that was written some time ago in rant mode ...ill have to read it again to put in context what you just said ...running out of time this evening ..as i have to drop in and see some friends ...back later tonight to take stock of what you just said.. On that slightly off topic matter, i currently use a ressurrected Leak Stereo 20 valve amp for front channel & home build for rear (in a 4.1 surround config), 4 external dacs attached to an on SBLive soundcard running asio & doing surround matrix decoding. The top speakers for front and back are modifyed 70's Leak 2030 & 600's with the aluminum cone sandwiches & new crossovers without the horrible electrlytics in em'.. the sandwich tech ended up in alot of studio monitors over the years ...sounds pretty crisp ;) Oh and the 4x 18" (fane 18xbs) in push pull config are serving as subs when not used for pa ...but that might just be boasting ;) all in all it does the job nicely for now.. Sorry for carrying on the off topic !

another sweet design ..im jealious ;)

well ..you can also trade off the amount of space a drive has, against the speed + interface type :) ..which is the way i'd be weighing it up ..i mean surely accounted for, even with some huge sample librarys installed.. what does it take to burn finished projects onto cd/dvd when you are done ;) :) tho yeah, it does at the end of the day depend on how you want to use the machine; as to where prioritys sit.

Okay.. well just running over the final headache of redesigning the front panel to work with 2u in a 19" rackmount case.. feeling abit miffed about wasted space for a minimal interface ..and not enough to put at least all the controls for the mbfm in ;) ..well its finished i think; unless i change my mind by this evening. The current panel design (due to dirt cheap 2u case, tut tut..): still not 100% on it, tho if i go ahead with it; the panel & part mounts will be cut out tonight :) ..oh also, the rear connector panel has been fully populated with all the ins and outs ...cant be bothered to take a photo of that just yet.. tho itll go up in the end anyways :)

well, big reasonably fast hard drives & memory are peanuts these days ..so you can spec up on those regardless ...processors aare still where it costs a segnificant whack if you are aiming to get as much power into the one box as you can. so biggest thing to be comprimising on, is the processor in my view.

hey.. well heres a method i used to use to black out lettering made with punch stamps... I used to paint roughly over the areas with the indents with a tough enamel paint. wait for it to set; then use a really fine grade of sand paper to lift off the paint which is not recessed into the indents.. if the paint isnt rubbery, this will result in a clean break ...and allow you to polish up the front pannel to a nice sheen :) After that ...wipe down & sling over some clear laquer. Quote Therezin: "@Artesia: That s**t is hot." ...hmm which s**t ? :) ...pcbs or something else ? can't bask in approval, without knowing what its for ;) :)

mikeb ...well this system does connect via network cable ..behaves like the daddy of all sound modules that you throw vsts in ...its possible that theres something else out there that does this too ..as i remember reading about a rackmount vst host in a mag afew years back, which im fairly sure wasnt a muse box ..looked at the specs and wasnt majorly impresssed at the time.

hmm.. will probably give the acid bath thing a go eventually, made all the board stock i need for now ..tho yeah, was talking to someone about making compressor front panel using the etch method :) ..if that works ok, rest assured it will become a frequent habbit here.. more interesting & less of a pita than lazertran with my printer.. Btw i spy a neve eq :) ...whats the story with that one ? ..hopefully, liike the SSL Comp, its not a small fortune in hadrd to find components ;)

nice little ditty, im with thornsten on the tenicalities ...compression, mixdown arrangements & maybe bassline would all contribute. Mind doesnt mean you have to take a totally conventional composing approach to 'improve' on what you have ;) Use those concepts as starting point guides, to compare to, and work from :) ..sling it all togeather anyway you like ..experiment, lots ...just follow what you feel works & see where that takes you :)

well.. theres a coincidence... Just when i was researching bulletproof VST hosting solutions, i happened across this thread too :) The following solution is probably inappropriate / too expensive for what you want... tho thought id meantion it anyways... see this post: http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php?topic=8122.0 Its a 2U rack specialised audio computer that does nothing but host & run VST plugins... and apparently its actually reliable with more than decent latency. The basic model sells at £999 and the deluxe one £1500 odd. Not for everyone ...tho i thought it was a damn good idea. (...i am getting sooo sick of vst plugins failing to run reliabily under windows :/ )

And this is where i get accused of being a human bill-board... happened across this product and thought it was rather cool... (probably old news, but i hadnt noticed it so far...) http://www.museresearch.com/ (its the blue box on the bottom right, by richard devine..) it is a highly specialised audio engine / computer running a very specific custom build of linux to serve as a VST plugin host. It allows for many effects, sample librarys, etc to be run simaltainiously.. with latencys approaching 2ms, without really heavy loads ! ....and rock solid reliable (or so they & their users claim). I have to say, the first thing i thought, is why bother... just use a pc ..tho got to admit; i kinda changed my mind on that conclusion... I'd be down right happy to have a box you can just throw vst plugins & not only have them work everytime, but on time too :) (seems like a domain more familiar to games console owners, than computer users..) So unless someone comes up with a free linux build which hosts vst apps, as well and reliably as this widget supposes to do so... (and can be hardware stuffed into a 2u box) ..then i may well be totally sold on the idea :) Well... potentially looks like the death knell for alot of Romplers & other digital racky stuff; if this catches on. At least buying analog hardware stuff is probably a good investment, with that in mind ;) :)

