why do you need motorfaders? You could just as easily use rotary encoders with LED rings to produce the same effect to give immediately visible controller feedback. The idea would be to have some divisor of the level for whatever layer is active to show changes in value for that position. When you grab the encoder, it moves the level approximated by the LED ring to whatever level you please. It may not be as accurate as a long-throw motorfader, but it would be a good compromise as it would save on tons of space on your panel. If you want something like this, check out the Doepfer Regelwerk. http://www.doepfer.de/rw_e.htm although it isn't motorised. :)

I think omitting the app is fair enough so that it can mature and gets users in the habit of bootstrap loading/updating using MIOS studio, but programming the OS probably is a good idea so that people without programmers can bootstrap load the app using MIOS studio, no? Not that I'm getting a pic from Smash anyway, just the other bits. :)

i'm a bedroom producer.. have been on and off for near 15 years now and have played on national radio and at several raves back in my native adelaide - I'll integrate my mb6582 into my setup and use it for both some of its characteristic arps, as well as some other 'gee, i didn't know that was a c64 sound' type stuff. it'll integrate with my other synths (access virus, juno 106, electribe ea-1) and drums (tr707, electribe er101) hooked through my emagic unitor 8 in a mess of 8x8 midi cable nirvana.. but i still need a desk and am thinking of getting a Korg zero 8, which will be a great control surface for my all my hard synths as well as softsynths etc. Am also thinking of building a MBseq - which I first began collecting bits for in 2002! :P I just love playing and twiddlin knobs!

I watched the youtube clip, and have an idea for you. Mount the dbeam sensor on a microphone stand behind the keyboard, facing your face. Play the keyboard/synth with both hands like normal.. lean in toward the sensor/away from the sensor to control the dbeam! Then you dont have to sacrifice one hand to control it, and its a more natural position because sometimes you move close into the keys anyway when you play with feeling, and away when you go quiet.. Obviously this depends on what you're using the controller for, but I reckon it would be a far better performance tool if you did something like this. I guess the only caveat might be that if you want superfine control, it might be tough to do with your face!!! :)

Can anyone tell me what the advantages of PLED/OLED displays are over LCD/Backlit LCD? From my reading, lifespan is a major issue with PLED/OLED and I'd love my MB-6582 to still work in tip top condition in 25 years time if at all possible. Furthermore, I've seen indications that the organic material in OLED displays is extremely sensitive to H20 (same might be true for LCD, not sure). Although the sensitivity to water and water vapour is typically taken care of in the display casing, if an OLED does excel and outdo its nominated ~5000 hours of use then maybe aging polymer, or outdoor, or humid environment use (e.g. equatorial residents) could see the quality of the display taper over time if manufacturing practises aren't flawless. Some of these issues might just be blown out of proportion with real world use. After all, its a piece of synth equipment so its not going skydiving or doing anything overly adventurous, unless you plan to take your MB-6582 and play at an outdoor rave/concert to 50,000 ppl and it starts raining down Woodstock style. So, what is the gobsmacking feature? Or is it just the appearance.. maybe I have to pay Wilba a visit and have a gander at the real thing. :)

Hell yeah, I have one of these babies. Populated with a whopping 8mb of sample mem. :) :) Those old 30pin SIMMS come in handy sometimes. I just wish I had some winxp drivers for it. Its great for old 90's demos though.. :)

Hey Wilba, I'm keen for a base PCB that can handle both SIDs.. In in .au I was going to do it from scratch, but I've got my first baby due in 8 weeks and my time is going to be even more busy than it already is. I still have my nice enclosure for my control surface.. implementation is another thing though! I also need more C64s to cannibalise. :) Lucky there are still plenty going down here in melbourne. hoorah :) cya mate k

yes they are great cases. I found a local distributor here in Adelaide, Australia and bought one some time ago. I still haven't stuffed it with all my midibox gear yet though, my PhD has gotten in the way.. I'll be finished the PhD soon, so will have time to finish my midibox housed in my hammond case then!
