritty yet :) ) Specifications: Material: InGaN Emitting Colour: purple/violet Lens Type: water clear Reverse Voltage: 5.0 V [ 1/4W,470ohm resistor is needed ] DC Forward Voltage: Typical: 1.9 V Max: 2.3 V Wave Length: 625-635nm Luminous Intensity MCD: Typ: 3,000 mcd DC Forward Current: 20mA Viewing Angle: 12±5degree Lead Soldering Temp: 260oC for 5 seconds Intensely Bright Im planning to run maybe 50 of them around a piece of frosted perspex and have them shining in from the edges, with a second set only on when a midi signal is detected going in/out. If that doesnt exactly make sense I can explain it a bit more clearly but basically the main thing I want to know is will these work in a midibox? :)

Idea for a random little project

excellent! :) thanks for the advice! I may put this plan on the back burner for a few months though, as I have decided to definately start work on building a midibox64 first :) -
Quick question regarding knobs for pots...
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Parts Questions
hehe, my mistake :) when I first came on here i searched for him as I thought it was a store and eventually found avistech (if thats his site?) and figured it must have been what i was looking for anyways :) -
Idea for a random little project

hehe, the song is something I started working on a few days ago... :) heres a question for you (and a little background info first). Im studying music (in the main field of production) at university. We are currently learning all about Max/MSP... would it be possible to use this to control it? or does it have to be run in C? I have done like...html coding before...and a tiny bit of java and actionscripting.....and of course Max/MSP...but never any C... is it entirely essential? or can I get by with using other peoples pre-compiled code? -
Quick question regarding knobs for pots...
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Parts Questions
well, I won the carbon fibre sheeting so its a go'er! :) I also found another listing for the knobs, so I dont have to decide quickly now on which ones I like. What are the pots on smashTV like for smoothness? Im thinking about maybe spending a little extra (only going to have maybe 12 pots for simplicity's sake) and getting good quality ones...or would I not notice the difference between those and the ones on futurlec? Basically, I have been using a Novation ReMOTE 25 (not mine) for a while, and I would want pots more or less equal to their smoothness....they are excellent to use... -
So I recently bought myself an oil-wheel projector light as I saw one going for cheap on ebay (possibly the coolest purchase of my life)...for those who dont know what this is, heres a quick video I made to show a friend who lives overseas: This has got me thinking about lighting effects and stuff, and after reading someone else's post regarding using Midio for controlling LEDs...it got me wondering. How hard would it be to make some form of midibox that takes midi data from a separate track in a program...say ableton live (or even a drum machine? I have a spare tr-626 that would be perfect) and the midi data can be wired into some form of lighting? perhaps purchase 3 or 4 of the small strobes that go for sale on ebay, and have these wired up to kick etc. (go the ghetto route and put coloured celophane(sp?) over the lens to give different colours). Fairly rough description of what I'm thinking, plz pull me up if it doesnt make sense and I will attempt to make it a tad more concise. But yea...possible? worth the effort? I think it would be...especially for those who cant afford actual lighting sequencer machine thingy rentals for gigs....

apologies for the silly question, but what exactly are these? fittings that fit over switches so when you click the switch an led's light refracts through and makes the icecube glow? sort of like a switch with a light in them? or am I totally off the mark?

Question regarding LCD display for a Midibox64
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Parts Questions
cheers mate :) after all that I've decided I'm going to go with this LCD instead: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=230252599696 mainly due to price, the other one is somewhere around 20 dollars (US i assume) not including postage, whereas that one I can get for around 12 dollars AU including postage :) can always swap them over later on if Im not happy with this one anyway, although it looks to be ok, unless anyone knows something about that brand/style that is dodgey? -
Quick question regarding knobs for pots...
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Parts Questions
really? the advertisement says they are for split shaft pots? i assumed that was the futurlec pots were? -
I'v read through the LCD module writeup on uCapps, and from what I can see using the standard MIOS there is no point getting a bigger screen than 2x16 for the Midibox64...is this correct? If so, Would the following screen be suitable? it can be found here: http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/1602a-color/index.html part number: CFAH1602A-AGH-JT (the second orange one, the first one has been discontinued) I can't see on their site whether their LCD displays are HD44780 compliant? as I've noticed a few other people mention crystalfontz on here in the past though I'd assume this is going to be useable? any help is much appreciated :) EDIT: I did some more searching on the site and found out this display IS HD44780 compliant. I assume this means it is useable? Do I need to do anything out of the ordinary to use THIS lcd display? thanks :)

Newbie question regarding pots and faders
unrise_lyrical replied to unrise_lyrical's topic in Parts Questions
cool, thanks for your help mate! i will go with the cheap ones for now :) like you said they will still do the job, and if this midibox goes well i can look into a second (more grand!) one with more exxy components :) thanks again! appreciate it!
