  1. Dear members,

Well it must have occured to you that i am trying to make a transition from the old forum to the new software.

    So what happend this time?

The last thing i needed to fix were the redirects of the ld forum to the new one. A very nice redirect script was made by the guys from invision. However this did not work if the new forum was put under it's old directory forum.

So i had to change it back. This happened tuesday.

On the admin page i was told to remove the conversion folder. However i uninstalled the application.

    Fault no.1

The redirect script uses tables in the database that had a nice redirect indexing bla bla data in it.

I did not knew that until i looked at the error logs when trying a redirect.

So i had to restore those tables. Luckily i had a backup. (midibox is backupped every saturday 3gb uncompressed)

I placed the database backup to the midiboxwebsite.

    Fault no.2

Instead of backing up the database before my change i dumped the backup from saturday to the forum.

Now i made the forum loose 5 days of data.

I feel absolutly terrible about this. I cannot fix this and it is not fixable.

I am ready for the consequences as i take full responsibility.

    My apoligies,

    Jeffry

  2. Everyone who donated THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!.....

We reached the goal (+plus a little extra).

Ofcourse you're free to donate still but you can donate to Wilba, TK or anyone else you respect or you can still donate to me  :P . Everything will be spend to your benefits not ours.

I fully respect the willingness to chip in a dime (or much more) to help people out even if some can't spend much.

Anyway much work for me now so i hope i can present you sometihing new soon!

  3. btw, with vBulletin it can go the same way you know..

A friend of mine owns a big music portal/forum (almost 10000 members).. One day he decided to embed vB into Drupal cms for content creation.. A lot of work, and now it's done, he's stuck there and support for the VB-Drupal combination is fading away. No way back it seems.

What forum is that if i may ask?

  4. smf uses mysql too so i don't see the big deal actually as we are not having 4000 concurrent connections per second over here.

I understand that other db's are better but i host a few other mebers as well over here and it is better to keep just 1 engine on the server instead of multiple ones.

invision has a few members running innodb but the devs do not reccomend it yet.

  5. what is wrong with SMF?

It's community and support. We use some plugins made by the smf community that are not supported anymore or not updated in time to leave open holes in the software that scammers might use.

    I just donated :)

vBulletin boards on the other hand, I don't like them very much.

Anyway, if there's urgent technical reasons to switch to vB, I guess I'll have to grow accustomed to it :)

I am looking at invision, vbulletin is getting more on the background for me so i think it is gonna be out of the question.

    Thanks for your donation!!

Can I ask why you think vBulletin is better than SMF? I've seen both from the back-end and neither are amazing, but, as I work for a rather large server hosting company as MySQL DBA, you can imagine I see all sorts of things. I never see SMF issues. I often see vBulletin issues.

I have found their support to be downright shit according to customers I have talked to. Simple things like converting tables to InnoDB to avoid locking are things that vBulletin seems to know jack about. Now this is just from second-hand experience really but I see it a lot and it pains me every-time I do.

I'm just saying - SMF is free and open source. vBulletin isn't and I hold vBulletin to higher standards, and for as much as it costs, it should be significantly better than any open source forum out there.

As far as the donations, I would be happy to donate! I'm sure you at least have to pay for server costs which, with as large as the MidiBox community is, might be starting to get non-trivial. But I do ask that you seriously evaluate both SMF and vBulletin before you make your decision.

It could be that my experience has been quite skewed and vBulletin is vastly superior but just be sure to do your research. I also hope you have exhausted other avenues, including looking at optimizing and tuning your database. If you need help with that, be all means, send me a PM since that's what I do all day :)

I have worked with vbulletin from version 1.3 and in my opinion it is not shit and when emailing for support i usually got an awnser back within 15 minutes.

Because smf is free and opensource addon and other stuff depends on the community that is behind it. This can be slow painfull or buggy to implement. And still for me vbulletin is better then open source as i experienced. Most people forget that there are maybe 10 smf users where there are 100 vbulletin users. So yes you see more complaints and more attacks on that piece of software.

And i did research however vbulletin is messing with the licensing so invision is now the first in line. Very good community as far as i can tell good support also on the forums. Cheap and lot's of functionality i seek for the midibox forums.

  6. Dear members,

For several years i have been hosting midibox.org with pleasure and wil continue to do so.

However this forum and it's members have grown in a positive way.

Unfortunatly i am struggling with the forum software and compatibility with addon's.

I believe that professional people deserve a professional lokking and functioning community.

Midibox needs to be beter organised where everyting should be integrated in it's most viewed page: The forum.

Long have i waited for vbulletin v4 to come and bring it over here, but they are trying to screw us license holders big time. I allready own a silent licence but i still have to pay $250 (wich wil be way more if i buy it after 30okt). And it does not end while it is 250 until V5 comes out i have to pay that ammount again.

So i have been looking for something else and my intrest has come to Invision Power Board.

(most vbulletin users are going there now ;))

However for a full suite i need $250. (after that it's $25 / half year whenever we need support or an upgrade) :( bummer as i do not have this money right now. I allready pay approx $680 a year for hosting midibox alone.

So please donate a few bucks and get me started on making the transfer to new software.

