  2. That's what I originally thought too. But the circuit will only draw what it needs, up to the limit of your PSU. Think of it like your bank account. If you only have 500 "milli-euros/yen/dollars/whatever" in there, then you can take out any amount up to that. However, if you try to take out more, you will have a problem. :'( It's better to have a bit extra in your bank account than too little.
  3. I am also a noob but I did some calculations and with my basic setup from Smash, 15v 1A was plenty. If you are worried, it is better to go high on the amps (that's what I did). To get the precise answer, just figure out what you are going to build in terms of options, look at all your components, and then add all your amp draws up. If they are less than 500mA, you'll be fine. If not, you risk damaging something. As far as I can tell, one of the main variables is the LCD you choose. Different ones can have fairly different mA requirements. Good luck ;D

  5. I've bought 2 C64's from Ebay and neither of their PSUs supply 9V (they both have four pins but only supply 5V - the 9V is dead apparently. I saw someone said it could be a fuse but I have no idea how to open the brick). So the clean-cut optimized PSU is out for me even though I built it. I have been running one of Smash's Cores plus LCD on a 12V 600mA wall wart. I also can get 5V out of my optimized PSU circuit running off of my Ebay PSUs. So, are there any options that a noob could follow? Here is what I was able to come up with. Buy a second wall wart and run it straight into the SID module from Smash, but TK said 100mA is recommended and I would be way over at 600 mA. Or the current wall wart is actually switchable (12V, 9V, 7.5, 6, 4.5, and 3), so I could buy a second one, switch it to 9V and then add the 5V from the PSU circuit. This would give the optimal 14V as described on ucapps.de (but the mA would be high again). Or I could keep rolling the dice with Ebay. :-\ :-\ Or if it was advisable, I could switch the existing wall wart to 9V (or keep it at 12V), "tap into" the 9V that occurs across J1 of the core, and then I could route that over to the SID. Hopefully the current drain on the core + LCD would take the "tapped" mA down closer to 100. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very grateful ;D ;D ;D

  7. I learned of Neutrik audio jacks on the SID-NUXX site. The jacks have 6 pins whereas the SID PCB only has + and a - jumpers. It is a stereo jack but not sure why there are 6 pins instead of 4. Anyway, for now I just want to go mono and maybe deal with stereo later. So in absence of information, I thought I would use logic (uh - make that "noob logic"). What I was thinking of doing is running a regular 1/4 inch mono cable out of a Roland into the jack. Play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star via Ye Olde Sequencer or something. Then I would test the pins with a multimeter to see which is testing positive and negative for the Twinkle signal. After that, when wiring the Neutrik to the board, I would wire the *positive* pin to the negative jumper on the PCB and the negative pin to the positive jumper on the PCB. The reason being is that when testing with the Roland, I would be sending audio *into* the jack, whereas when the jack is connected to the PCB, I would send the SID's audio out of the jack (requiring a reversal of roles). Does this sound right to anyone - or am I cruising for an oozing (of SID components)? I looked at the datasheet (below). However, there is no positive and negative listing of pins on here so it was not informative.   11. Hi everyone. I put together a core using Smash's kit. There is a sticker on the PIC18F4685 that says BSL V1.2B MIOS V.19F. I thought I would give it a revision_id_v1a.zip test as mentioned here http://www.ucapps.de/mios_download.html I was expecting to get the Revision ID back as a CC. I got a CC but I don't know if this is right. I have an LCD but it does not really show anything except it has a blinking cursor. No text yet.   14. Nice! Very distinctive and well done ;) Good songs, good production - you guys are going to do well. The guitar at the end of 'I Fell Off My Name' has a little bit of that New Order bassline feel (Logos too). I was always a sucker for those cool basslines.

  17. Thanks for the warm welcome. Tell you what - I will make an analogous one (with a link to the original one as a citation credit) and then incorporate it into the wiki like you said. That way, it can be updated/corrected (plus, I get to contribute something instead of just lurking ;D). I will also post my Mouser order #s kind of like Smash has. I liked that guide because I can handle "monkey see, monkey do". I am still working on the "monkey read electrical schematic/CAD diagram/etc., monkey build a prototype in his head". ;D Hopefully I won't burn anything up with my Mouser #: 625-W08G-E4 bridge rectifier. PS - thanks also to Wilba whose design is so cool I just *had* to give it a try.

I just spent more time than I care to say trying to figure out how to approach the PSU (since I am just a musician [no electronics skills], sometimes this all looks like Japanese to me ;D).   19. Hate it when I triplecheck all the connections on something and it's still bad. In this case, it was the LCD and I mistranscribed the pinouts. So for anyone else remember it's 1 16 2 15 3 14 4 13 5 12 6 11 7 10 8 9 not 1 9 2 10 3 11 4 12 5 13 6 14 7 15 8 16 So the numbering proceeds in a U-shape, which wasn't what I am used to. Fortunately, my LCD (shown here) survived the abuse and after rewiring it was fine.
  20. Here are a few things that caused me to have a little head-scratching on my journey to an MB-6582. The documentation from the parts and the base PCB construction guides is great but after that the hand-holding dies down a bit. So here are a few things I had to look up ... maybe this will save someone the trouble. Finding the wiring schematic for the LCD should be high on your priority list after the base PCB is done. If you zoom in, you can see a copy of it here in the first figure of page 1 on the right. http://www.midibox.org/users/jim_henry/building_a_midibox_lcd_cable.pdf This is J15 on the core and the pinouts are labeled (pretty microscopically but they're there). Note all the data pins (D0-D7) are on the left column of J15. Once you get a working LCD, download the MB-6582 application from here. http://www.ucapps.de/mios_download.html The one I used was midibox_sid_v2_0_rc35.zip but this may be out-of-date after a while. Install it with MIOS Studio. A walkthrough's here: http://www.ucapps.de/mios_bootstrap_newbies.html I actually corrupted a PIC by stopping the application halfway through. The symptom - the PIC kept asking to upload by sending the upload request sysex string over and over every minute or so. Solution: back to the downloads and got the MIOS file mios_v1_9g.zip. Uploaded it with MIOS Studio. It was normal after that (LCD says MIOS V. 1.9f, then READY). Re-uploaded the MB-6582_setup.hex file and that was it. Success means it says Midibox Sid v... after the MIOS part. If you have other troubles at this step, might be worth checking out http://www.ucapps.de/howto_debug_midi.html
