  1. Yes, if you want to send SysEx messages, you have to understand what you are doing :). Look here for a more in-depth explanation of the concept. Also, you will need to understand the manufacturer's (Roland) implementation of that concept. It's complex, but it's not magic. With MIDIbox you are on the right platform for doing this! Best regards, ilmenator
  2. 13h = 19d 19d / 128 d = 0,148... As you can't easily represent floating point values in a hexadecimal system, you use the concept of a remainder. --> 0 x 128d (a) --> 19 x 1d (b) ==> total is (a)+(b)
  3. Then please share, just in case anyone ever comes across the same problem! Thanks, ilmenator
  6. There is an old thread covering this topic - it turned into a MotorMix discussion, see here. Best regards, ilmenator
  8. I second Doc's notion, they do not feel nice. I would even say that there isn't any point in using them unless you have to control a parameter that has an "endless" range, e.g. an angle from 0 to 360 degrees as in surround panning - but then, you wouldn't want the linear belt to scale to an angular position...
  11. So you get text messages on the LCD, but no graphical representation of the knob? Does it look like this? Best regards, ilmenator
  12. The answer is: SD card module, look here.
  13. Yes, this is definitely a good approach. After all, this way you will experience what type of workflow suits you most. And, you can have a MIDIbox that perfectly suits your needs. Best regards, ilmenator
  14. I never said that that was not possible. I said it was easy if you only connect one (e.g. the lower) half of the floppy connector pins. :P
  15. This means that the spacing of the metal thingies that normally cut through the ribbon cable corresponds to 2,54 mm. This is perfect for single-sided grid style PCBs. (On the other side of the PCB the metal thingies are also spaced 2,54 mm, but with an offset of 1,27 mm. If you are using etched double-sided PCBs, this is not a problem, though.)
  16. Yes, I was originally thinking of one .txt file per SysEx instruction, but grouping SysEx instructions that belong to the same device is even better. GREAT! Best regards, ilmenator
  17. Could the file structure on the SD card kind of represent the SysEx (sub-)menu structure then? Say, I call a folder "Korg M1" and have two text files "Bank load", "Bank save" in them; then, in the SysEx strings menu I select "Korg M1" and can then subsequently choose between "Bank load" and "Bank save" (the text files) in that folder (which are executed immediately after selecting/loading them). I guess this would mean endless flexibility... :P Best regards, ilmenator
  18. That same connector can be used to connect to an SD card. Also, the cable side can be soldered directly to a PCB.
  19. Wrong thread? Can't find a reference for that quote anywhere...
  20. That's just perfect for de-icing a frozen MIDIbox! :D Come to think of it: does it work on a frozen Windows too? It should, as it is Scheibenenteiser... :D :D
  21. 74HC04 - the complete schematic is attached to my second post. You may want to change the values of R16-R20 and R21-R25 accordingly if you use different (=standard 20mA) LED types. Best regards, ilmenator
  22. I support bigger fonts, and increasing the contrast somewhat, like e.g. choosing an even lighter gray as background color is also something I would very much support. It's just this aggressive, neon-like color scheme that contrasts so wildly with the soothing light blue I've grown to love so much over the years... ;) Do I sound like an old bag already? :P Best regards, ilmenator
  23. The case is from Reichelt, very cheap (9,80 EUR) but designed very well: it has like rails on the sides so a 100mm wide board slides in nicely. The LED holes were drilled by hand using a Dremel (well, a handheld Proxxon Minimot). The rectangular openings were done drilling holes in the corners and using a jigsaw. This is rather unprecise, but the MIDI sockets nicely cover that. And for the LEDs... well, I guess you are right - haven't thought of actually making that a feature 8). The unit (or its twin) is probably going to sit in the back of a rack, which means that when I move the rack, I only have to unplug the USB connector instead of many MIDI cables. Best regards, ilmenator
  24. :o Oh my god, not again!
  25. One more picture and the schematic as attachments in this post. In the schematic, K1 connects to the GM5 board. Best regards, ilmenator ilmenator_GM5_05.JPG ilmenator_GM5.pdf ilmenator_GM5_05.JPG ilmenator_GM5.pdf