We can discuss ages about this but i really do preffer payed forum software over opensource stuff. It is very contradicting with what we do, but i feel it's best for us as it offers much more without alot of issues i have right now at update moments/ spamming etc etc.

    Thanks for your help,

    Jeffry

  7. That's cool. It's nice to have a target audience.

Anyway, as for my mix, I got shutdown for noise complaints after three tracks. The organisers of the evening schedule didn't realise that the restaurant was only zoned for noise production till 10:30. Oh well. Hope your mix went a lot better than mine.

Ah too bad about the noise complaints. The set they hired for us was a bit too much.

    (Or i am getting old)

Anyway you did ok i guess and must have given you a good feeling to perform after such a long time.

We did quite ok. No complaints about the set everyone loved it. It was recorded.

Will post it when it becomes available.

  8. I had a bad moment this evening though. I was mixing Nations by Edge (Edge #14). I had it sitting in the mix, but it was a little fast. I was nudging it back a little, about every two bars or so. I went to trim the speed a tad, feeling all in the groove, and in control ... then I bumped the stylus as I brought my hand back from the pitch slide. Ahhhh  :-[ I scratched Nations! The first quarter of the record is fubar. I loved that track. It's quite pumping, a little funky, a little old school, with classic house/rave tie ins. Errrhhh. Deflated.

    Hahaha common n00b mistake ;)

    http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=101648&ev=rb

Plenty for sale i see. ;)

Anyway, I think I can play well enough for a couple of hours. That's probably enough. I'm not sure how much techno, old school hard trance, and banging acid my friend's will be willing to swallow anyway. As far as I know, there are only two people at the reception who have even heard these tunes before. There are quite a few churchy choir folk, some R&B drones, and love song saps (note my unbridled prejudice; it wasn't an accident  :P).

As long as they are not come up to request songs.... (wich i really hate) you'll be good ;)

I have the luck that i have a reuinion and everyone likes the music from back then.

most of the people that will visit were also in this place :

I am in that movie too but not in the youtube version ;)

    The vid is from 1994

Any way good luck Saturday ;0

  9. Still had a lot of trouble with some tracks, and I really don't know my records well at all any more. That makes things a little difficult.

. I was looking for a recording medium at that point, but didn't have anything handy.

I had the same issue. Forgot how some tracks run in total.

Ah you don't have to record it as long as your audiance will have a blast.

I am lucky (or unlucky) to begin at the start of the party.

  10. what is the name of the song that comes in at 5:30?  I love that song so much!  I have been trying to track it down but I don't know the name and I don't bother trying to sing it for people :P.  I used to hear it every week at raves back in the day.

That is Edge of Motion - Setup 707

Listening to the mix now. What a nostalgia trip. Sweet.

Some of the transitions grind a bit, and others are rather smooth. I like the tunes. I think it's not such a bad thing to leave these tunes in the mix for a short time, these days, as it feels a bit more in step with recent tech this way. I think for some tracks though, it can detract a little from the effect if the track doesn't play out.

I think I'll put this mix in my car, if you don't mind.

    Cheers

I don't mind but when i can get my pc running again @ home (it crashed hard this time) i will record a new one that will be better.

I will take in your advice some tunes should play longer indeed for a better effect.

DUDE! I've got a gig on Oct 10, and I really suck!

I haven't mixed records for 10 years. My records are old too. Also, I haven't had a chance to practice yet. Probably tomorrow, though. You've inspired me.

I'm doing sound production for a friend's wedding, and having a mix (hopefully with actual mixing involved) at the end.

Kind of feels funny to see read the title of your thread.

You better practise then because i was really weird to stand behind the turntables after such a long time.

If you have a change to record it please do!! You made me curious.

Sorry what i meant by "intro's",

was a track that was mixable, i.e that had a good 2 mins of boom tish boom tish, dj frendly tracks in other words!

I should of been wayyyyyy more specific.

Ah those old tracks are not exactly DJ friendly maybe thats why i like music from then better then music from now. It brings variation if you are a sucky dj like me ;)

    Im loving it, playlist please!

    Nasrudin

Will do this when my pc is up and running @ home. (currently behind my pc at work)

  11. LOL i never knew this Charlie toons. Nice to see where it came from. Prodigy used a lot of samples my Girl is into reggea and espesially the old stuff ska/riddim and alot of english productions use samples from those old records.

Smithy we only got 1,5 hours and i am the only one with an odd record collection with unknown tunes. because of that they specificaly asked for me. Most tunes don't have breaks or intro's. It's techno. But you are right i should play some tunes a bit longer and let the blending in get better.

  12. Well i have not hit the decks for approx 8 years.

I am practising my ass off but it was even more diffcult to choose the records for my mix.

So would you be so kind to listen to my mix and tell me if i made the right decissions? Do they blend ok or don't they match.

You can critisise my mixing skill but i allready know i suck ;) Trying to make the mixes better this was just practise.

Feedback appreciated (on the choice of records that is)

    Jeffry

p.s. if you do not like house music from 1990 - 1993 then don't listen.

  13. same here. there's no choice like in your picture. i also was not able to change my name in january.

This is correct. One upon a time there was this dipshit who uploaded an avatar with a very special name to code inject stuff to the forum.

So unless you are in a diffrent group then normal user you cannot upload pictures.

And changing your name january why???
