I made a 1U frontpanel and back panel design in FPD a while back.
However i made it as cheap as possible (I figured i could do an inlay myself). If possible i want to see if i can get 2 GM5x5x5 shoved in there. Which might be possible if you mount one upside down.
I will have to see, if it will actually fit if i receive my case from modushop (NorthernLightx and me bought some cases together) So i don't have a propper layedout backpanel design yet. There is enough room on the front for 1 midi in/out.
The mounting holes are specific for this case.
Personally i am not a fan of the USB on the front. But i can imagine that for you laptop users, it might be convenient.

@shuriken: I found on Wikipedia that in TTL, anything between 2V4 and 5V. So I'm hopeful that it will work just fine.
That would be my suggestion.
Martijn, using an op amp is not the way to go here, all that is needed is a couple of inverters.
Take a good look at the design of the GM voice, this uses two NAND gates with inputs tied together.
I am in the process of uploading all my stuff on this so far, if you can't wait, google "sparx plays up the junction".
Give me a day or so and I'll post it all.

The NAND gates in the GM Voice do the TTL to Midi conversion. However Martijn is looking for a TTL Level Gate something like this to get from 3,3V to 5V TTL.

It appears that the nec xr385 uses midi out as a midi thru. Not sure whether it is necessary, don't think so.
But how to connect the card to the core? Just wire midi out 4 (from the j4b port) to the midi in of the soundboard? Or is it better to put the midi out / midi in infra with the 220Rs, an opto etc?
Functionally it looks redundant: TTL-> midi -> TTL, but on the other hand, this may be necessary for decoupling? Please shine your light on this.
Looks like you are right. I only checked my Korg en Terratec board, but with the NEC it seems to be used. I would do TTL. However i am not sure if that will work with the LPC17 as it's 3,3V. The boards expect 5V TTL.
So port J4B and then connect SD & SC and VS. You should connect VS to digital ground.

TTL Midi Out won't be necessary. I have to come across the first board that supports Midi Out.

I'm trying to upload MB SEQV4L app (version 058) onto the LPC17 board, but I get the following error message:
ERROR: in line 4098: address 0x000000aa already allocated!As far as I can tell, the MIOS32 bootloader is up and running (3 led flashes), and MIOS studio recognises it as well. I don't know if it might have something to do with it that I tried uploading a non-hex file (i.e. a text file named as project.hex) in connection with the Midibox sample player user project as a means to circumvent the need to learn how to use svn to download the sample project hex file.
I also tried - just to try something - to re-flash MIOS32 bootloader with LPCxpress, but that doesn't work either: the program tells me there is no board available. I have already separated the board into two, the successful bootloader flash with LPCxpress was when the board was still in one piece. Since I cut it in two the first thing I tried uploading was the text "hex" file with MIOS studio, which didn't work, and since then I haven't been successful in uploading/flashing anything on the board. However, the led flash and MIOS studio would seem to suggest that the bootloader is up and running.
You need to upload the application via either MIDI or the USB port on the MB_CORE_LPC17 board, so not via the usb on the LPCEXPRESSO board.

If you go to the external menu, you can control up to 8 external CV:
The witches are optional and not implemented.
As you have only 2 CV Inputs, this should be more then enough.

I'm thinking about adding a Steiner VCF to my stereo MB SID (this one) and I've been reading and searching but I don't really understand how to do it.
So I gather I'll need an AOUT_lc module. But I have no idea how to go about connecting up the filter or how it's controlled. I'm building an all-in-one keyboard/synth so I'd like to have the filter inside the casing. Would I need to add separate controls for it, or could the filter/resonance/mode be controlled via the MB SID control surface?
Also, I'm using the Optimized C64 PSU. I guess I'll need a new PSU.
Any help with this would be very much appreciated.
A AOUT_NG would be the way to go. The LC will work too, but is more expensive. As for controls, please read the CV part of the MBSID V2 manual.

To further nitpick :wink:, that Sammich uses the TA12 series. These are 5,70mm width, the TAC series which are used in the Shruthi are 5,5mm

Laen's PCBs are really excellent, I recommend them whenever I can, so I do it here as well!
For prototyping i use the toner transfer method. However if that is successful i def. want to try Laen's service. Those pcb look really good.

Looks good. I did some similar pcb making with photopaper. But lately the results are less then optimal. Maybe i give this vinyl foil a go. Now where do i find Oracal 641 in W-Europe....

