new midibox sid flashes and dies
Milkmansound replied to jdutcher's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
ok - so I can still rock 1.6 if I can get it on there... or I can spend the 3 seconds and do the 1.7 mods. Thanks! - T -
new midibox sid flashes and dies
Milkmansound replied to jdutcher's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
wait - so this jumper chart is for MIOS 7? I notice that my jumpers are different, it goes to one of the pins of J8 near pin 21 of the PIC - I too am having difficulty uploading MIOS, but I am still attempting to load 6 since I have no plans to use the DOUT. (apologies for thread pirating, but this confused me) - Tim -
the blocks are the bootstrap - so MIOS must not have made it on there - my SIDs usually do that high pitched oscillation as well, so it sounds like you are almost there. If the BC337 is getting hot, and you are having problems with the backlight check the datasheet and make sure the basing is correct (I have to put mine in backwards) Once MIOS is on there, you will see it boot up and then a screen that says "Ready" which means it is ready for you to dump the app into the PIC. there are several posts about this - a search will provide you with even more specific answers- good luck - Tim

Anybody use Korg Microkontrol for USB Midi
Milkmansound replied to Milkmansound's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
ok - I spent some more time with this one - still receiving the upload requests: tried switiching polatiry on midi in - no change. Turned off the clock on the Korg, still no change (I thought that was going to be it too :)) I see the bootstrap blocks on the LCD, regulator stays nice and cool, and all solder connections have been triple checked and touched up. The midi monitor registers both the upload requests, and the sysex file being transfered. So I tried the LED test on the midi in - and I find that it does not flicker at all - in fact, it glows fairly bright! So I powered down the core - it still glows from the midi out of the korg.... Should the LED glow like this? Perhaps the Korg is just not going to cooperate with MBHP... in which case, it may be time to go to the store and "Demo" another interface (aka, use it and not pay) Unless someone has some insight into this matter that is. In which case, I would be supremely thankful - T -
Problems with CORE module...MIDI-

I was getting garbage once - turns out the pins were shorting against the metal case I had it in when I pressed a button - is this is the case yet? -

Thanks - maybe this will get me to finally read the manual :) -
I am working on my core module, and everything seems fine, except that I am having difficulty loading MIOS. Last time I did a build I had a different interface - now I am not so sure if the Core is receiving Midi since there are 2 ports, and several different options on the Korg interface. Does it send sysex? This is probably not the place to ask about the Korg controller - most of you probably built your own! - T

Problems with CORE module...MIDI-
Milkmansound replied to grahamg's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
also - check into something that I just noticed myself - if the voltage going to the core drops below like, 5.5V then the LCD starts losing contrast. I had to crank my lab supply to like 7VDC when building tonight before the contrast worked properly. Also - make sure your transistor is based properly, otherwise - HEAT! Good luck - Tim -
What is the best way to desolder a SID?
Milkmansound replied to Milkmansound's topic in Parts Questions
They are suprisingly resilliant against the heat - but with only so many left on Earth, I'd hate to ruin one.... Maybe I will try like, a paint stripper or something - or a crem brulee torch. Why didn't commodore socket them all?!? -
Check this thread also: http://www.midibox.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=troubleshooting;action=display;num=1089146235 sometimes you need to double check the double check... - T

I just got 5 64's in the mail, and NONE of the SID's are in sockets...:-[ (actually, that is not true - one is in a socket, but the number on the chip is 2584 - ?) anyway, last time I spent about 2 hours wicking out the solder, and kind of drilling out the plated holes with an xacto knife - is there a better way to do this? I am happy to spend 10 hours desoldering the SIDS, but if there was a better way, I would be THRILLED! If someone has wisdom - please share it :) thanks - Tim

Re: HELP!! spilt solder on my CORE pcb!
Milkmansound replied to goyousalukis's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
beware the radio shack brand wick though - it will cover your PCB with rosin and burn marks before it wicks off any solder. I prefer the Chem-wik brand if you can find it. Desoldering pumps are really powerful, and may damage the traces. The sucky ball things are ok, but they are a pain to keep clean. Hope this helps... -
The blocks are the bootstrap - this exact same thing happened to me when I was building. Try to get a midi monitor and see if you are getting the upload requests, and confirmations. If not, you may have cable polarity reversed (I did) and then upload MIOS. You'll know when its on there. Peace - Tim

maybe try and switch the chips around (ie, shotgun the parts) and see if you have the same voltage drop - most likely something beyond the chip is causing the problem. Which pins are low?
-
Got it - so it is kind of like recording into my oberheim DX with the step function, not using the pads with a click. What about the memory - how much can you cram into a bankstick? Also, can you load a standard Midi File into it? Thanks - Tim (btw - the morphing thing looks really cool)
-
Can you play the sequences in with a midi keyboard, or do you have to enter them in through the menus? What about quantizing/editing?
-
You should be able to power a little speaker just fine - my Sid blows my head off with headphones plugged directly into it - Tim

This is almost related to the other SID posts of late: my SID stopped playing as well, but I am fairly certain that it is not the 6581, since I put another one in and there was a similar problem (I can hear the oscillation still). The reg was getting too hot to touch, and I had already corrected the basing of the LCD transistor (bcc). So, I was thinking that maybe it was something on the SID board - like IC 2 or 3 (cause they get 5V) - when I switch them around (ie, change IC2 with 3) the reg stays cool. Is it possible that one of these went bad, and this is causing the SID not to recieve data from the core? Also, where does the 2.5VDC come from? I notice that on the SC pin of J2 on the core, there is 2.5V instead of 5V - is this normal? Thanks in advance - Tim

I know, you get what you pay for... free hosting = no bandwidth. I sent in the request to TK...now I just need to get the synth working again! - Tim

saving patches on the SID...
Milkmansound replied to Milkmansound's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
yes, I am using 16x2. That level of programming, as basic as it may seem is totally over my head - even after reading the page a few times. Is there any way you can send me this version of the app - or maybe another user with a 16x2? -
saving patches on the SID...
Milkmansound replied to Milkmansound's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
here is what I am seeing: OSC FIL LFO ENV MOD WT CFG there is no SAV... I added my eeprom after mios and the app was on there - shall I reload one or the other? -
I didn't want to hijack the other thread - but how do I save the patches into the eeprom? Once I edit the sound, and change to a new program, the old one is gone. I have the minimal control surface (step A). Thanks - Tim
-
Yeah - I may want to avoid airports with this one, right?

Here is a link to some pics of my SID, built into an ammo case. I finally got the remaining parts in today, and spent the last 4 hours finishing the project. Thanks again to all of those who offered me help - and I will get some sound clips up there as soon as I get some programs together. (disclaimer) The site was free, so excuse the cheese - I just wanted to get the photos up before my camera died... http://www.freewebs.com/milkmansound/ Peace! - Tim
