No, I've heard examples of background sound AND sample playback. Try Turrican intro for example (part of the HVSC): it's a spoken text with a padsound on the background. But I believe that the more complex the sample has to be, the more wavetable voices you have to use, so the less osc's are left available for music.

It's ground, it doesn't matter ;) And by the way, the rectifier ups the voltage by about 41% (minus about 0,7v), it doesn't drop it at all. (When I started understanding the concept of ground a few days ago, it felt to me like suddenly the light was turned on, now I can't imagine not undertanding it anymore :) )

Similar buttons are available at Reichelt, don't know the price, but less than a euro as far as I remember. Search for TASTER, you'll find them. They come with or without LED.

Hi, I've updated the schematic with the "one rectifuer only" design mendelt came up with. Then I selected parts at Reichelt, and implemented the correct measurements of those parts in Eagle. I've been working on the PCB for a few hours (and I should've been sleeping) but I hope it was worth it. I've exported the board as a picture: The space around the regulators is intentionally left open for proper heatsinking (although the 7912 probably will not get hot at all). Any commenst/suggestions?

Hi MEEF, Yes, the C6 can be red and rectangular, and is a ceramic capacitor. You might read 0,33 and perhaps also WIMA on it (it says so on mine, which are from Reichelt btw.) Those 104's are 100nF ceramic capacitors, and are for decoupling the PIC power input. They go on the bottom of the board, you'll have to "surface mount" them, it's tricky but certainly doable. Look at the 5th picture of the Core module soldering guide on uCApps.de, you can see them there. They go over the broader tracks. Smash sold a smaller type crystal which fits under the PIC socket. In the new design it's even beside the socket, but Mike sells the original designs so you can not use Smash's excellent web page layout thingy, unfortunately. I think Mike still sells the bigger crystal, which you'll have to mount on the bottom, because it's too big to fit under the pic. Look at the soldering guide on uCApps.de, you'll find it there. Sounds bad, but only a picture can tell. If you make sure there's contact over split tracks I don't think there's much damage, but if your board is actually split in some way, I hope it doesn't break in 2 when pushing the PIC in... :o So post a picture of how it looks now (photograph or something, you have to host the picture somewhere first though) so we can judge it right. Yes, thats a 7912, I based the +12/-12v part of the schematic on the OPL3 PSU schematic on uCApps.de I don't see mF, does anybody see mF??? ;D (Fixed) I'm using a high intensity LED, but I don't want to blind the audience, so I mount a 1K resistor. For the schematic I agree woth you though, so I've replaced it with a 220 Ohm resistor. I already understand how to route the tracks (took me some time, ratsnest rules!) but for me, the ground wire makes it more understandable! I'm really an electronics n00b. Last night I learned for the fiorst time that on the PCB it doesn't matter in what order the components are placed (e.g. ceramic cap between el. cap and rectifier, instead of behind the el.cap as in the schematic)! So I'll check the dimensions of the parts tonight, update the schematic with the right parts, and build a PCB in eagle. I'll post it when it's finished. I'll leave the trafo off the board, no need to waste that space. Any suggestions on how to mount a Ringkern Trafo in an enclosure (exept for ducttape :) )? Please let me know if that works, if not I'll remake the picture in a smaller footprint. You are totally right: for small midiboxes a common wallwart is sufficient, but I'm not aiming at that ;) I'm aiming for the boxes that need -12v (OPL3, AOUT) and/or a double voltage that is difficult to create with new parts (e.g. +12v/+5v for multiple 6581 SIDs, your 7805 will get hot enough to fry an egg if it has to remove 7 volts, but you already knew that). My experiences with C64 PSU's are BAD to say the least, so I wanted NEW stuff I can trust on. Also, in my own box I'm going to need all 4 voltages, and I believe other people will also want to add AOUT to their SID boxes, and for them this PSU design will be what they are looking for, I believe. The PCB I'll have to recreate, I don't have the correct part footprint, and without that it's worthless anyway. Will give it a shot tonight maybe. Cheers, Alex.

