I ordered all the parts for a Midibox SID and after putting them together, all i get is a steady 5v from the output of the PIC, which is labeled "BSL v1.2B mios v1.9D".  i checked all the powered pins, and they're all fine.  any suggestions?

With preinstalled MIOS it's normal that you get only a single upload request during power-on.

Accordingly the MIDI Out stays at 5V so long nothing is sent

well, i hooked it back up and tried to upload a few things with MIOS studio but it didn't work, the only message that comes from the midibox is "system reset" on power on, i don't acctually get any other response from it. I'm pretty sure regardless of having mios on it or not its supposed to send an upload request on power on. Any suggestions?

well i don't have a pic programmer, and i couldn't find instructions on how to make one for an 18f452.  all the other tests indicated everything was normal, voltages, midi works on computer end, proper componets and soldering is fine. So the only thing i can think of is the pic needing reprogramming.

It can be assumed, that the PICs from SmashTV are programmed properly, otherwise you wouldn't have MIOS preinstalled - MIOS has been uploaded via MIDI (this is a great quality assurance :))

So, voltages are ok, connections are ok, it must be any other hardware related problem. Maybe the crystal or the 33pF caps?

Another couple of common ones:

Is the optocoupler inserted in the right direction?

Is the D1 in the right direction?

The PIC did say "Ready." to me and give the correct single upload request before I packed it.

Hoping it's something easy and simple.  ;)

tried swapping round the diode and the optocoupler, no change.  the caps should be fine, i have no way of checking the crystal, but being as it came with the kit i shouldn't have any reason to think that its damaged or wrong.