Yep, its another film composer, tho i rather like the tracks he put up on the web: http://www.veigar.com/ mostly classical & jazz. ...and heres where i go off on a tangent. Found out about him, when looking up users of the Muse Receptor 2u Rackmount VST Unit. http://www.museresearch.com/ Which is a groovy highly specialised audio engine / computer running a very specific custom build of linux to serve as a VST plugin host. It allows for many effects, sample librarys, etc to be run simaltainiously.. with a 2ms Latency ! ....and rock solid reliable (or so they & their users claim). i really like this one so far: http://www.trash80.net/mp3s/trash80_-slskrecords-1mm-_hard-to-follow.mp3

i like the sounds from darwinia.. a nice blend & good arrangements :)

good little set, right now i'd be proud to churn something like that out :) ..been too overly focused on making things, tinkering with the small details of making sounds & listening to lots of other peoples stuff.. rather than churning out complete tracks. on the mp3 matter please note.. the choice between mp3 & wav is definately needed.. many people have less than perfect audio setups.. or are stuck with tinny pc speakers n' bad headphones ;) ..and although someone who is a complete audiophile, would be more than happy to download 350mb. Its something which would instantly put off many people.. who'd just go look at something else instead, rather than wait around (such is the impatient fast paced nature of things these days). So giving the choice of both, you simply broaden your audience. Incidentally, im abit of an audio nut & i downloaded the mp3. sounds perfectly fine here :) ..no masking & the subs rumble along nicely to the percussion & double bass.

hmm thats some mighty fine squelchy ambience... reminiscent of the orb's - orbvs terravm btw stryd, have any luck with the ssm2044's ?

speacial paper ? Well the heated bubbler referrs to a method of etching boards involving a tank with an airpump similar to that used in a fish tank; to keep etchant flowing around the board & thus speed up etching :) as for the paper i used, it was just fujifilm 180gsm glossy ** (2 star) inkjet paper (N073170A / BAR: 5036321051242) ..and is about the usual prices for photogloss paper; but cheaper than epson. You might of meant the PnP stuff that smashtv meantioned... as for that i have no idea... hmm... just etched another 2 boards to complete the stock needed to hand; and damn, that dead ferric cloride doesnt half do the eveready bunny thing.. It managed two fairly sizeable boards at 9 min a go ! ...not going to feed anything more thru this batch, as the next board that hits it will probably float ontop of its sludgey consistancy :)
-
ic, ic... hmm.. need to find somewhere i can pick up the acid bath mix bits in the UK... without looking like a hairy, hippy unabomber terrorist :) tried the other etchant i could get hold of, just to see how it faired ..100 or so grams of sodium persulphate dissolved into 1/2 L of water did about the same ammount of boards as the 500g (?) sachet of ferric cloride (around A4). This stuff, as i expected was utter pants to use.. Firstly it needed to be heated to 50c to work anywhere near effectively.. much above this and it starts fizzing in a runaway frenzy... and by the time its 1/3rd done etching ..the solution is near stone cold ..and takes forever to etch.. usually have to reheat before full etching is done. basically its not much use if you dont keep it constantly warmed with some sort of heated tank (or a glass jar sat in a old saucepan of water on the stove). Additionally, although the etchant being transparent might seem like a good idea.. its a pain, as you never know where it might of ended up - or dripped ...unlike ferric cloride ! Also this stuff seems keener on etching of reworked tracks ...so need to apply fixes throughly. And it also works away at the masked sections too ..if overheated for too long. All in all, pretty terrible stuff.. tho it'll work in an emergency. Heres a snap of the stuff in my substitute etching tank (diy, heated bubbler to come soon ;): And todays pcbs: 2x minimoog filters, 2x arp filters, 2x steiner filters, 1x SSL board, 1x orphan SSL control section. Ah yes.. the fun of doctors more industrious tools... boneworking stuff especially wouldnt look out of place in a woodshop/metalshop/iron mongers ....except all those really recogniseable things are made of stainless & sergical steel ;) As for the power tools ...well, it just looks like black & decker on a crome bender..

Hi, The SSL Compressor can be found at this address: http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/ssl/ssl.htm ..each board can handle stereo, with a sidechain too :) The major custom part, the dbx 202xt can be bought as a 'That 202' module Or is emulated with an 5534 opamp & a That 2181 chip. Everything else is standard bits, just need to order the that chips in ...and i need afew ..especially considering i will also need That stock soon, to be able to build accurate moog, arp filter clones for a secret little project ;) Btw the SSL compressor is going to make use of another 2u box i got for peanuts ...by furnishing it with 4x stereo SSL Compressors (8 channels :) ...and 8x (16x :]) if the front pannel & my wallet will take it... The compressor is meantioned somewhere else on this forum ..picked up on it when reading about a That chip group buy i missed out on.

Ah yes, well im also 'scared' of circular saws.. People just dont credit how dangerious they are. And in the last 5 years iv'e heard of people i know personally; or direct friends of.. having some really horiffic accidents with them. (when the wood workshops up and running properly, mine is definately getting ditched for a good table or pannel saw)