Hi all, Ater my recent "success" with my 9v/5v/GND PSU, and in an attempt to give something back to the MidiBox community, I'm designing a PSU that delivers +12v -12v +9v +5v and GND, so every MBHP module currently available can be powered from it, with clean filtered current. I've created a schematic for it (and I'm not very expirienced with electronics, so all comments are welcome!): The goal is for it to consist of parts that are easily available, for example new from Reichelt, so anybody can build a good, stable PSU capable of powering all modules without the need for complicated tricks and/or unreliable second-hand stuff (after 2 malfunctioning C64 PSU's this has been a big wish for me, I can't imagine nobody else would :-) ). I've tried to build a PCB from the schematic, but as I don't know the right dimensions of the components, I think that's not very useful yet. I've looked at my own wishes when designing this thing, and that is to have in 1 box: 4x Core, 4x SID, 3x DOUT+LEDs, 2xDIN, Backlit LCD, LTC, AOUT, additional Filters. I've estimated the total load not to exceed 2A, but I believe proper heatsinking of the 7812, 7809, and 7805 are a must. I'm not sure if this schematic could also be used for MidiBox LC, as I haven't studied it's power requirements, any advise is welcome. I've read that a Toroid/Ringkern Trafo delivers the cleanest current of all trafo's. At Reichelt there is this trafo: :"RKT 8012 - Ringkerntrafo, 80 VA, 2x 12 V, 2x 3,33 A". Is that a good choice, or are there better suitable ones in their catalogue that I haven't found yet? It's priced at 15,65 euro. Hope to hear from you guys soon! Cheers, Alex. [edit] Found this one: "RKT 5012 - Ringkerntrafo, 50 VA, 2x 12 V, 2x 2,08 A" - it's 2x 2,08 A instead of the 3,33A of the other one, should be enough I guess. Price is 12,30 euro - 3,70 euro lower. There's also this one: "RKT 3012 - Ringkerntrafo, 30 VA, 2x 12 V, 2x 1,25 A". I'm not sure if it can deliver enough current. It's price is 11,95 euro, only 35 cents cheaper than the 2,08A so I think the 2,08 A is preferrable anyway. Also lightly modified the schematic, replaced the +9v and +5v 4 1x2 SIL headers with 1 2x4 DIL headers, and replaced the +12v 1x2 SIL header with a 2x5 DIL header (for adittional 4x SID6581). Maybe I should extend the +12v to a 2x6 DIL and the -12 to a 2x2 DIL, so AOUT(LC) and OPL3 can be attached at the same time. I do have the clear blue LEDs, and instead of creating a MidiBox that can light the entire room when it's on, I'm going to use bigger resistors (1K) to limit the current, so they'll be a lot easier to look at 8) Still have to expiriment with the proper resistor values though, I have a bunch of 5mm that I think are still too bright with 1K resistor in front. The 3mm ones on the other hand should be fine....I hope :)

No, you're right actually. I have to do my homewotk more properly ;D But, as far as I know, you need more than one osc in wavetable mode to create something that sounds good. (at least that's what I think, taking into account that in SID tunes with good digitized sound, you always hear more than one voice stop playing music while the sample is being played. The really complex samples are being played back wile no other sounds are being made....correct me if I'm wrong! ;) )

I can assure you: 230v (what comes our of the sockets here in europe) sure can cause your muscles to contract in a way you're stuck to the live wires... fortunately I've never been in that position but I've heard enough stories of people that have. I've had the luxury of being able to make my muscles release their contact with the wires all the times I've actually made contact with mains (and come to think of that, that's been quite a few times now...stupid me). What I'm curious about is why the different votages where chosen in the first place, I mean why do we in europe have 230v and in the US it's 115v?

Hi Stef, I would suggest you build a Core module first (http://www.ucapps.de/mbhp_core.html), and try to get it working. This will reveal to you if you like to solder stuff, and what equipment you need to buy to get started at all (Soldering Iron, Tin-sucker, soldering tin, etc). You could buy a Core kit (and if you want to invest in the FM right away grab a kit for that module too) from SmashTV (as far as I know SmashTV does not offer an OPL3 module kit yet, just the PCB) or from Mike. I really suggest ordering a kit if you're a total beginner, saves you the hassle of finding the right components. If you finished the Core (flashed the PIC and all) and that was fun to do, then build the FM module (http://www.ucapps.de/mbhp_opl3.html. This will be more difficult as the YMF chips have to be found on an old soundcard, have to be desoldered without damage, and then you have to solder them without damag to your fresh boards. These are SMD chips (very small pins) so be sure to use a soldering iron with a small tip. If you've done everything right, you should be able to control the zfm synth chips via MIDI. Then you're at the stage you're asking questions about now: how to get sound out of it! ;) f you need partlists, a soldering guide, or other general info about the midibox FM look at www.uCApps.de - you'll find everything you need and much more over there. Hi George, HD44780 is an industry standard parallel controller for characted LCD's, mine has this chip too and it has worked - before I tore apart the modules and started over. So, I'm 100% positive that the LCD can interace to your core. If the pcb-leads on the first two pins (or the last two, with reversed pinout) of the LCD module are substantially bigger than the other leads you have a good chance it includes a backlight too, no promises on that though :) Cheers, Alex.

