  1. If the solders not sticking to the copper then give it a clean! Copper oxidises very easily, i've even had some boards which have had a greasy film on them which has made soldering difficult. Give it a rub over with some wire wool and the tracks will become shiny again and soldering should be much easier.

    Thanks dude.

Is wire wool used for cleaning cooking equipment? I think we call it something else here.

Coca cola works really good for cleaning coppper so i might give that a go, my father always dips his copper golf clubs heads in it, and it really takes off all the dirt! Great with coins too.

I think i might just order one anyway and use the strip board for an atari punk console or something.

  2. I found these on ebay last night, not sure if they were posted before,

but basically its a hybrid between a matrix board and strip board, with no wiring necessary:

Because each ring is connected it means you only need to break the copper rings you dont want connecting.

So it means you can have a nice clean board without wires hanging out.

I found it really frustrating to try and wire components together, because i kept burning the insulation when trying to solder each connection.

My stripboard (bought inmaplin) doesnt seem to be able to take the solder, and ive noticed it could be happening because its tarnished in places, its not shiny.

These 2 problems almost made me give up on the Optimized Sid PSU, so i think a fresh start would be the best thing to do.

For instance when trying to solder the bridge rectifier, i would keep heating and heating the joint and the copper, but solder just would not flow. (unless i shoved the solder against the iron itself).

I was heating it til the top of the rectifier felt hot, and it almost broke my heart. I just hope to god the next pcb will take the damn stuff, or i might give up on the project all together.

  3. OK then... this has been driving me mad, what is he saying? I've tried finding the characters in webdings and all 3 wingdings fonts, but can't find the start of David so is a no starter, any chance of a clue?

LMAO! I just have done the exact same thing,

i wish i read your post to save me the bother!  :P

    I feel your frustration!

  4. hey all,

just wanted to ask a few quick newbie questions regarding SIDs :)

1: If using multiple SID chips, they would all obviously need to be 1st gen OR 2nd gen im guessing? due to voltage differences, you wouldnt be able to have a mish-mash of different kinds?

2: I know you can have a single chip, or 2 for stereo, or 8 as I've seen the insane version of a SID box with...but could you have say....4....2 x stereo bass lines? or 5 so one does drums or something? basically, can you have any number from 1 to 8?

3: Compared to a Midibox64...REALISTICALLY....how hard is the circuitry in a SID box for a newbie to put together?

    Thanks guys, appreciate it.

Im a bit of a noob practically, but i think i can answer your questions:

    1. Yes, you can have different gens of sid chips in each sid module,

SmashTV ships 2 Voltage Regulators in his Sid kitsfor this purpouse,

so you choose either the 5v one or 9v one depending on your sid.

    2. Remember, you need one Core Module to control upto 2 Sid Modules. So you can have any number from 1 to 8 sid modules, provided you have enough core modules, so for 8 sids, youll be using 4 core modules to control them.

Read up on the engines in the sid manual to explain what you can have running on the different modules simultaneously, id find it hard to explain that one!

    3. I cant really answer this one accurately, theyre both pretty similar, much less wiring with the sid id imagine.

The optimised psu circuit is a tricky thing because you dont have a kit for it, if youve done a midibox 64 then id say youre good to go on the sid!

  5. Sorry to hear about this man.

Do you live in an apartment block?

If so, then that guy is putting everyone elses lives in jeapordary with whatever lighting system he was using.

If youre gonna grow weed, do it in a house that doesnt effect the lives of other people!

Im guessing the guy got evicted since this?

  6. You know what would be nice is either a very simple guide for newbie idiots like myself

Im thinking of doing one soon, ive been on this forum months and still havent the optimised circuit finished.

I keep soldering "dull" joints and its pissing me off, im using stripboard instead of matrix which isnt a good idea,

and im finding it hard to solder wires between 2 joints, without melting the insulation.

Bought a new iron recently and am still getting these dull joints,

bah, if i ever get passed this stage of uber-idiocy ill try and write up a really simple step by step guides for even the biggest newbs like myself.

