  1. I disagree, but then again, that is what makes Wikis so nice since it's all about free flow. For you, it might not be a big deal. For me, it is. I can say with certainty that I would actually keep my pages updated more often if it were not for that CAPTCHA. It spoils the otherwise awesome experience. Again, in my opinion.
  2. I use my own custom MB-6582 PSU which is basically some fuses (don't forget those), a 9VAC transofrmer, some regulators, power resistors, and heatsinks. Not much to it really. I plan on making a nice printed board eventually - just haven't found a good enclosure to stuff it all in to make everything nice and tidy. Without knowing the enclosure dimensions, printing a board might be wasteful. When I do get it all finished though, I plan on putting it on the Wiki. On that note, there is some stuff on the Wiki and forum already on how to go about making your own PSU. You have to be careful with mains, yes, but otherwise it's not really all that difficult. Best part is that you have fuses that blow before your transformer does. The C64 PSU sucks. Anyone who says otherwise must enjoy some bit of masochism or has never had to figure out how to open it up, dig through a mountain of epoxy just to get to the fuse that's probably blown. No thanks. Besides, making your own PSU is hella more fun :) Just my $0.02
  3. Do we really need a Captcha for registered Wiki users? Shouldn't the registration process just be more thorough? Reason I ask is the damn thing is pretty hard to read and you have to do it every single time a page is modified. It's the only Wiki I have used to date that does this. I don't see the value in it is users are required to register before modifying any content. The forum does not have Captcha's for instance (Please please PLEASE do not add one!). Just my $0.02 but Wiki participation might be better if it was easier to modify pages.
  4. Yeah if you don't mind, or send me a PM if you prefer. Are you using a full-length 1U case? I was hoping on saving some space there and was going to mount my ports to the board (at least for this one) since I don't be touring with it or anything. I'm actually looking for a clear top case since I can see the LEDs that way without having to route them elsewhere :)
  5. Anyone have recommendations on a case for the GM5x5x5? In doing measurements, it looks like it would fit in a half-length rackmount case? Are the dimensions of the board fairly common? My goal is to see if I can find a clear plastic box for it or have one made via Pokono but I may have to settle with something less flashy for the time being, and have thought about a rackmount case (as soon as I have some rack space :)
  6. Board received yesterday and, I'll admit, the red does look good.
  7. Very nice! Bears resemblance to the Virus TI Snow in some ways. Really cool look!
  8. Haha wow I didn't think 'd be the first nor that I would have send you one only 2 minutes after you send them out. I'll definitely take you up on that beer if we ever cross paths IRL. Either way, thanks again for putting this bulk order together!

    127 Arps

I think there is a patch folder in SVN, though I haven't checked out the SVN repository in a long time. That said, I both agree that non ARP patches should go elsewhere and that we need an easy way to make community patch-sets. I too have a new favorite patch based off Analog Dream (I think I used 3 or 4). I also think there was another post about non-ARP patches, although, sadly, no one chimed in if I remember :( Perhaps we should try again? The vintage batch pank is for pussies! :)
  10. Hmm yeah I'll have to check it out. Not a bad price though I wish there were some previews (didn't find any on the site I went to). I'm a pretty big Airwave fan, at least when I want to listen to something deep.
  11. is excited about getting to finally build a GM5x5x5!

  12. Sure :) I mean we're just talking about a transformer and some fuses. I've done plenty of silly and bad things but have never electrocuted myself when dealing with mains. Pretty clear cut and simple rules to follow there. Hmm, actually I already have a spare transformer I could use for this...I just need a plug....*ponders* Anyways I see your point, but it's not like anyone HAS to build it. There are workable options ready-made and available that, while less than ideal, should get the job done.
  13. I think I'm using a switched 12VDC adapter (will have to check, but I'm almost sure it is as it is small and I'm pretty sure it says "switched" on the label :) with no hum. It's a bit noisy but it's white noise type stuff and not any actual hum. I intend on getting it replaced at some point but for now it works. My suggestions is to DIY one :) For some reason, PSU's make me hot. *shrug* A fully fused non-switched PSU would be pretty cake to make. Basically just a transformer and some fuses. Rectification is happening on the Sammich anyway so is there need to add anything more than that? The hard part (and this is the same problem I have with my MB-6582 external PSU) is finding a case for it that looks halfway decent. Otherwise, the parts are cheap, reasonably easy to assemble and could be made cheaper perhaps with a bulk order.
  14. You can get around the expired demo install by deleting the license file. I'm not saying you should do that, I'm just saying you can :) I'm running 10.6.2 and do not have any problems with Mandolane but that's unfortunately really all I can offer :/
  15. Hmm I'll have to check out Tattoo it looks pretty cool! Live ships with *some* loops, just not a lot. And it's true I can build them but I have always found it hard to reproduce the full sound of a real recorded dancey loop. Not sure how they work that magic :) The instrument pack that comes with Live box-set, though it is also a bit sparse, is really good. I used the piano from it for this song, but it also has some nice strings and brass ensembles.
  16. Hmm well, the Sys-Ex commands to do a full dump of the Sammich is: F0 00 00 7E 4B 00 03 70 00 F7 F0 00 00 7E 4B 00 03 00 00 F7 F0 00 00 7E 4B 00 03 00 01 F7 F0 00 00 7E 4B 00 03 00 02 F7 F0 00 00 7E 4B 00 03 00 03 F7 Putting this all at once into Midi-Ox does produce a full dump it seems, but I am able to get Midi-Ox to reproducibly crash when trying to reply the full dump. Doing is dump one at a time seems to work, though it does take quite a bit longer. Ah well. At least I have a solution now, but thought I would share my Midi-Ox experiences. Interestingly enough, the SIDv2 Editor can read the SysEx dumps Midi-Ox creates, which isn't too surprising. I assume that goes both ways so that is a solution there as well.
  17. Yep the first simple synth lead is the SID. The fast arpeggiator is actually my Virus. I wanted to use the SID for that but was having a hard time figuring out the clock stuff. I finally figured it out using the Wavetable stuff (with help from TK) but I'm still piddling with that. I really like fast arps for fills though. Sounds so cool! Ableton Live owns face. There are a few things I don't like though. You can't record MIDI CC events in the Arrangement view outside of a clip. That's annoying when I want, say, my cutoff to span multiple clips. You can get around that with VSTs though. So for those that have an Access Virus TI, I'm envious :P but you can use the VST to control it. Using or another VST to MBSID bridge you can do that as well. That's really the only thing I don't like. I do wish I had more drum loops though. I was hoping Live (standard) would be chock full of them but their weren't quite as many as I hoped. If you can, getting Live Suite would be best but I just couldn't afford that all at once. I'll probably upgrade to it eventually though. In short, I still highly recommend Live. It has had a dramatic change in the way I make music, and for the better!

