One thing I have learned to loath building these projects is wiring up LCDs,  It sucks and I hate doing it.  A few years back I saw an adapter for going from a 16 pin SIL header to a 16 pin IDC connector but have not seen anything like that since and never bookmarked the link.

Solution: DIY.  these are $1.75 each at OSH park http://misw.us/sil2dil.zip

Please proof-read and I'll post the files

Maybe you could add some silkscreen hints on which side to solder the SIL header, and how it is oriented / connects to the display?

Yes, the store will get a update as soon as i get some spare time. Im not so happy with the posabillites of it right now.

The silk-screen of the DIL Header is on that side it should be fitted. It has to be soldered first anyway and i will make a assembly instruction for that online someday...

The SIL header can go on either side, it's up to you really.  I'm going for max flexibility here.  I ordered some protos and those have pin 1 marked on the silk screen

I just realised that your layout is actualy single side compatible!

Pin 4 cold go outside of pin 2 on toplayer. As well as pin 14 wich is possible to route on top to the SIL! Wolnderful. You may save some money like that... If you have time its helpful to have lables on the bottom side in case of issues...

Done! Works and clears the metal bezel tabs.  You could us right angle headers for a thinner profile
