There is also the matter of phase offsets to consider in wave packet composition. Do you actually want to do this on arbitrary wave forms? Are you specifically interested in speech synthesis? A lot of work has been done on speech. You could have a look at formants. You could have a look at this page describing resynthesis done on a Kawai K5000 addititive synth. If you can come to terms with the name's approach, I think it provides a reasonable walk through for the topic.

Hey Doug, fantastic to see you back in action. Hope all is well with you. Cheers, madox

Agreed. Sounds like you have a short. This can happen really easily, and a blown cap or transistor/reg that has opened up can cause it. It could be a barely perceptable wire strand or solder tag, also. I would be testing impedances first, before plugging it back into your USB port. Impednace tests can be misleading, but are not bad as a quick check. If you have already run the board from USB after the supply failure, then do post back with results.

A Radiculously versitile USB Eprom/Pic programmer - G540
madox replied to Artesia's topic in Miscellaneous
I'd swap you an image for a Matrix 12. Seriously though, that seems a well featured programmer. How is the software? Is it custom made for that programmer? How's the OS compatibility? Also, I hadn't really bothered to back up my working EPROMs, but I will look into it now. I've not had bad experiences in this regard, though that doesn't mean much. I'm not sure I have tested any EPROMs over that sort of time period. Thanks for the tip. btw, your Matrix 12 induces undying jealousy in me. Yesterday I was outbid on an Akai VX-600, the poor folks' Expander. That just makes me poorer than poor, doesn't it? -
This gave me a laugh, thought I'd post it here:

It's really good to hear Doug is well again. Was a bit concerning for his wellbeing.

Nice one. I'd love to hear some samples.

That's a handy bunch of adapters. Would they be DIPW / WDIP? Futurlec also have some SMD adapters and PLCC adapters, though not DIP.

Hey, nice job putting that together. I thought the drumming felt pretty natural. Do you use MIDI drum pad triggers, ala eDrum? eDrum is definitely on my to-build list. edit - What do you think of the XP-30? Does it still compare favourably as a workhorse synth these days? i guess that would be your main control keyboard, yeah? Do you have some expansion ROMs for it?

Hi Nils, That's a nice chunky rhythm guitar sound. Is the lead solo played on a synth? Which part(s) did you play? Indeed it feels very up-beat. That has picked me up on a late Autumn evening, while working at my computer. Cheers!

Hi Phil, I'm listening to Inetent now. Nice mechanised rhythm. I quite like some industrial sounds like this. Quite often when I'm hearing indsutrial rhythms such as in certain factories, or on long distance trains etc, I can quite zone out with the musicality of the mechanisms. Cheers.

inside CASIO - FZ10M 3u 16bit sampler/additive/subtractive synth
madox replied to Artesia's topic in Miscellaneous
How is the additive synthesis on this jobby? I also think the technical inferiority of old hardware can provide grit and character not found in highest standard audio. Bit crunching is testament to this. I use additive synthesis on a Kawai K5000R, which is not bad. Also not a bad way to experiment with sound. I wish it were a little more flexible controlling the phase of each frequency component though. -
MIDIbox CV PCB (CORE+AOUT+DINX1+Bankstick) + 2 x MAX525

Hi Sonicwarrior, My PCBs and ICs have just arrived in Australia. Cheers mate edit - forgot to mention, I like the IC packages. Pretty neat. I'll reuse them at some stage. -

I'm listening to your tunes. Pretty cool. The music I used to do didn't have nearly as much to it, a what you have done. I still like to use a fair bit of software, but really like my hardware synths too. I see your myspace page mentions you also used to use Amiga. Cool. -
I've just been reading the MB64 and MBLCD pages, and have a few questions about what may be possible with the displays. It seems that MIOS is able to address multiple displays, of various types, provided the code is set accordingly. So I am wondering if it may be possible to customise the MB64/MB64E application code to operate multiple displays in a similar fashion to the Nord Modular G2s. I happen to have 4 128x64 KS0108B displays left over from a previous project, and am thinking along the lines of having half of each of these displays dedicated to a group of 8 knobs. I think this would suit most of my applications, whereby I may assign a group of 8 knobs to control one instrument. Then each display could at least have as default, a label pertaining to the group of knobs, mainly to jog my memory as to the settup. I haven't examined any of the code for MIOS or the applications yet, but I am assuming it would take a fair bit of work to get this running. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the capacity for the PIC to handle overheads involved with such a set up? Cheers

