SexyBeast Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hi,the Midibox Wiki suggests using encoders from voti, though they are detended. I always thought that only non-detended encoders should be used for best performance. What's the truth?regards, tom Quote
machinate Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 I read Non-detented somewhere - somehow that should give a higher resolution? Quote
raphael Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hi,I always thought that only non-detended encoders should be used for best performance. What's the truth? This has nothing to do with performance, but with non-detented encoders you can use the "double resolution" feature (read this thread: http://www.midibox.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=parts_q;action=display;num=1048692275;start=4#4) I think that's what you've read.In general: NON-detented encoders are godd for 'smooth' operation of synth controls (like on the MB-SID or on the MB16E...).Detented encoders are good for application where you need a clear response for every change of a value (like with the MB-SEQ). Every 'click' is a increment/decrement.So it only depends on your preferences if you use detented or non-dtented encs)I always use detented encoders... even for soft-synth control. Quote
raphael Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Just to clarify this "higher resolution" myth:There is no higher MIDI resolution with non-detented encs! The higher resolution only means that you get more increments/decrements per angle of rotation. So if xou got 24step encs you will get:-24 increments/decrements with the detented type-48 increments/decrements with the non-detented typeSo you have to turn the detented enc twice to get the same value as with the non-detented one. (Or you use the FAST Option in MIOS ;D. That's what I prefer instead of turning and turning and turn...)I think the diagram of Thorsten int he mentioned thred makes the encoder modes quite clear.raphael Quote
illogik Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 and if you want you can still buy from voti; you can make the encoders non detented. I discribed how i did it here:http://www.midibox.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=parts_q;action=display;num=1092049636;start=3#3cheers,marcel Quote
SexyBeast Posted October 6, 2004 Author Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hi,thank you very much for your replies.By 'performance' I meant 'performance of the encoders', not the core or something else. I had something in mind about 'resolution' but it wasn't quite clear.I know that different encoders can not alter "MIDI resolution" in any way. (Why should anyone believe that?)In any case I will order encoders from voti now, the price is unbeatable... ;-)regards, tom Quote
raphael Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hey Tom,I know that different encoders can not alter "MIDI resolution" in any way. (Why should anyone believe that?) I didn't want to offend you!If you hang around for a while in this forum, you will hear some quite funny questions about MIDI and electronics... ;DSo I thougt it would be better to clarify the term 'resolution' concerning encoders.Raphael Quote
SexyBeast Posted October 7, 2004 Author Report Posted October 7, 2004 Hi Raphael, sorry, I didn't want to offend you either and I'm sorry if I gave you the impression of feeling offended.I know that many strange questions are asked in this forum and in fact I do very much appreciate you giving a detailed answer though you might think it's a funny question. This is one of the best characteristics of this forum; people are very friendly here. I've seen a lot of places where people try to impress each other by their smattering and where they're defending their opinions in a rude tone.bye and regards, tom Quote
