  1. Hi rvooh, thank you. I found them on eBay, I needed a switch similar to the tactile ones used on the MB6582 and others but with a slightly larger button (4.5mm) I think the guy still has them available at this link http://cgi.ebay.com/Tactile-Switch-F10V-Blk-Cap-6x6mm-H-10mm-Lot-of-25_W0QQitemZ230352453853QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET?hash=item35a21380dd&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177&_trkparms=|293%3A1|294%3A50 The shipping was cheap from this seller (to the USA), and free if you are in the UK. This just fit my drill hole size nicely, I had some of the smaller ones and realized my drill hole size was too large, which was the primary reason I looked for ones with a slightly larger diameter. It's my second completed DIY electronics project, so there was some learn by mistakes going on. :)
  2. @Fussylizard, that's exactly how I cut the LCD out, drilled large enough holes for a jigsaw blade to fit through near each corner (with some room to file) and jigsawed out the piece. From there it just took a flat file and a lot of patience. It didn't take all that long, I couldn't shut off my OCD while filing, which helped it look nice and straight. :) Thanks for the props everyone!
  3. Thanks imp! And thanks for the info on the controls, I appreciate it. I'll give that a shot this weekend and see how it goes. I used a cheap drill and jigsaw by hand for the LCD, and then hand filed the LCD cutout to get it straight and clean looking. I made a template in CorelDraw for the hole and LCD placement, then printed it on transparency and marked everything on the case using that. Luckily it worked fine without adjusting anything, but doing all the holes by hand made me wish for a drill press!
  4. Thanks nILS! I love how it sounds. Now to create the most logical knob/slider map for my Axiom 61 controller. It doesn't look like I'll be able to map all of them with it, but having some of the more important ones at hand will be nice. The axiom 61 has eight rotary knobs and nine sliders, I think a few assignable buttons as well. Any opinions on what to assign to the eight rotary encoders? I was thinking the ADSR's for the envelopes, and assigning the env depth controls to the sliders . . and maybe the LFO depth and rate to more sliders? Looking for some knob / cc advice. I will have to experiment with this, but just thought I'd ask if anyone has controls set for their controller, and which cc's you have set or use the most.
  5. Hi everyone, I just finished my MIDIbox SID and wanted to share some pics. I'm really happy with it! Thanks to everyone contributing to the vast amount of documentation here. Luckily I didn't run into any big problems, mostly typical things that have already been asked and answered. I had intended to just build a mono box, but after playing with it mono I decided to go stereo, and I'm glad I did, it sounds great! The enclosure was salvaged from things thrown away at my work. It was originally an off white, I decided to spray it Commodore 64 beige and put the 64 nameplate on it. I love C-64 game music and plan to play quite a bit of it using this box, it was the inspiration to build this. I planned on doing some vinyl overlays for the labeling but decided I like the minimal look a lot. It looks like it's from 1982, kind of. I have a second box in progress, actually it's the first box I started building, another stereo SID - I chose a really uncommon enclosure which has made finishing it really difficult. Will post pics of that as soon as I'm done with it. Thanks to Thorsten for making it possible to build this, to SmashTV for the main boards and various parts, and to everyone contributing to the wiki and asking and answering questions in the forum. Now to hopefully post some music I've made with this in the future. A couple more pics (to show some shoddy inside work, messy wiring, failed JB-welding etc) can be viewed here http://www.foundphotos.net/images/MIDIbox
  6. Found a few more links for 5 pin female din in the USA- http://store.daleproaudio.com/Items/neut-nys325?&caSKU=neut-nys325&caTitle=Neutrik%20NYS325%20Receptacle%20-%20DIN%205%20Pin%20Female%20-%20180%20degrees http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/27-145&CAWELAID=220315464
  7. Just came across this today and thought I'd share, it looks like it's coming out for the iPhone / iPod touch in June. Looks to have a lot of cool features! http://www.yudo.jp/en/music/eightbitone <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
  8. That's unreal! So nice looking - I would love to see more pics, fantastic design. Nice song choice for the page too, Cloudscape is my favorite song from Kooyaanisqatsi!
  9. I was browsing eBay for some pedals and came across this MIDI jack. It looks like it is a snap in type, I think - I haven't seen this type before and wondered if anyone else has? Or have any opinions on them? I also found an auction for some snap in ones, but it's for 50 of them. Having a hard time finding them individually, wondering if anyone else might have used them. Thanks.
  10. I just found this company, looks interesting http://www.h-pi.com/index.html Strange you post this, my band is working out a long piece with a several minute microtonal part in the middle right now. We are planning on doing this with samples, splitting the octave into multisamples. It seemed like less hassle to do the necessary math in splitting it up, and just creating the samples since we already use lots of sampling live. My bandmate found some kind of program that allowed you to make a standard midi keyboard to play microtonal, it may be the pitchbend flavor. We haven't used it yet, so the pitchbend style is monophonic? I wonder what those H-PI products are like, they look interesting.
  11. That's really impressive! I love how it looks like it's been plugged into the center of your mod box :) Cool sounding mp3's too, real dirty. The pitch/decay/resonance stands out. Jealous!
