tashikoma
the concept is to control acoustic drum...or anything else I see some people asking on uCApps forum to drive solenoid from a core module. the problem is solenoid need a fixed timing to have the proper action! whith MBseq or a software you could control the lenght (decay) but you've got to redefine at each note the good value and if you change BPM the parameter change (stretching). to have the desired fixed timing two solution: -edit the log (too hard for me) -fixed circuit: at the output pins of a DOUT 74hc595 you plug this circuit: http://electronicdesign.com/test-amp-measurement/nand-gates-enable-trigger-lockout-555-timers R is a pot Time=1.1xRxC with a TIP122 at the output of the NE555 (1k resistor between) I build 8 of this circuit for a DOUT for a special project and it rocks! next step is the roll action: one solenoid haven't the possibility to roll a snare the concept is to use 2 (or more) solenoids on the sna from one DOUT output! the trick is to use a CD4017 clocked by the DOUT output and configured for the number of solenoid (like analog seq). to do Edited March 29, 2015 by tashikoma
flyweight
Hi Tashikoma, Cool project, its on my wishlist for a while. For more info on this you could check on the highly liquid forum. lots of stuff on howto drive solenoids. The rolling thing sounds good do you have some solution on implementing some kind of velocity control? to me this is a hard nut to crack. Btw i bought th e midiwidget form highly liquid for this. That was before i got started with the midibox, Cheers Tim
tashikoma
Hi flyweight with this way it's basic ! on or off.... :pirate: i don't have time to achieve seq part 4017 rolling circuit ... so many project! i'm working to have decent bassdrum solenoid mechanism... have no idea how to implementing velocity.... it could be a nice feature ... just digital control of timer setting of the 555 will work... i see some video on yutub that velocity works...(on a same solenoid and fast retrig capability)

Hello You just need a transistor switching circuit. If isolation is requested use an optocoupler. Best Zam
Elektruck
Thanks for the answer! I did use a transistor switch circuit for adding LED's to my gate outputs so I'll manage that. On the highly liquid forum I found something with an ULN2803A transistor array. I just ordered some solenoids inChina, so now waiting for them to arrive. Zam
Hello Yes if you want to drive lot of gate, an array is good idea to gain space/layout, still be careful with current requirement depending of your solenoid/relay need, also flyback diode in your case (inductive load) Best Zam
Zam
By the bay, what do you plane to do with solenoid ?
Elektruck
I was thinking of building a drummachine something like this And as an extra I would like to add piezo contact mics, to amplify the sound. I want to make some sort of toolbox, with clamps and stuff, so you can turn anything into a percussion instrument....might be super Cheers, Roel
Zam
Cool But as I suspected, the video you link use TO220 package for "power drive" can't say the transistor ref used here but certainly more than 1A capabilities. Check your solenoid datasheet, there is chance ULN2803 can't drive them safely. Like with motor, spike current can be consequent. Elektruck
The solenoids I ordered use only 120mA and the ULN2803 could drive upto 500mA each output, so that won't be a problem. I don't know if the solenoids will be powerfull enough, but when I'll check bigger ones, I'll look into the current thingie. Thanx for your input
