  1. I assume if they were required, they would be included in kits and the build instructions, but how heavily are they recommended? The 7809 regulators on my MB-6582s are so hot that I can't keep my finger on them for more than a second or two.
  2. I've seen first hand four times that a flat, grey case can contain a 6581. There are also F keys that have BOTH printed on top of the key. F1 in the lower left corner, F2 in the top right corner. There doesn't seem to be a correlation between this printing and the type of SID.
  3. I've come across three newer-style C64 computers with 6581 chips inside. Frustrating! Does it work the other way? Is there a chance that a breadbox C64 will contain an 8580 chip?
  4. I uh...understood about 50% of that post, but I'm probably interested in two pactec cases if you end up selling them. I'm not worried about minor cosmetic imperfections on the panels or cases or screws.
  5. I love it! How do you plan to keep the modules from sliding around in the case?
  6. Cool thanks! Sooo, someone want to give me the length and width of the entire panel? If the machine's software changes the .dxf, it'll do it by a scale, right?
  7. Where can I get the exact specs for a MB-6582 frontpanel? My friend is into metal work, and we might take a shot at making one ourselves. I found the link to the .fpd, but I have a Mac, so I can't install Frontpanel Designer.
  8. Are these still available? Can you ship to the USA?
  9. This editor is AWESOME! Soooo nice to have something to hold me until I build a control surface!
  10. I came back to this while waiting for more MB-6582 parts in the mail. I re-soldered a few things on each board, then re-made each wire connector between CORE and SIDs. The CORE died! Then I resoldered some stuff on the CORE and now everything works! ...and I still don't know how to use the SID interconnection test.
  11. Wilba, the attachments seem to be gone. I'd hate for mine to be the exceptions, though! I also plan on doing some 6581 projects once I use all the 8580s on MB-6582s.
  12. Wow....that actually made perfect sense...Electronics lvl up! Thanks!
  13. Oh nice, I didn't know that existed. Thanks!
  14. What are some tried and true methods? So far I've read about 99% isopropyl alcohol, and my dad suggested TV tuner cleaner
  15. Does anyone know where the pictures of the installed heatsinks went? I'm thinking about getting some. I've never used a heatsink before. Is thermal paste required? Is it possible to wipe it off the SID later if I want to? Is there a certain type that I need to use?
  16. Nevermind, I got it  A quick test showed me that, yes, J70 is all wired up and outputs sound without any extra soldering.
  17. No idea. I'm just now ordering parts for the control surface.
  18. So...does anyone know the specs? I need to order some LEDs, and all the ones on ebay seem to be SUEPR BRIGHT OMG. What mcd rating should I look for?
  19. So did you have to solder anything, or is J7 0 ready to go? I was just reading up on this very topic.
  20. I don't have another, unfortunately. uh...how do I measure current? the multimeter manual doesn't really help. I just tried to do it at J25 and the bridge rectifier almost exploded. The top is a bit melted, but everything still works. I should replace it anyway, right?
  21. The baseboard is finished! Without SID chips, the testtone checks perfectly on all channels! When I stuff 8 SIDs, the thing won't power up. No LCD, no tone, and a very dim power LED. Remove one SID, and it stays like that for a second or two, then comes on to full power (sometimes...sometimes it's the same as having 8 SIDs). Remove another SID (6 SIDS total are stuffed) and it works just fine. All SID chips are fine, I've tested each in my CORE + 2 SIDs setup. It doesn't matter which SID modules I remove the chips from. Removing the two in SID4 gives the same results as removing two from SID 1, and the same result as removing one chip from SID 2 and one from SID 3. Straight out of the wall, my C64 PSU plug puts out 5.2VDC and 10.7VAC. All of the voltage checks given in the baseboard construction guide checked out fine.
  22. hahahahaha....RTFM! I didn't do this: Now it works!
  23. hahaha....thanks for helping me! I was up 'till 4 AM last night troubleshooting my MIDI connections, because I didn't read that little paragraph about bridging J11. Are you sure all COREs should be bridged at the same time? It's not entirely clear wether you have to upload things to each PIC, by switching the jumper and uploading everything four times, or if whatever is sent to PIC 0000 is sent to all the slaves. (EDIT: obviously, not everything is uploaded simultaneously. My CORE1 has testtone uploaded, and the others show "Ready.") In MIOS, check your MIDIMonitor IN window. When you power up the MB-6582, does one line of text show up?
  24. My MB-6582 won't communicate with my computer, so I'm going through the MIDI troubleshooting steps. I could've sworn I successfully sent a message to the LCD before, but now I'm not sure. (I have another CORE for testing so it gets confusing). TEST PROG1: Pass. I got the chips from SmashTV, and tried it in my other CORE. TEST CORE1: Pass TEST CORE2: N/A TEST CORE3: Pass, as far as I can tell. TEST CORE4: Pass. TEST CORE5: Pass, mostly. http://www.ucapps.de/howtodebug/mbhp_core_extract_measuring_gnd.gif I don't know how to test J3 or the ground that comes from the crystal an 33 pf cap TEST CORE6: I have no idea how to do this TEST CORE7: This diode measures .6 V and a beep, or 1.3 V and no beep, depending on how I orient my multimeter probes. I got the diode from SmashTV an installed the diode facing the correct direction. Pass? TEST CORE8: Pass. TEST CORE9: Pass. TEST CORE10: N/A TEST CORE11: (Will try later...I did bump those 2200uf caps more than I should have) TEST OUT1: FAIL! What do I do to fix it? I tried with the power on and off, and with three different LEDs (each from SmashTV). The LEDs work, I tested them at J3. I used the LCD message app with "loop message" checked. TEST OUT2: (Will try later) Also just noticed the whole TESTIN section...I'll try that later, too.
  25. Woops... like I said, I tried to upload testtone again by unchecking "Wait for upload request." Now when I power up, it shows the copyright screen for a moment, then turns into gibberish and stays that way.
