DX27 Programmer?

Jaicen

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there's anyone on here who owns a DX27 and can help design a programmer for it. I'm thinking of something like a cross betwee the JSynthLib program and the PG200.

Basically, it would have encoders for ADSR, detune, level etc.. It would also have buttons and LED's to select Algorithms/operators etc, with an LCD to show the values of the current parameters.

I've just come up with this idea while i've been organising patches for my own DX27 this morning, so there may be an obvious reason i'm missing as to why it's not been done yet.

Is anyone interested in such a project?

Hi Jaicen,

you might want to wait a month or so, there is something in the pipeline that could serve your needs (and those of other late 80's / early 90's synth owners as well).

It is a box that will be able to edit any synth controllable by SysEx or CC or RPN/NRPN messages. As things look now, it will come with ready-to-use editor setups for Oberheim Matrix-1000 and Emu Ultra-Proteus. Also, there will be a little JAVA app that allows you to specify the control sequences necessary for your own synth.

Hot damn! Thats definitely something that I would want to build! Would it help for me to scan in the SysEX implementation from my DX27/100 manual? When you say Java app, is it compatible with JSynthLib? I currently use that a lot, which is pretty much what I want but in a hardware form.

I don't suppose you could send me any more details could you??

Hi Jaicen,

it would help if you created the setup for the DX27 in the JAVA app directly. This would make the box even more attractive to others  :). I will let you know when the documentation is available. Btw, I once had a DX27, too, for some years :D.

I will not say much more about this project now because it is a University project of which I happen to be the supervisor. So let us finish this internally first, and then it will get published in the WIKI.

Just to give you a time scope: the internal presentation will take place on the 13th of October.

Hi:

That's great. Really.

Actually I'm building a MIDIbox with 32 pots and 16 (maybe 20) buttons,

and was planing to customize the firmware to control my Matrix-1000

and my Juno-1. But I want it to send CCs to other synths (MIDIbox SID,

etc.) also.

Can you be a little more specific about the hardware needed. Mostly

because I'm in the begining of the project and if I need to do some

changes (hardware) I want to do it now.

Thank you.

Okay,

it looks like we are actually approaching the release of the beast - Christian/Gertius has spilled some information in  this thread...

Oh yes, DX11 - one of those machines that make for a real classic. It's one of the sexiest Yamaha synths ever, design-wise at least, that might be the reason why it's so sought after. Here in Germany they sell for incredible sums. Sold mine many years ago, it was a big step from the DX27 to the DX11 though  ;D

Damn I'll have to order more cores now! ;) Not for a DX synth, but I'll program one of these for all my other gear. Unless someone has a cheap TX816 or FS1R ;) The K5000 will be first cab off the rank in case anyone else owns one?

ilmenator and gertius this is a great project, thanks guys :)

Thanks stryd,

I think it would be great if people could contribute to this project, because its success will definitely depend on the number of synths that it supports readily.

Yet I feel that synths like the K5k are not in the exact focus of the MIDI Box GLCD. It is more aimed at those late 80's / early 90's rack syths lacking knobs and display. The best example for this type of synth is the Oberheim Matrix-1000 - standalone you cannot even edit the sounds...

Also those other machines with 2x16 or 2x20 Displays, four buttons and rotary encoders are really hard to program; almost the whole EMU synth range comes to my mind, WS SR, Kawai K1 - K4, Kawai XD-5, Yamaha TG500, you name them. Most of these are really excellent sounding gear (K1/K4 apart, maybe...), they are just sooo hard to use.

Those synths with graphical display will not gain significantly in user friendlyness (K5000S here  ;D), because the MIDI Box GLCD does not provide a GUI. It is almost text only, but parameters can be grouped according to your personal needs.

I was thinking of an ADD section/formant filter editor ;) I hate that scrolling around to draw the shapes thing...

But yeh...

Funny you mentioned the WS, I've got an AD model that was next cab off the rank. It's got the joystick and a GLCD but is sadly knobless. I'll do that, then the XD5 and then the RM50 and rackattack, as those last three should be a good start for the K4®, TG500/RY30 and microQ etc :)

This is going to become one of those gear slut threads  ;D

WS AD here - I love that one. It's almost the perfect synth. Wave Sequences will be hard to edit on a vertical display, though... Maybe it's a good idea to think of MIDI Box GLCD as an add-on controller, so it is only used for those parameters which need immediate control, while those that need graphical representation or are easy to access from the unit itself do not have to be implemented in MIDI Box GLCD. Just a thought  ;).

XD-5 also here - one of the units supposed to be great, but I never really got around tweaking it enough. Maybe with a good controller...?  :D

OK that one goes first then. It's my 2nd fave drum synth after the rackattack. If the elektron gear didn't cost so much it might be third, but yeh, it seriously rocks. Awesome snares.
