pingosimon Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 I'll be ordering some 6582 parts soon. I plan on building two. Anyone want to join forces? If SmashTV doesn't sell it, I need it. This includes:ButtonsRotary encodersKnobsLCD screensCasesPanelsNuts, bolts, washersIC sockets (if SmashTV doesn't have extras)Maybe some different colored LEDsI'm still researching into exactly what I need, and what really needs to be ordered in bulk, but I figured I'd start this process now. nebula Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 For LEDs and DIP sockets it's hard to beat eBay... Quote
Smithy Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 For LEDs and DIP sockets it's hard to beat eBay...I got mine here:http://cgi.ebay.ie/17-28-PIN-GOLD-DIP-IC-SOCKET-PANEL-ADAPTER-SWAP-G28B_W0QQitemZ270238757600Remembered it being cheap when i bought them, but i dont remember it being that cheap. ;)btw, i dont think Smash has the premium or machined pined sockets which i assume ping is referring to. ( at least when i ordered my parts kit)If you cut up the ic sockets they make for good Capacitor sockets for the sids. Quote
JaseM Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I'd be interested in a panel set. I was working on some files for Acrylic work at Ponoko.com. It's the same stuff being used for the sammichSID. Neat stuff.Lemme know if your interested.Jase M Quote
pingosimon Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 I got mine here:http://cgi.ebay.ie/17-28-PIN-GOLD-DIP-IC-SOCKET-PANEL-ADAPTER-SWAP-G28B_W0QQitemZ270238757600ooh that's nice. More expensive than I would have thought, though. Where's a good place for regular SIL machine sockets, for the capacitors? I definitely need these, as I see myself switching out SIDs pretty often. bhc303 Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 keen!I got knobs though, I have some spare if crew want... Quote
bhc303 Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I am down to 3 sets (15 knobs) of red and one set grey Quote
pingosimon Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 I could just buy some from you then! Could I get a set of red and a Set of grey? Quote
pingosimon Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 Going out of town till late Sunday, so I can't respond to anything till then! Quote
bhc303 Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 done, I will hold one set of each for you...I will pm you the details, let me know if your interested when you get back.cheers Quote

Where's a good place for regular SIL machine sockets, for the capacitors? I definitely need these, as I see myself switching out SIDs pretty often.Extremely cheap when compared to maplin anyway. And since the postage is free.I broke up mine for the caps, because 17 != 8, so i have plenty left ofter.Someone on here said that seller is good for supplying things in smaller quantities, but ive aslo heard the seller is extremely busy and doesnt always reply.Hes selling the SIL header sockets also:http://stores.shop.ebay.ie/ALLPARTSPIPE__W0QQ_sacatZALLPARTSPIPEQ5fQ5fW0Q51Q51Q5fsasiQ5A1QQ_sasiZ1QQ_sidZ290502855?_nkw=header+socket&submit=Search Quote

