That's a bit unfair...I'll admit there's a lot of crap DNB out there, but there's also some really interesting stuff that's really well produced.

There's actually quite a few different aspects to drum and bass, you can't really call it jungle nowadays. Breakcore is probably the closest sound to jungle, check out Planet Mu for the grimy stuff. There's quite a lot of deep intelligent drum and bass being made, if you're into that sort of thing have a listen to Deep Blue, Electrosoul Sound System, Breakage, Seba & Paradox, Illogic & Raf... Good stuff for a shuffle on the dancefloor. ;)

If you click on the uCapps and DokuWIKI buttons at the top of the page, there'll be some great stuff there. I don't think so, it's a good idea though. Most synths all require the same basic controlls. Look around at synths you can buy commercially, and at the functiions you most use on your software. buttons are handy for turning filters and envelopes on and off and playing with lfo types and the like. Plus, buttons look pretty cool. Read the MB64 section on the uCapps site and have a look at the Electronic Basics thread in the Tips and Tricks forum. Type in MIDI ino Wikipedia and you'll be lead to some good information explaining the fundamentals and how it integrates with software. Sorry I can't provide more detailed information, but it's all covered much more thoroughly throughout the Midibox Forum, the uCapps Website and the MidiboxWiki. The forum search is an invaluable tool, as is printing out all the MB64 Spec/Design PDFs (on the uCapps website) to refer to easily while your working. Good luck!

Now that is an idea! Imagine if you had a whole load of live perrformance midiboxes all in militant ammo boxes and shell cases. You'd have to playing stomping ragga jungle, but it would still look sweet.

Check it out, anyone used one or thought about it? http://www.vivistar.com/vorb/ I guess it must output values for the three different axis it controlls, with velocity and pressure values seperatly. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to assign this to a DIN and have it controll different parameters on VST's and the like. Here's a link to a doc explaining InputSprocket configuration for apps, gives you a good idea of what it could be capable of. I'd love to get one and crack it open but the sock under my matress is looking decidely empty. I need a copy of Max/MSP I guess, then I wouldn't have to butcher it.

I was thinking of maybe removing the handle and then using the bevelled area for a button array or an LCD or something, if it was left on it might get in the way. I guess you could always flip it upside down and use the underside to mount everything.

I don't know if this has been done before, but what about housing a MB in a small money box. I'm thinking of making some small controllers for ableton plug-ins as an introduction to MB and a little cash box would be perfect. You could drill holes in the top for your switches/pots, and modify the little trays they give you to hold PCBs. What would be really handy is that as they're hinged, you could easily get inside it for running repairs/modifications. The only problems I could see would be drilling the box, they usually make them out of pretty strong metal but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard with the right drill bit. you're right, sorry. Everyone at my college are pretty militant open sourcers and I sometimes forget that it's not often appropriate to talk of such things. For the record I have a legitimate copy of live I got through my college for a very nice discounted price - I got too fed up of re-installing my OS every time Live went down. BTW - Rowan: You are an absolute badboy (in the nicest sense of the word), good work on the LED thing, when it comes to building my box I might have to pick your brains some more on the subject.

I've been thinking about this myself, I've been using Ableton Live since version 2 and from my experience of the program I don't think it's possible. The only way it might be done is via follow actions, although I think the Midi commands it uses are all internal and there would be no way of routing them out of Ableton. Check out this tutorial of the ableton site (:::whistles::: nothing to see here). http://www.ableton.com/index/tutorials/tips1104 HOWEVER... What you want my friend is Max/MSP. If you don't know it's an object orientated scripting language - and it's all things to all men. :) What you could do is run a small patch created in Max alongside Ableton that also recieves the Midibox commands at the same time as Abelton and then sends information back out to the LEDs. Once my Midibox is built I'll be creating a large collection of open source Max/MSP patches designed for use with Midibox64's and LC's that I'll distribute to the community. If you can wait until maybe September/October I might have something for you. Alternativly you could buy it yourself (http://www.cycling74.com), but to become competent in the program you really have to immerse yourself in it. Luckily I get taught it for my Digital Arts degree... ;)
