nILS
Ah, look at that - that almost looks like the design I made (and forgot about) a while back :) Nice!
grizz
I'd love to hear some samples! I wonder if they sound similar, but less noisy... That would be pretty amazing for recording purposes!
kristal=
@nils: cool! you should run a small batch of your pcb design. would love to buy 1-2 pcbs if they are afforable. i mean the material costs for a swinsid should be in the range of 5-8 EUR incl. pcb manufacturing. great for someone who wants to fully stuff a mb-6582 but shies away from ripping 8 c64. @grizz: sorry, no sid module at hand :( i can only test it in an old c64, whether the shop owner sold me legit stuff or not. why not buy one, if i can confirm the functionality? it's 18EURs incl. shipping to you. sparx
Kristal Is any soldering required for the Swinsid nano or does it come already built? Is it stereo or mono output?
kristal=
@sparx: it came already built. i assume it has a mono output, as it's not a stereo twin sid. just the nano version of the micro version. btw: further information on the nano @ http://www.forum64.d...html#post500290 and http://www.forum64.d...insid-pcb-v1-1/ and http://www.forum64.d...no-swinsid-faq/ Edited December 4, 2011 by kristal=
sparx
I tried to read up on it vefore posting, but my German is not good. Anyway, a quick email to Donald and I've got one ordered.
kristal=
@sparx: cool, post some recordings, when you get it. couldn't test mine with the c64 due to a broken video output. but it made the typical "ping" start up sound, so i guess it's working. middleman
I got the news from igi today. This is fantastic!! I had wanted to build a 6582, but the thought of sourcing sids, or murdering 64's put me right off. The price is very affordable too. sparx
Kristal, thanks for your very prompt reply to my PM. Mr Postman delivered a package from Retro Donald early this morning. Ordered Monday, on my doorstep in London by Thursday, pretty good. As requested here are some very rough recordings: SWINSID 6581 no filters SWINSID 6581 with filters Overall, it seems very quiet. Tune is the start of the demo song on the Prophet cartridge.
sparx
And here is the real thing: Real 6581
kristal=
@sparx: Sweet. You're welcome! Yeah, the non-documentation of the NSS is very annoying. I plowed through the forum and brought up this: the first bridge (Set Board jumper) is for opening/closing R3. R3 is just a resistor for increasing/decreasing the volume. The NSS is not affected by the 9V/12V issue as far as I'm concerned. The R3 controls only output volume level and it is not related to this bug. This bug exists in all SwinSID revisions and it affects very small part of tunes. SwinSID is checking for envelope triggering only once per sample and when then registers are changed inbetween you can hear randomly triggering or fading volume level. To fix this checking must be done every register access and this requires more processing power. With faster 32MHz CPU there is a chance to implement this in further firmware updates for ATMega88.[url=http://www.forum64.de/wbb3/user/14-x1541/]" http://www.forum64.de/wbb3/board65-neue-hardware/board288-sid-co/board294-swinsid/36481-swinsid-atmega88/index5.html#post470526 Tried it with my C64 which runs on 12V (the original SID was a 6581R4). After pulling the Set Board jumper, it "pinged" louder. But I think it's best to ask Retro-Donald, because he should know best. sparx
I sent an email to Donald first but yet to get a reply, he's probably in a long queue at the post office! Those samples don't really do the Nano SwinSid justice, here are a couple more. 8580: Nano SwinSid, no jumpers on a C64C: What exactly is the SwinSId? Is it a 6581 replacement, an 8580 replacement or a generic "SID" replacement? Whatever it seems to do the job....
kristal=
@sparx: Two sites that should answer your question, because I don't know :-) http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid_manual_swinsid.html http://www.swinkels.tvtom.pl/swinsid/swinsid2.htm
swinkels
Hi, I am the creator of the SwinSID and I can answer your question directly. There are two jumpers. First is used to setup output stage and volume, second is for filter selection between 6581/8580 model. There was special firmware version specially designed for MIDIBox with extended filter range but this feature is not enabled in standard release. kristal=
@swinkels: Does that mean that the SwinSID doesn't care whether it is powered by 9V or 12V?
swinkels
@kristal=: Yes, because it is powered from 5V line only.

sparx
Hi swinkels Which jumper setting is which? When is a volume reducer required? Good work.
kristal=
I think I figured it out: Set Board jumper: bridged = decreased volume due to R3 being on / unbridged = increased volume Filter jumper: bridged = 6581 / unbridged = 8580 according to x1541 who said: "Ja er ändert die Emulation auf 6581 wenn er geschlossen ist." Hope Swinkels can confirm it.

Hope Swinkels can confirm it. You're right. R3 jumper also changes output biasing. This was needed because older C64 boards has bit different output stage and I decided to simplify desing by adding jumper instead of a more complex but universal solution.
