hughbie
Hi there, as stated before I am a complete noob to not just midibox but electronics in general, so be gentle! So I have just finished building my sammichSID including voltage checks, and have gotten as far as the firmware upload and when I hit "Query" in MIOS I get a "No Response" message. I have tried all steps in: http://www.ucapps.de/howto_debug_midi.html and cannot get the loopback to work. I also tried doing the loop back from JMO and JMI and still nothing. I do get a download request when I power on the unit and a "Ready" message on the screen. I have posted pics from every angle I could see being relevant, in case some-one notices a bad solder joint. Any and all ideas are welcome. Cheers.
Hawkeye
Hello and welcome! Thanks for adding good quality pics with good lighting! I am sure your issue will be solved, my first guess would be to check, that your MIDI interface is not on the MIDI device blacklist (-> wiki). When I first built my MB6582, I ran into a similar issue, and it was because of an AKAI MIDi device that misbehaved... and which did not allow me to query the device or upload anything, i switched it and everything worked at once... Edit: Another thing - should it not be a 6N138 optocoupler in the IC socket in the middle of picture one, close to the midi ports and not a 24LC512 bankstick IC? Me iz not a Sammich owner, but that is very likely to be your problem with MIDI communications. hughbie
Thanks for the reply, I made sure to get a whitelist fella...it's why it has taken so long to build! Had gone through a couple of different interfaces before I even realised there was a whitelist! Ill check that IC now and if that's the problem then I am in fact an idiot! will keep posted! hughbie
PS is there a chance I've wrecked the other chip by putting it in there?
Hawkeye
You are most welcome - enjoy your fantastic new synth! I don´t think you´ve burned it, just compared the datasheets - both have vcc on pin 8, which is a good sign, so I´d give it a try, but no guarantees - you can also test/use your sammich without this bankstick ic and order another one cheap when shopping for electronics next time... you will just have a little bit less patch storage. nILS
Switching the opto coupler and an eeprom will result in neither the bankstick nor the MIDI working, it shouldn't hurt either one of the ICs.
hughbie
Hey, thanks to all who replied. She is now alive and currently being painted! I have learned my most valuable lesson - Use your eyes when inserting chips! Also thanks in general to nILS and WIlba for creating such an easy to build SID machine and excellent build guide.
