Adding box name on bootscreen

I wish to add name of my box (Junk Box) to the boot screen of my 4x20 LCD. Can I and how to do it?

It should be part of the MIOS if I get it right. When you power up the midibox you see MIOS version and copyright...right? I want to customise that screen and print also "Junk Box" somewhere which is name of my midibox. Aplication is midibox64, but i think it is not relevant.

I don't think I should teach you how to change the copyright screen, that would be illegal. You can add another screen after that.

I don't think it's illegal. MIOS is open source to the degree you can tinker all you like with it for your own personal use. So modify the MIOS source, no one is stopping you. If you need more help than that, you shouldn't be attempting it at all.

MIOS is MIOS. You never changed MIOS. Leave MIOS alone.

Your application is your application (Junkbox). I see no problem in making a splash screen for your application. That way you can have a MIOS splash and then a junkbox splash after that.... Hey, if there's enough space you could even do really interesting things like setting custom characters for the LCD so you could have junkbox logo in a semi-graphical form and then after it does the splashscreen, re-set the custom characters back to the normal ones... All kinds of things :)

TK can decide whether he is OK with you changing the MIOS screen, and he can tell us whether he think it is legal/morally OK or not, but at the end of the day, if you change the MIOS screen, in my opinion you are taking credit for something you didn't do.

I'll be more than happy to help you make a splash screen for junkbox, but not alter the MIOS one. Let me know if you're interested :)

This is Junk Box I want to add spashscreen.

I only have one screen with copyright and a lot of space on my 2x16 LCD, so I think why not to add my box name beside it. I think it is better to use one screen for both because I don`t want 2 seconds splashscreen for MIOS and aditional 2 seconds for Junkbox screen. It is not big difference in term of time but why split it on 2 screens? I want to power it up...splash... and work with it. Hardly I can put my name instead of TK`s copyright and commercialise these boxes ;D

my aplication is not Junk Box, Junk Box is just a name of that funny trash case! I only modified main.asm to have 4 lines LCD and thats it.

At the end I`ll respect opinion of TK. If he think it is not OK to add my box name on same screen with MIOS, I`ll ask no more questions.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply it was a good idea to remove the copyright notice, we all respect TK's work and most would not even think of removing the copyright notice because of that respect. My point was just that changing MIOS to achieve a particular effect (in this case, changing the boot screen) is not illegal, as (I believe) you would not be breaking copyright laws, no more than you would by writing your name on the first page of a printed book. Perhaps I'm wrong, and I have a lot of contraband on my bookshelf!

Yeh I think you're right... If the copyright notice itself is left unaltered, and the name junkbox was added too, then in fact the junkbox would also be part of that copyrighted material :)

I do think it kinda confuses which splashscreen is which - MIOS or JunkBox? OS or application? It's obvious to us of course, but for the uninitiated onlooker, they might get the two concepts mixed up.

Thanks man, I`m glad you like it. Junk Box is part of my Recycle or Die project. It is made of various electronic parts (junk). Weals together with PCBs are from 5 inch disk motors, butons are from PC keyboard and poker machine. Weals for now are not in use as I still waiting for encoders to mount it underneeth. Box is not complete yet so I didn`t send immages to TK. I just post it here for preview.

About the screen... I hope my idea for screen modification is OK, if not i will ask you to help me insert aditionall page for junkbox, but i think it make not much sense.

I love recylcing too, and most of my mbhp projetcs use old stuff as well.

I'd like to list all my ideas to get cheap solutions for all.

For example i use tons of pc floppy rubbans, Usb cables to power my mbhp, old phones or toys (see http://www.mylgd.com/public/Photo/Bill/diy/midibox_3.jpg) to build case, cdrom drive audio cables for my pots, old computer joysticks as buttons, "ring drummer" from the old phones as solenoids... telephone keyboards...

Maybe we should start a topic for "recycling" ideas ?

  I think TK could probably care less how you modify the splash screen, as long as you don't try to sell the gizmo, and don't bug him too much with support for the thing.

It's not about a criminal on trial, it's about I wouldn't feel comfortable instructing such a thing as altering the copyright unless it is OK with the name.

You have to understand that people have stolen TK's work in the past and given no credit, so altering the copyright screen is a touchy subject. This is not to say that you would do such a thing, it is to say that if I helped and you did do such a thing, I would feel responsible. I won't be swayed on this, I will wait for TK. I hope you can understand that I have to respect Tk's wishes on this matter.

Adding whatever text you want to the display in your own app is fine, altering any copyright notice is not.  There is a reason that making a change like this is not so easy. 

If you respect the efforts here at all, changing the copyright notice in any way should be against your religion....  ;)

If the word "junkbox" is that important, have your -app- display it proudly while running, but let's not float any instructions on copyright notice modification to anyone, for any reason.  That's the stuff the non-coding eBay boys would love.

Just because it can be done is no good reason, and a verbatim read of the GPL prohibits copyright mod and ends any rights given for use by the GPL.

Hell I'll give you a second display for your box to show whatever you like if we could just drop this now.  ;D

Look coryright notice in the footer of this  forum, you can add beside copyright notice information who made skin for it and you can see it in the so meny forums. Nobody ever think it is not OK as long as you keep the original copyright notice!

Bollocks, I really like the idea of a splashscreen for your application! I'm gonna do it with the vX, I think it's cool as hell. Don't give up on it just because we don't want it on that first screen, what's so bad about it appearing as soon as that one disappears? You could do a cool animated splashscreen like the superfly sony FX boxes (that wish me a happy birthday thanks to the inbuilt calendar FFS...Crazy talented japanese techs with too much time hahahah)

Go on man, stick with the idea!  :D

Hey Sasa can I be honest with you? Good, cause I'm going to. Don't take it personal, I'm just not the type to think it and not ask you.

When I am apprehensive about playing with the copywrite screen, which you seem so damn keen to do, and you are completely uninterested in doing the same or greater things, right after the moment you intended to, but not sitting with the copyright, that says to me that what you really want to do is not put JunkBox on there, but change the first screen.

This just remembers me on a tool I used years ago to change the boot screen of windows 95. It was a cheap possibility to impress friends. Don't know, if Bill Gates hates me for that ;-)