Hi Nebula, Thanks for that take on the NS10Ms. Puts things in perspective a bit, and looks like tuning a sub really addresses the shortcomings well. Regarding the rep as being fatiguing, do you think it is merely due to them being very revealing? I can definitely understand your point about learning to mix on one's speakers, although I have not yet done so. Cheers, madox

I'm preparing to make a MB64 or MB64E, and just wondered how people are using these in the studio? I have never used a generic controller like this, though I do use my Nord Modular G2X in this fashion. The G2X has 8 rotary encoders, with 4 2x16 character LCD displays to show what each encoder is assigned to, etc. I make control patches for the G2X, and I have the control parameters displayed, when I come to use them. So, I just wondered how people use their MB64/MB64E's? Do you just remember what the pots/encoders are set to control? Does anyone use old school patch sheets (I mean actual sheets of paper)? I made an audio patch field before, and had the front plate painted as a white board, so I could write what each socket was connected to; this worked a bit, but was not a great solution. I think people may well use several different control configurations; doesn't it get confusing sometimes? Cheers edit - added image of G2X controller extracted from manual

From newbie to wizard: Max's PG-300/MB synth programmer project
madox replied to Max Romantschuk's topic in MIDIbox HUIs
Hi, I just wanted to say I am happy to see this project happening here. I am planning on doing a PG clone as well, but not for a little while yet. I'll be interested to see how you go. In terms of your reg getting hot, power dissipated in the reg is the voltage drop across the reg x current through it. Definitely check for shorts on your LCD, and also in the connecting loom. It could be a small solder dag making a partial connection. Also, I'm not sure what your settup is, but do you have a pot to trim the backlight current? If you have a multimeter, it shouldn't be too hard to measure the current going into the LCD on the 5V rail. Cheers -
Yeah, I agree a mixer is the best thing for being a mixer, but the cost is usually pretty high to get lots of inputs. My interest in using a PC interface is really just to save money.

Hi Artesia, thanks for the recommendation. I think I have not seen those in the shops I've been to. I'll keep an eye out though. I don't think I'll be buying speakers for a while though. Cheers
-
Yes, that is what I was thinking. So, I will be getting to know these speakers for a while to come. I probably will buy more expensive speakers at some time, but not for a while, and I will keep these speakers to reference as well. By the way, how do you feel about working with your NS-10's? They have a rep as being excellent tools for monitoring, but pretty fatiguing, and not very pleasing on the ear. Do you think the rep is appropriate? @stryd: Yeah, there was dancing done at my place last night too. Actually, pretty much any time I had to get out of my seat (and sometimes while still in my seat).

Hi Strophlex, Are you in the exact same situation, gearwise, spacewise, and wifewise? :o Hurts sometimes, doesn't it. At least now, I have a reasonable amount of gear to get started with, when I have time. A fair bit of my gear needs repairs though. Also, there is so much good music software around now, requiring less space, and less money. I still love my hardware too, though. -
DAMN STRAIGHT! You summed it up nicely!

Well, language isn't an issue for me, but I just didn't think to hold my tongue on this one. I usually think that discovery is part of the fun of a hoax joke, but I can see Wilba's point of view.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about, except mine are made from scrap packing material. That is also exactly what I would like to use as stands, except I don't think I will be able to afford something that looks as nice as the example you have shown here. I'm more likely to go for a formstone garden pedestal. Still, if I can find something like you have shown, that would be great.