Smithy Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Hi everyone, I'm new!I'm in on this! I need everything. :)Welcome to the board flip!Just in case if you havent figured it out already, this is a bulk order for the extra stuff you need, besides the PCBs and base parts kit.You can get the Base PCB, Control Surface PCB, and base parts kit from smash tv:http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/buy.htmlIf you didnt already know this have a look here:http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=wilba_mb_6582If you did, then at least this info might be useful to another new person looking at the thread. ;) Quote
flip Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Yes, i knew that. But thanks for the hints, maybe its useful to someone else :)Edit:By the way, which parts do I need from SmashTV besides the PCBs and parts?I think I will need Cable, MIDI sockets and LEDs.I want to build the standard MB-6528.Which cable, and how much will I need?Which MIDI sockets fit into the standard panels?I did not count them, but I think 100 LEDs will be enough? Is there anything else I forgot? Smithy Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Yes, i knew that. But thanks for the hints, maybe its useful to someone else :)Edit:By the way, which parts do I need from SmashTV besides the PCBs and parts?I think I will need Cable, MIDI sockets and LEDs.Awesome! You seem to know exactly what youre doing so!Which cable, and how much will I need?Well you will need the ribbon cable smash sells, to connect the LCD to the base board. You will also need wider ribbon cable to connect the 2 PCBs together.I think the one wilba used is in the wiki, its a stiffer higher quality one, which is less likely to break. Also look at the recent thread by fuzzylizard to see strategys of connecting the 2 pcbs together.Which MIDI sockets fit into the standard panels?Midi Sockets are supplied with the base board parts kit,and they are PCB mounted, (pins are soldered on the pcb), not panel mounted. The back panel is designed so the holes fit right over them. I did not count them, but I think 100 LEDs will be enough?Pretty sure 100 will be enough, if you have a look at the mb-6582 parts list,on the wiki page, it will show you how much you need.Youll also need a 20x4 character LCD display,i think maybe this should be added to this bulk order too,in pings listed i see LCD Screens, which i presume is the window that covers them.Is there anything else I forgot?4 X Dual Gang 500K Potentiometers are an extra, if you want to do the feedback mod. Also you can add that DB9 connector (the one that looks like an old printer port),if you want to do more mods, for example, hook the audio input of the sids upto it,and make a DB9 male to 4 stereo Audio jacks cable.Other extras are a fan, and heatsinks for the sids if they get hot.The heatsinks can be seen the same thread by Fuzzylizard. flip Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Thank you for the detailed answers!Well you will need the ribbon cable smash sells, to connect the LCD to the base board. You will also need wider ribbon cable to connect the 2 PCBs together.I think the one wilba used is in the wiki, its a stiffer higher quality one, which is less likely to break. Also look at the recent thread by fuzzylizard to see strategys of connecting the 2 pcbs together.OK, so I need a 16 pin cable for the LCD and 8 pin cables for connecting the base PCB to the CS PCB, preferrably the 100mil spacing cable Wilba used.Pretty sure 100 will be enough, if you have a look at the mb-6582 parts list,on the wiki page, it will show you how much you need.I checked, 113 LEDs are needed. 64 for the matrix, 48 other CS LEDs and 1 for the power switch.Youll also need a 20x4 character LCD display,i think maybe this should be added to this bulk order too,in pings listed i see LCD Screens, which i presume is the window that covers them.I thought he meant the display with this. Can you please clarify pingosimon?4 X Dual Gang 500K Potentiometers are an extra, if you want to do the feedback mod.Sounds nice. I did not know about that. Maybe I'll add them later, after I have finished the basic synth. Also you can add that DB9 connector (the one that looks like an old printer port),if you want to do more mods, for example, hook the audio input of the sids upto it,and make a DB9 male to 4 stereo Audio jacks cable.I'll definately do that, you never know what you might want to add later.Other extras are a fan, and heatsinks for the sids if they get hot.The heatsinks can be seen the same thread by Fuzzylizard.I looked into that thread, and they seem nice, but I still don't know if a fan and/or heatsinks are really necessary. Maybe I'll add them just to be safe. Thanks again for your answers, they have been very helpful to me! Quote
Smithy Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I checked, 113 LEDs are needed. 64 for the matrix, 48 other CS LEDs and 1 for the power switch.Ooops, should of said "I think" hehe.I thought he meant the display with this. Can you please clarify pingosimon?Actually id say youre right,he probably meant a screen as in a display, not a screen to cover the lcd. Thanks again for your answers, they have been very helpful to me!No problem man. The wiki should provide you with everything you need to know. And failing that, search the wiki, ucapps, and the forum and you should be flying! Quote
pingosimon Posted October 12, 2009 Author Report Posted October 12, 2009 I meant the LCD screen itself.I'm taking a set of grey and a set of red knobs from bhc303.Still finding time to research the other parts! Unfortunately, researching used cars has just become the priority :( Quote
nebula Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 OK, so I need a 16 pin cable for the LCD and 8 pin cables for connecting the base PCB to the CS PCB, preferrably the 100mil spacing cable Wilba used. For the 16-pin LCD cable, you can buy new rainbow-coloured ribbon from SmashTV, but you can also reuse computer ribbon cables. Just snip off the ends and tear off a ribbon as wide as you need. Also don't forget the ribbon cable DIL headers. Quote
nebula Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Which MIDI sockets fit into the standard panels? The baseboard parts kit includes the MIDI sockets you need. Quote

Just snip off the ends and tear off a ribbon as wide as you need.I have lots of those ribbon cables, so I think I'll just use them. Thanks. Also don't forget the ribbon cable DIL headers.Ah OK, so I need two 16 pin DIL connectors and one socket for the LCD?The baseboard-CS connections are typically just soldered, without connectors? Smithy Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Ah OK' date=' so I need two 16 pin DIL connectors and one socket for the LCD?The baseboard-CS connections are typically just soldered, without connectors?[/quote']You only need one, of the connectors, or IDC connectors as smash calls them on his site, these dudes:And youll solder the otherside of the cable to the pads on the LCD itself, because theres not enough room to use a connector. If you look at the pic of the mb-6582 opened, youll see that all 16 of these solders pads are in a straight line, (not 2 lines)I think this is the same for most 20x4 LCD's, the one used in that mb-6582 is a Crystal Fontz LCD.As for connecting the CS to the Base PCB, connectors are generally not used, except in fussylizards case. If youre not going to be removing both pcbs from each other then dont bother going to the trouble of using connectors.its upto you. Quote
Smithy Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Btw, did anyone use a helping hands or board vice to hold the PCBs in place while working on the mb-6582?I dont know if you can get a board vice that size easily, id imagine it would be pretty expensive unless you DIY. Quote