Wat ik heb: kijk eens in het fleamarket forum, mijn msn/email: klik eens op mijn naam ;) Weerstandjes kun je trouwens beter per 10 bestellen, ze kosten toch geen drol (vanaf 10 stuks 0,032 euro per stuk) - uiteraard heb ik er ook al wat weerstanden besteld dus als je echt op eurocenten wilt besparen kun je van de waardes die ik ook bestel wel die kleine aantallen handhaven, maar mischien is een heel klein voorraadje voor die 20 cent extra aan te bevelen? Ik denk dat je voor die voeding een 2x15v ringkern moet nemen, die kun je dan met een eenvoudig schema gelijkrichten, filteren en naar +12 en -12 reguleren. Ik krijg a.s. donderdag (als het meezit) nog wat extra spul door om daar te bestellen - het bestellen wordt dus nog een weekje uitgesteld.

Hoi, ik heb een orderlist klaar voor reichelt onderdelen, nu zo rond de 145 euro dus kom maar op met je lijstje! Zullen we even PMen of mailen over de financiele afhandeling? Mendelt bestelt ook het een en ander mee bij Reichelt. Dat de shop offline is is inderdaad jammer, maar daar zullen we op moeten wachten voor de bordjes. Ik wil in ieder geval al wel bij Reichelt bestellen, die zullen er ook wel een paar dagen over doen om alles goed in te pakken (en dan is het nog maar awachten of alles er ook inzit). Ik ben aan het kijken of ik single layer printjes kan laten etsen door een collega van me, dan hoef ik niet meer bij mike te betellen. Ik heb Smash gevraagd of hij wellicht losse NJU7304D ICs en Resistor networks (1kOhm 16 pins DIL) kan leveren. Die eerste IC is voor het SHX8 bord, dat weerstand netwerk is om felle LEDs aan te sluiten op de DOUT bordjes van Smash. Beide zijn niet bij Reichelt beschikbaar, dus als je van plan bent ooit iets met deze chips te gaan doen kun je het beste nu wat inkopen. Gr, Alex. P.S. Ik wil 2 detented encoders van voti ruilen voor 2 non detented ALPS encoders. Als je dat niet wilt wil ik wel die bourns encoders overnemen, mits ze detented zijn. maak zelf even een orderlist van zowel Reichelt als Mouser, mogelijk kom je onderdelen tegen die bij Mouser exorbitant veel duurder zijn dan bij Reichelt. Ik zal met Smash nog even overleggen over de dure/onvindbare onderdelen. Als je wilt meebestellen ontvang ik graag een gedetailleerde orderlijst. Zeker wat betreft die female sils, dat is een crime om uit te zoeken en ga ik ook niet voor je doen ;)

Mouser heeft ongeveer dezelfde prijzen als Reichelt, maar voor sommige onderdelen zijn ze echt fukking duur (voorbeeld: precisie trimpots: 1,85 dollar per stuk, bij Reichelt 65 eurocent). Daarnaast heb ik een aantal onderdelen helemaal niet kunnen vinden, zoals metaalfilm weerstanden. Ja, voor een euro per stuk ofzo, en dat zijn dan de 2 watt uitvoeringen... De reden dat hij mijn vraag afwees was dat ik wel kitjes wilde, maar dan aangepast, en hij wil -begrijpelijk- geen zorgvuldig samengestelde kitjes verstieren omdat ik die paar dubbeltjes aan componenten niet nodig heb. Ik heb mijn lijst voor Mouser klaar voor zover mogelijk, ik ga morgen de prijzen van Reichelt ernaast zetten om te zien wat goedkoper is. Sowieso kom ik niet aan de 150 euro minimum voor Reichelt dus als ik daar wil bestellen moet ik medestanders zoeken. Als jij een paar (stuk of 3) detented encoders overhebt die goed zijn neem ik ze graag van je over. Heb echt loads of stuff die als ruilobject kunnen dienen, dus roep maar. Gr, Alex.

Alleen weet ik niet of het voor jou interessant is om via een stel Nederlanders te bestellen, je bordjes direct via SmashTV bestellen is wellicht goedkoper... Het plan in NL was om de bordjes op een centraal punt binnen te laten komen en dan iets af te spreken voor het ophalen. Als je helemaal vanuit Belgie moet komen kan dat que benzine-kosten zelfs duurder uitpakken (ik weet het wel zeker!).
