TheAncientOne
I think I'd save the $50 towards one of these:http://www.elby-designs.com/pixie/pixie-about.htmThe PCB with processor mounted is Au$87.It's a nice tribute panel, but I'd save that type of artwork for the Pixie.I've repaired a couple of real wasps, One huge PCB, and a number of bits that can get very temperamental! The Pixie is probably a better bet, in use, than the real thing, unless your were into doing free form effects with the touch keyboard. Sasha
Does anyone know if it's possible to get the button caps in yellow? No, there are no Yellow variant. Only red, white, black and gray.EDIT:I really find pointless to have printed piano keyboard and having note labels for every key. Often seen in alternative x0xb0x panel layouts. It looks like it is for kids so they can learn which key is which note.
Sasha
I have visited Rowmark meterial suplier and my laserman yesterday.Unfortunately, none of Rowmark materials are suitable for panel as they are to flexible. I was hoping some other type will be less flexible but all seams the same. But there is a solution. We can make sandwich out of Rowmark lasercut/engaved panel and 2mm acrylic subpanel. When glued together they will be strong enough. Subpanel need to be bit smaller so panel want stick out of the case!Rowmark laserable materials are coming in various colors, so few colour/texture options might be possible. I already prepared the subpanel drawing, and I`ll go to laserman soon again to make one sandwich and test this idea. After it I will know the exact price. He offered me to get all the material trough his company so It will make things easier for me as Rowmark supplier sells only to business accounts. Goblinz
Sounds like we're getting there! Any ideas what the glow in the dark rowmark stuff is like... Not sure if it'd be appropriate for panels, but may be useful for other projects. G
Sasha
All their materials are mat so they looks good in dark or in light. I used their Texture material. It is extremely durable plastics for outdoor use. Other materials seams pretty durable too. They also have brushed aluminum emulation that looks pretty good too. You can check the http://www.rowmark.com/ for more info.
Kartoshka
i'm really loving the laserable plastics/acrylic solution! ::) found some useful links to rowmark finishes: Rowmark color chartsome various lastercut techniques explained, incl. rowmark engravings
nebula
Wow, I'm amazed I totally missed this thread until now. I would like an opportunity to chime in, if I may:Typos / whatever aside, I REALLY like Sasa's panel layout with the TR-909 font. I have done graphics work and I understand the principle of a garish font like that being primarily used for headlines, however in this instance it is readable. The font may look a little campy, but I really like that - it looks like something out of the 1982 Battlestar Galactica series.I like "RUN/STOP" on two separate lines, and the "/" serves to tighten it up by making both lines appear the same width. Also by putting RUN/STOP on two separate lines, the label is bigger, making that button appear more important - which it is!I am grateful for all my gear with labels for the jacks along the top of the panel. Please don't lose this, it makes it way easier to set up in a hurry when you can't look at the back of the instrument. The "wave" switch does look a little lonely, somehow ... I don't mean to be an armchair critic but I think it could maybe benefit from a circle around the switch hole?Anyway - I see Kartoshka has posted an eps (which I can't open while I'm here at work) so I probably should be looking at that before I post this. Oh well ... just wanted to throw my two cents in. Maybe, as was done with the MB-6582 panels ordered by Altitude, once we have a couple of ideas we can bring it to a vote? Sasha
i'm really loving the laserable plastics/acrylic solution! ::) ...Kart, here are some better examples 8)Well, it is not Rowmark, but local company acrylic. These buttons are pretty row... not even cleaned well. I just give it a quick paint fill and took this pics.
Kartoshka
Man.. 8) it would be highly unfair to tease us with these sweet handy icecubes you show... these are supreme to anything shown before! Dammit! :)
Sasha
Man.. Cool it would be highly unfair to tease us with these sweet handy icecubes you show... No, it`s wasn`t teasing. I just find your examples ugly, and posted these as they have more in common to the subject than "M" and rising star ;Dthese are supreme to anything shown before! Dammit!Well, I don`t even know which revision of illuminated buttons it is, but I can say I`m very satisfied now both with it`s look and esppecially with its lego-like asembling. Very fast and easy to make. No need to glue it to the button as it sits right on top of the 6x6 button. :)

