  2. thank you, TK! i must have done sth wrong because now i've fried my USB port ??? there can be a lot of reasons why that happened: -first thing i soldered was the GM5 chip. -i used a much too big soldering iron and tried to separate the pins by using a conventional (mechanical) desoldering pump. -i probably had the wrong soldering station and was not earthed with wrist wrap. -i had scratched off the jumper connections AND partially the jumpers, too, with a knife. -after reading your answer i soldered a bridge connecting all 3 pins to an existing soldering point on ground. -it could be that i did the last step with the optocoupler chip in the socket :o but then i fried my USB, what means i don't even have access to internet now (WLAN)! :D ok i knew about my skills & therefore i bought 3 boards and 5 chips, hoping at least 1 would last till it comes to building the GM5x5x5. so i think i'll build a new GM5 without making the mistakes and connect my internet via cable. (+ buy a new USB port, any recommendations here?) hm i thought default configuration would be for use with 5 IOs. but then i'll try that! EDIT: last behaviour: plugged in USB, LED didn't light up but all windows related to USB/internet closed on the screen. nothing frozen just no USB anymore. ...and maybe some smell (without smoke) from GM5 but i took off the plug immediately
  3. hi! i just "finished" my GM5 pcb, complete with eeprom (J1 J2 J3 disconnected (knife)). i couldn't wait to plug it in (just GM5 in USB of PC, no instrument yet) result: as soon as plugged in LED is on, but not very bright, but neither report of pc like "new hardware found" nor LED brightness change when sending midi notes from MIOS keyboard... is this normal? can i damage sth when i plug in a synth / sampler?

  5. i already have one YM2149F !!! i took it from my old Atari 1040ST (socketed, easy to pull). but i decided to do my first try with the recommended 8912 i just ordered, because i actually couldn't make such a protoboard myself due to lack of knowledge... i wouldn't even know where to start. but i'll safe it for the future when i have more experience.
  6. hi clem! which resistor value/length are you looking for, what would be the best? do you prefer video tape (bec. availability)? perhaps i could measure some old multitrack and stereo recording tape too. but i actually think those tapes would easily wear down after short use because you'd always have to press a metallic surface on a very thin layered film...

  9. the MB6582 doesn't contain AIN or AOUT modules AFAIK so you'd have to add them as modules. i don't think there's room for these in a Wilba PT10 case but you could go for an own solution. for the connectors you'd best look at the dokuwiki and and compare with www.uCApps.de MBHP to learn how AOUT and AIN regularly are connected. i don't know either.
  10. has anyone fixed LEDs (modulation matrix) on the front panel using HOT GLUE? i'd like to do so but i wonder whether the heat could damage the LED. so anybody tried this before? edit: picture link no longer available
  11. ok just ordered 2 AY 3 8912 chips there. they also seem to have RAM chips i really need!!!

  15. i would like to learn how to do that. but i wouldn't call me the right person to start such a project with because i actually don't know anything about it. at the moment i'm still trying to understand the basics (messing around with my sid). so if even you regard it as not easy to create then i'd think looking for another C64 keyboard and trying to build it as recommended would still be difficult enough for me, at least at the moment. but i can try it of course but that will take a long time as far as i know me, and probably very stupid questions from my side. :)
  16. great project, lemonhorse!! i'd like to try to build that synth too. but it seems as if i had thrown away my old C64 after salvaging its 8580, stupid but i can't find it anymore. so i wonder whether the C64 keyboard could be replaced by a something like a self built button-matrix? i'm sure it would take some time for me to build and to understand... but it's a good sounding synth!

  21. as long as your order isn't shown as shipped at SmashTV's store i'd say it's not too late to at least ask him whether you could add sth.
  22. hi! the MB6582 provides all you need to run a 8 sid setup, of course not only the baseboard pcb. the single sid pcbs are a modular solution you could chose as well. but if you already have ordered the pcbs for MB6582 you don't need additional sid, core, din, dout pcbs, it's all inside! here's some info: http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/ http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=wilba_mb_6582 then you'll find further information in the sid section here on the forum!

  24. i've tested some antistatic nylon bag in which ICs are packed for use as a ribbon controller. i haven't completed this project until now because my main circuits didn't work (psu?). it has the required resistance of 100 kohms when cut to a band of about 20cm / 1cm. these were recommended for a diy belt controller project, the builder did it with adhesive tape and graphite powder and a brass strip, i intended to use this nylon with a violin string. the website i found the original circuit with the adhesive tape has some very interesting projects with vacuum tubes: http://www.electronicpeasant.com/