  12. Greetings I've built and finsihed a midibox sid v2 that I'm excited to share pics of. It's lacking one feature that I'm hoping to get some help with (and that's keeping me from moving on). What I would like to do is be able to push a single button to turn on several LED's arranged inside. These LED's are only being used for light, and not for any specific function. I'm not sure how many led's I will be using - I'd like to use as many as possible without taxing the power supply or regulators (if this is indeed what I should be concerned with). I've assembled a stereo sid setup using the optimized psu v2 schematic, and have built the simple control surface setup (with a few extra additions, two more buttons and leds). I guess this would be two separate issues, first I'll ask about this minus the dimming aspect. How many led's could I use for this idea, and what would I need to do to be able to turn them all on with the push of a single button (a button dedicated to turning those on, and I guess off when pushed again)? I would like them to be as bright as possible, also wondering which led's to use (I have about 50 standard brightness red T1 3/4 ones I bought, not so bright though) I have one DIN mounted inside my enclosure. I'm only using two of the shift registers on the DIN that's in there, I'm thinking I might be able to use the other two and the rest of the unused pins to connect led's to? I have room for maybe one more DIN inside my enclosure. Also would I just need to add some things to the setup_6581.asm, similar to how the SID L/R addition works ( http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=adding_two_buttons_for_l_r_sid_selection_instead_of_one&s[]=led&s[]=din )?? Not quite sure how to approach this. And secondly, do any of you have some ideas concerning the one or two second delay dimming upwards? The effect I'm going for is a one to two second delay, gradually going from off to full brightness. Basically from dim to bright in two seconds. Or something close. I did find some info here and there on the net about dimming led's using PWM, and saw that someone started a topic here about it as well, but it didn't appear that there was any answer. I would also consider using a potentiometer to control the brightness. I am open to any ideas, I'd love to put something together and try it out. And lastly I appreciate any efforts to help me realize this, even if it's just to be able to turn a mess of LED's on and off with one button, since that is the heart of what I want to do. :) The dimming would be a really great addition, and once you see what it is I've built it into you'll understand. I had a great time building this and not too much trouble doing it thankfully, however I couldn't have had such an easy time without so much great documentation and helpful posts on this forum by all you guys. Now how to get a bunch of led's to turn on . .
  13. How's the progress? Anyone get back to you guys with pricing? I'm guessing no by the amount of time since last post, but just thought I'd ask anyways, excited to get some of these cool buttons. Thanks!
  14. There are some real funny parts, especially the final countdown riff and the part where they come together and kind of 'jam'. :) Pretty terrible, but obviously intentional! If any of you haven't seen the 'shreds' series that St Sanders put up on youtube some time ago, you should check them all out! Slash shreds, Metallica Shreds and Eric Clapton shreds are excellent also. The guy put lots of work re-working these to be bad performances but still be funny, and relatively believable.
  15. I'm curious what your power supply looks like, I have one non official 64 supply made by Tenex that works great. It's a funny story too, I got it by what must have been a blessing from the gods - I was browsing around my local craigslist and decided to check the "free" section, I never checked it and wondered what was in there. The third newest listing read "Huge lot of Commodore 64 hardware and related, on curb MUST TAKE ALL" - the posting was very specific, it had the address and the terms were "if you show up you must take everything, no picking through. Also DO NOT COME UP TO THE HOUSE, do not knock on the door. Do not reply to this ad. Thank you." It was a crazy amount of stuff, no less than 15 c-64's, several monitors, stacks of disk drives, power supplies, the list goes on and on. It appears it was from someone who ran a commodore club back in the day, who went by the name ''The Wyoming Unicorn'. I drive a newerish chevy imapala, and it was full to the gills, trunk and all - once the last item went in I had barely enough room to steer! Had to share that, it was like finding a bar of solid gold at the time. Oh yeah, we were talking about power supplies :) Here's a pic of that third party one I had in the bunch:
  16. Hi Frailn, In case you haven't solved this issue yet, you may want to check your C-64 power supply for a blown fuse internally. I have two C-64 supplies that were acting the exact same way, with and output of 5v on the 14v line (testing from the optimized psu circuit ground and 14v points) - hopefully you have the type of supply that has four screws in the bottom, you can just back those out and check the fuses to see if they are blown. In my case only one of the two were blown. If you do not have a supply with screws, it's most likely much heavier, and completely encased internally with epoxy, which should make for a fun time to get to the fuses. I vaguely recall seeing a post where someone did this though. I did find these posts as well: http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,8164.0.html http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,9351.0.html I'm sure there are more about repairing that I'm missing. If it is the fuse issue, then something may be wired wrong on the psu circuit that's blowing that fuse, so if you replace the fuse and the same thing happens check the fuse again. I'm guessing you already solved this issue though, just thought I'd add this in case someone came across with a similar problem. Here are a few pics of my two supplies, one fixed, one bricked.
  17. Hello everyone, my first post here. I'm wondering if it's too late to order the following: 15 pcs 1D.16 (translucent white) And also, wondering if the quantity is too low to place, or if there are enough requests for that style to justify. Thanks!