Jsynthlib is rather old and pretty much depricated. Have a look at: CTRLR. There is a Matrix 1000 and a TX81z controller. The other ones you can look for on their forum or perhaps make it yourself.

Nice to see pics :). the sid is soldered to the mainboard? That was never the case with my C64s...
Apperantly the early ones were. I think it would probably take a Dremel to the mainboard first. Then use a solderiron.

This blog entry is all over the place. First it almost seems like the Midibox Synth fault he is more into building then composing. Then he goes on about building stuff for other people and restriction on sales. Then there is a tantrum about documentation.
And i am not really sure what the point is of this blog. But it seems to me the blogger actually likes building stuff, thinks he is good at it and would really want to make a business of it.

Probably so :) I'm actually looking at the ON MC34161 family of chips Technobreath mentioned in his crowbar circuit design gallery (linked up above) to see if I can use that to help with a crowbar. Pretty neat in that it can alert to over and under voltage, but I haven't quite figured out how to use them yet (and I don't know how to power it ;P regulated or otherwise).
Not sure tbh. The MC3423 datasheet is quite clear. However reading the MC34161 datasheet i am not so sure it will or can do the same.

Ah that makes sense. Though 300W is a lot. I think for my design it would be closer to 50-100 max, although that's still quite high for such a small device, noted. Still, for what it does provide, it's pretty easy to just drop one in where it is.
Having both does make for an interesting situation though since now I have to make sure one triggers in certain cases over the other. *scratches head*

I agree the example is a bit over the top in comparison to our usual designs. But a 5V TVS looks like a pretty small device, with no heatsinking. So even 20W will be to much to handle. It will probably result in a big burn on the pcb :wink:
Tbh i think a TVS is only usefull in special enviroments. Like environments which have instable power. Or with mobile devices, which are not grounded. Which can be more vulnerable to ESD.
For a net powered MB6582 psu, i think a crowbar will be sufficient.

Ok, i have been reading up a little bit on a TVS. Conclusion a TVS is not a replacement for a crowbar.
a TVS is meant as protection for spikes. So for instance an ESD. It can withstand a peak current for a very short time (max 1ms) after that period the amount of current it can withstand dramatically decreases as it heats up. And eventually will be destroyed. A TVS will only clamp at the rated voltage and never become a short like a crowbar.
A good example i found about the differences between the two: If you have a 15V supply and a 20A current. The TVS will basically have to dispensate 300W in a problem situation. Whereas a SCR will drop the current to 1A and has only 20W to dispensate. You will need a mighty heatsink to dispensate 300Wattz :wink:
In one of the datasheets i found that one of the applications of a TVS can be to protect a SCR from (false) triggering. So i guess it is not about one or the other. But they basically complement each other.

Me findz it very hard to believe, that there aren´t any modern linear vregs with built-in output protection?!?
Have got the zener triggered crowbar in my mb6582 psu, too, but as you say, the trigger voltage may be already a bit high... which logic voltage is considered fatal for SIDs?

You used a 5.6V Zener for +5V circuit? That has a 5% precision. So max. Voltage passing through is 5.88V. Datasheet SID6582 says VDD=9V+5%VDC and VCC=5V+5%VDC.

I bought some MC3423 at reichelt. However that IC is EOL. I seem to remember someone found an up to date solution from ONsemi.It was technobreath as i suspected

First of all i am not an expert. I hadn't heard of TVS before. But a TVS looks like to be protection from only a short spike.
I did do a bit of research on crowbar designs. You can make a simple crowbar with a zener and a scr. The downside of a zener is they only come in specific voltages (same as TVS as it seems) which makes it a bit inflexible. So there are are more intricate design which utilize an IC instead of a zener. Onsemi makes a couple of good ones.
But in the end it all comes down to how much it costs to replace what is behind the PSU. Is it worth the additional cost of the protection. The main reason i started to look into a crowbar is that 8 x SID is a lot of money. I don't want to blow it up with a 20 year old C64 psu.

What's odd is I just finished the 9090 and used a 2x15v tx for it, and don't seem to have any problems w/ it regulating 15vdc. But, it's a different transformer, so irrelevant, I guess.
My only concern w/ a 15v tx for the 6582 is, I'm also using a 9v regulator, and that's a pretty big drop for it.
Is there a down-side to using LM2940's instead of the LM79* regulators? I'm thinking there must be a reason the LM7* series is still the standard.
Using 15VAC to make 15VDC is fine (15V * 1.4 - 1.4 = 19,6V Rectified) that's about 1,6V of head room.
