ultra Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 i am debating how to make the text on my sequencer panel. my dad is getting me a piece of 1/8" aluminum from his work. my girlfriend is cutting it on an abrasive waterjet machine at school. she also has access to a laser cnc machine that will etch. i found a company who will put black powdercoat on my panel for a cheap price. now, if i etch after it's been powdercoated, will it show burn marks or leave me with nice, clean text that is the color of the original panel? this would be my #1 choice because it would look so neat. i think i'd have to have it powdercoated first because otherwise it would paint into the etching. but i'm afraid of damaging the powdercoat. does anybody have experience with this and can offer some information? thanks!ultra Quote
DavidBanner Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 the biggest problem with lasers and aluminium is laser flashbacks, which can kill the lens... Most ppl won't touch it with a laser and the 1 place I did get to do it not only got massive flashbacks but also completely f***ed the panel tooMake sure your GF asks for some advice before she starts hitting ali with a laser - I'd hate to hear about an industrial accident or her getting into trouble for killing a lens. stryd_one Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 As to whether the powdercoat will burn under the laser, it will depend on the methods and materials used... Most often it's all good, but YMMV... Quote
Echopraxia Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 I was thinking the same thing about laser etching my key caps and the front panel. Do you think if paint the keycaps then add glossy clear coat then get them laser etched would be ok? Does anybody know where I can get laser etching done in small quantities? Quote