Sasha
I`m able. But, until now I didn`t do it for profit and I cannot do that way anymore. I don`t have my own laser, nor enough material to do it on demand, so getting it done takes quite some effort, not to mention craziest custom control in the whole world and all those special declarations I need to provide just to ship it to people. But, if you really like to have some special buttons and you are willing to pay for it, than I can do it for some profit.
Kartoshka
;) I fully understand that it takes your personal time and effort, and this is something no one can ask from you, but only if you willing trade it! Sasha it would be a bliss if you can manufacture some of these for us. I'm in. :P
Sasha
As I said before, I will probably offer custom buttons for x0x once I finish everything and when I can test the assembly. They must be different from these to match x0x specific construction.
asafnetzer
Sasha, just a question, the sandwich type panel, how thick would it be ? just wondering if it could be a problem with the pcb mounting and components not sticking enough.
Sasha
I already said... subpanel want increase the panel hight as it will be bit smaller than panel. At least that is the idea. I`m 90% sure it will be no problem with it.
asafnetzer
Sasha, I wasn't clear enough, I'm not worried about the fitting of the upper panel with the case but with the lower part, the pcb with the components.Thats why I have asked the total thickness, as the sandwich panel would be thicker then the original 1.5mm panel there could be a problem with him "sitting" on top of the components, I do not have the pcb at hand so I can not take any measurements but I guess that in fitting it to the case it would have to be attach closer / lower on the pcb and might apply pressure to some high components. Sasha
I also said the subpanel need to be made out of 2mm acrylic. That want reach the components (pots and buttons) and when needed (around wave switch) I left proper square opening. Overall thinkness is 3.5mm. If you browse some x0x pics on ladyada website you will see there is plenty of space between PCB and panel.

Sasha
Seams things about making x0xb0x never go too quick and smooth... It is very hard to put all peaces together to make it happen... always something missing. :-\After quite some time I managed to make this one, hopefully last in series. I have finished it 2 days but I have internet connection failure until recently so couldn`t inform you right away as I wanted. As I already mentioned, this version of panel consists of 1.5mm laser cut and engraved front panel made out of Rowmark laserable material. As it is thin thus not strong enough, 3mm panel is added to support it. I still didn`t find time to glue the panels and test it altogether with PCB and PT10, but quick tests tells me it is good way to go. ;) For now, here is the pix. I`m expecting the price about 25 EUR, but I need to check exact the prices of material to know the final result. This panel is made out of material me and my laserman had at hand so I don`t know exact numbers of panels that can fit onto sheet of Rowmark material nor acrylic. I`ll get back to you very soon with more details. Sorry for waiting this long, but I couldn`t do much to speed it.I wish to thank The Prof for financial help and support! ;)

asafnetzer
Sasha,Great looking panel. Is it the same material you use for your customs buttons ?Just wondering, Could the engrave gaps be filled with paint ?Best regards,Asaf
Sasha
Thank you Mike. I like it too. I just screwed it all together... PCB, panel and subpanel. It is very solid, but to test with all components I really need to have all panel critical parts. After what happened recently I don`t wanna risk any money until I`m 100% sure everything fits perfectly.I must say I`m finally satisfied with results, or better say with balance between effort, cost and result. All previous attempts was very hard to realize because I have to use so many services for a simple job like panel... material supply, preparation for painting, painting, screening...If we did panel in local panel company it would cost as much as the Shaeffers panels, and I most of people are not ready to spend that much. Sasha
Sasha,Great looking panel. Is it the same material you use for your customs buttons ?No, material is based on acrylic but top coating it industrial secret.Just wondering, Could the engrave gaps be filled with paint ?Sure, if you like it. I never tried, but I see no difference... gap is gap. ;)And, here is the red/silver combination too...
Kartoshka
1. great results, sasha - i see real progress on this. Great! it looks very nice with material type you choose. 2. so did we have set final color of the panel? 3. can custom design be engraved, or it's really going to be a nightmare for engraving man and not worth the effort per one-off panel? 4. can you please take a close-up picture of the engraving? like, near large text blocks a.k.a Spiders ;D Also please find the smallest x-height on the panel. Please take picture of that area too. And consequently, what is the absolute minimum, recommended engraving man? 5. Can color be added on the panel theoretically, excepting gaps? 6. i totally agree that real-life test test is neccessary with all parts and everything. thus we could see the whole and final picture, and adjust if required. MUST be tested. 7. really goodlooking one.