    Its totally pissing me off.

  7. okay first have a look at the LCD Module page on ucapps.de, its on the left hand side in the menu:

    http://ucapps.de/

From that page youll see that the LCD needs to be "HD61202 compatible".

    Thats the most important thing.

Besides that youre in luck, buhler has recently just built a midibox sid with that exact LCD you linked,

he bought it from the same seller.

Look at his thread here on instructions on how to wire it, its a bit different to most LCDs:

    http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,11156.0.html

    And welcome!

  8. That is one mighty fine and thoughtful speech i must say wilba.

Smash if youre reading this, i hope the stress levels are low, and the morale levels are high!

Keep in there dude, and keep the workload balanced, dont ever let it start to break your back!

Does anyone else feel deep down that we should send the head honchos on this forum a gift or something as a token of our appreciation, for the hard work they put in?

I know we have the donation buttons (something i hope to use someday, when i get a job/welfare of some sort!)

When you consider all the money you save in comparrison to a sidstation it only feels right to do so.

  9. so, i considered the names "Sidhler" and "SickStation" and even "MbSID((STEREO))" but i just felt that none of them quite captured the essence of the dual SID sound.  until i stumbled upon this while daydreaming:  Stellar Implosion Device mkII.  i felt that suited the dual SID sound a little better as well as satisfied my sci-fi needs.  what do you guys think?

[edit] btw, thanks for the comment TD!! ;D

    Its crazy, random and cosmic,

    just like the sid chip!

    Good choice.

  10. Jah!

Hehehe at the end of that trailer... something about in 20 years when hiphop is long gone... like yeh, it made it 30+ years, but another 20 is asking a bit much. lol yeh whatever... and rock long gone? oh please... Don't think i'll be watching that one!

    haha yeah,

but judging from his last comment....

THE HERB MADE HIM SAY IT TOO!

  11. Haha  ;D

    Am i getting predictable?

The Dub Masta would not be the Dub Masta without an Irie Color Scheme  8)

Actually speaking of dub, im really after getting into it lately.

Have you seen the trailer for the Dub Echoes Documentary?

Its being shown at festivals around the world, but it might be a while before we see a dvd release.

The track in that vid is one of the finest dub tracks ive ever heard!

But the only thing that comes up when i google for that artist is this trailer!

Theres nothing on discogs.com or anything!

Sorry for hijacking the thread buhler, ITS NOT MY FAULT, THE HERB MADE ME DO IT I SWEAR!  ;D

  12. Just waiting for the last of the payments, which should be sorted this weekend.  I'll request the PO later today and then all being well will make the order early next week.

Try and be patient, I have to bank transfer the money across, wait for the package to arrive, count bag all the knobs up, write the envelopes, double check everything and post them out yet. There's lots to do for a lot of people, I'll get them sent out as soon as I possibly can, realistically we're looking at some time a bit before the end of the month.

               Eddie

I was just curious to see how last weekend went!  :)

Im in no rush to use these knobs anyway, it will be another few months by time i get to stick them on the encoders id say!

  13. Well im in progress with the MB64. I allready have a name for it, The "MB Dub Masta".  ;D

hehe! will it have a Rasta colour scheme?  ;D

Your mbsid is looking sweet, it looks like an extremely pimped up version of the inferior SidStation!

Theres only one revelant name i can think of since that post.....

    The SlickStation!  :P

We'll have to throw a few more ideas your way, to try to find the appropriate name.

  14. Buhler im absolutely loving that LCD display, its really green and bright.

You got it from here right?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Fantastic-20x2-Character-OLED-LCD-Module-Display_W0QQitemZ350054508482QQihZ022QQcategoryZ26206QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

Its a shame they dont have that colour in 20x4, im guessing OLED LCD's are that bit brighter ya?

Your mbsid is looking sweet, it looks like an extremely pimped up version of the inferior SidStation!
