Hi all, It's been a long time since I've been in these parts. I've been using some cheaper encoders that i purchased off ebay, and after a year or two they have started failing. Essentially, sometimes when turning clockwise, the value will drop... My question is - what encoders have people used? More importantly - What encoders have people used that after a few years of regular and abusive use have continued to function perfectly. My SEQ4 is very dear to my heart, and I love it to bits and I'd love it to continue to work perfectly for many more years. Regards Mike

So, did you put it in step mode? ie, take it out of song mode. (It's song & patterns will be full of garbage with no batteries installed, or if they are flat / been missing etc) The amount of times i've bought 707's & 727's that people said were not working, but it was just in the wrong mode? about 4 times.

Oh, and comes with 2 NOS SID's.

Hey all. I'm selling my Sammich as I've got a big arsed 6582 with keyboard.. so while the Sammich is cute, it's no match for it's big daddy... And I've got some serious SP-1200 GAS. It's 100% complete and works perfectly. You are thinking about it too hard.. lol.. First, you need to know what the frequency of the noise is, otherwise your shooting in the dark... It does looks like the MeanWell ones are switching at 132Khz. Like I mentioned before, the switching noise is above the audio spectrum (+20Khz) in modern SM powersupplies.. so, if it's there, you won't be able to hear it.. I'd doubt if your speakers or amplifier could reproduce it, and I doubt your recording interface will record it either. Enjoy the filthyness of the SID.. that kind of audiophile thinking and SID chips don't really belong in the same sentence.. lol. Cheers Mike

Exactly what I did.

Regarding the 9vDC.. yea, I suppose you could use the 12v and regulate it down.. You probably don't need any other components apart from a regulator. I had height & room constraints for the inside of my 6582 synth, so the SM PS was a nice tidy solution. It also runs very very cool, which was important, considering the SID's get warm enough on their own. Cheers Mike

Well, they are easily the noisiest bit of kit I own... yep, not offensive.. a nice soothing 8 bit noise, but you sure can hear it when it's switched on and nothing else is playing. Also, regarding the price, when I check the mouser link it shows me $62.. not $46, unless you get different price breaks in the US etc. I find Mouser is rather expensive her in Australia, sure, convenient and a vast catalogue, but expensive. regards Mike

Modern SM power supplies also have a much higher switching frequency than in the past.. waaaay above the audio spectrum.. Plenty of people are using em for racking up vintage channel strips from old consoles etc, including some serious racking specialists that I know. I figured, that if it's it good enough for them, it'll be good enough for a noisy as F@#k SID synth. Cheers Mike

Modern SM power supplies switch at way higher frequencies than the older type.. Regards Mike

Sorry to burst your bubble about VFD's.. but with the bunch of VFD's I got, I had to go through them all to find matched pairs. Some were brighter than others. I had the same issue with a few of my SEQ's regarding LCD's (Not all matching). It is fustrating, but as mine were just boring green ebay cheapies, I just bought another & hoped it would match. For the $20 I spent on another screen it offset the arsing around trying to electrically match the ones I already had. Time = money type thing. Best of luck Mike

Wow! Had a decent play and the real time record is awesome! 10000x better than V3. I adjusted the quantisation value up from 20% to about 60% and that seemed better suited to me. The ability to turn off the MIDI forward is great! My old synths thank you very much.

Yep.. pics will come soon. As for power.. I took the 5v regulator off the board and connected it to a massive (10cm x 4cm x 4cm) heat sink. I was pleasently surprised how cool it runs now.. even after a few hours on, the heatsink feels only slightly warm. I work as a AV tech, so gels are easy to come by. They are basically thick heat resistant coloured plastic in many colours. but to be honest, the green glow of these vfd's fit nicely with the green buttons i used and the green backlighting on the laser cut text. Hey TK, I finally finished my V4 sequencer the other day, and it's a huge improvement! the poly recording is great! I like the probability layer!! cheers for that! I had a huge play with it last night and have a few questions & suggestions. - As many of my synths have pretty early midi, they don't have the ability to turn off local on etc. As a result, when recording in a riff realtime, the note gets played twice while recording it in (Once from the keyboard & once from the seq). This is ok for some synths, but makes it awkward for others (Voice stealing). Could there be a function in the record page to turn off the new notes being played as they are recorded? - The real time record is a huge improvement over the V3, but I still feel that it's not as good as it could be. If I'm playing a riff in, my natural tendancey is to play it slightly early. So, if I was aiming to play a note on step 2, I may infact play it just before the end of step 1. As a result it feels as if the note is getting sometimes recorded on an earlier step. I can try and play a little bit sloppier and later, but this is pretty counter-intuative. Maybe if there was a paramenter that moved the sensitivity from 0 - 12 ticks (1/32nd). ie, if set to 12 tick (using 96 ticks per quarter) this would let you play up to a 12 ticks before the end of step 1 and the note would still be recorded into step 2 .
