Good First Project?

I'm thinking about building myself a MIDIbox  to control ableton

Right now i'm looking at this

8x  Track Level Faders

8x  Track Pan Pots/encoders

1x  Crossfader

8x  Arm Recording buttons

8x  Track actuator buttons

32x Encoders to control effects

1x Master Fader

Now i'm a complete n00b as far as this is concerned. I'm learning how to read schematics, and I'm great with solder, but I've never done this kind of work before. Most of what i've done has been on guitar electronics, and from time to time making audio cables. Would this be a good thing for me to do, or should I just buy something pre-made and settle for that setup?

Welcome!

You are probably over qualified to undertake this project compared to others who have never picked up a soldering iron and completing a SID synth.

Just read read read read read, and then read some more.. not just in one day, but over the next week until you have DIN's and DOUT's and AIN's and Cores coming out of you arse.

For you, it could be that the biggest hurdle might be the physical construction (Enclosure), unless you are good with that stuff as well.

Kind Regards

Mike

+1 what mike said. You'll rock it in. Because this is a custom project, you will need to do a little C programming though... Really it's not too hard, and is a great way to learn the language without too much of the complexities (which MIOS takes care of for you). Have a look at the examples on ucapps.de for some hints about how to make pots and encoders send messages, etc. You might also be interested in ultra's work on the LiveAPI too.
