philetaylor Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I didn't post before as I was bidding myself and didn't want to end up in a bidding war with another MIDIbox user but there has just been an auction on Ebay of 29 NEW (old) 8580R5's. The final price was £875.00 (998EUR) !!! The guy says he found the tubes in his loft and thought that somebody might have a use for them. Personally I think they have probably paid a bit over the odds as individual (tested) ones sell occasionally for about £25 each. I was probably being a bit hopeful with my maximum of £350 :) Cheers Phil EDIT: Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150539424415&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBUAA:GB:1123 Edited January 5, 2011 by philetaylor Quote
Shuriken Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Omg, i wish i found 29 on my loft. Anyways, i am not sure the price was over the odds. Recently Amigula's 8580 sales have been around 30 euro's aswell. I have even seen one go to 67 euro :frantics: Quote
Hawkeye Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 whoa - my estimate is that they will be worth more than their weight in gold in a few decades :-) Quote
nILS Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I don't think they will... Once the prices actually start to get really ouchy it'll inspire a lot of people to make 99.9987% perfect clones in FPGA/... Quote

Hawkeye Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 bah all those clones will never reach the superior audiophile qualities of those ceramic cased 6581r1s - they protect against cosmic rays, you know! http://www.digital-circuits.org/sid/CSG%20Micrographs/6581R4/6581R4-fulldie.jpg Quote
Davo Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I still want to get my hands on the masks and make exacting duplicates. It shouldn't be too terribly expensive to tool up for a 30-year-old design. Quote
nILS Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Nah I guess, $20-50 will get you all the equipment and plans. Quote
orange_hand Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 (edited) Hehe, I can say that it was a close fight, but unfortunately I didn't win :-) And actually I thought that is is a little bit strange that this item wasn't mentioned here before ... for a good reason I think, but it hasn't helped. Cheers Matt Edited January 6, 2011 by orange_hand Quote
Shuriken Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I still want to get my hands on the masks and make exacting duplicates. It shouldn't be too terribly expensive to tool up for a 30-year-old design. I am sure that the thought "if only someone would make new sids" crossed the minds of many of us. But to be honest to get a hold of the mask would be quite an achievement on it's own. Then having them produced in a fab at reasonable costs, well that would be nearly impossible. The market for sid chips isn't big, only us idiots are willing to buy them. And with releasing a couple of thousand chips on the market, prices would pummel. Quote
JRock Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Yeah. That would really hamstring our elite status :geek: If you could buy a SID in every corner drugstore and ordinary, everyday people actually had any idea what the Hell I've been babbling about for the past year   Quote
Hawkeye Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 well and don´t tell the chinese, that sids, when properly crushed, crumbled and boiled with chicken eggs are actually increasing sp%$m production Quote