  19. Oops yeah there is. Funny thing is that I actually went to that link before I posted on the forums but thought it was for controller the effects. Damn. Oh well, that's definitely what I needed, thanks! Sorry to be a bother!
  20. This might be more of a MidiBox thing so I apologize if this is the wrong forum but how do I initiate of dump of my MB-SID configuration? My Virus, for instance, has an option to dump all of the RAM banks out via SysEx commands. So I can capture these using Midi-Ox and have a backup. I frequently do this when I finish a so that I have a backup that does not require any specialize software to restore. I was searching around and found that you should be able to do this by sending a SysEx message to the MB-SID but I can't find how to figure out what the SysEx message itself is :) Any thoughts? Beggars can't be choosers, but as a feature request, having a menu option for this would be fantastic :)
  21. After a 2+ year hiatus (partly due to building my MB-SID, at this point, a few times over :) ), I finally managed to finish a song, complete with a MB-SID cameo :) Not a very good cameo but it's there (can you tell which one it is? :) I called the song Hello World because it's a song with quite a few firsts, both musically, and personally. I originally came up with the name because it was my first song to finish using Ableton Live (after moving a way from my old and busted version of Cubase that was about 5 years old). The name ended up encompassing more. But don't worry, it's not a heavy song. It's simple electro-piano song with good mellow overtones. Hope you like it, but it's not that's ok too.
  22. This looks awesome, labelwhore! In terms of the NRPN stuff, it took be about a day or so to figure out how to set that stuff up with my M-Audio Axiom (so I could map its knobs to MB-SID stuff. It's really not that bad once you get used to it and I think you'll appreciate the extra control you have in the VST. That said, even if it is just the lead engine, your VST looks really cool! Gonna fire this up later today!
  23. BAM! We just hit 100, folks!
  24. You might look =psu]here as well for some ideas. The idea using using resistors to drop the voltage to the 7805 seems to be a good one and is what I use. You're not avoiding heat this way, but using resistors to dissipate some of it instead of trying to make the 7805 do it all. My design fits in a plastic box but I plan on using a gutted PSU case for better heat dissipation since it has room for a fan and is also metal. So I can mount my resistors right to the chassis and I have an instant heat-sink. I am a HUGE fan of custom PSUs because I hate the C64 brick of death. Maybe it is was remotely user serviceable without a circular saw it might be another story :) Plus, making PSUs is fun and is a good way to learn some useful information (though, as a disclaimer, you ARE dealing with main AC power so don't be stupid). The only downside is that it makes using the standard power switch that comes with the MB-6582 kit a bit more difficult. For the interim, I put a switch on my PSU directly (which is still a good idea, if a little inconvenient). All that said, there's plenty of information about how (and how not) to make PSUs on the forum that you should find helpful. I tried to dig up a few but a quick search should give you plenty of stuff. The Wiki, too, has various designs. There's a lot of ways to go so it really depends on your needs and your plans. If you want to do the AOUT or SSN filtering stuff, for instance, you might want to factor in using a bi-polar supply.
  25. The non-linear editing is the tracker-like interface that Sonar and Live have. At least in Live, you make clips for each channel and can play in any order and any combination with clips from other channels (which also include playing them in-sequence). This has a number of nice advantages when arranging a song since you can do looping of, say, a drum track and then play around with arranging leads and basslines, etc. It's very similar to how you would do it in a tracker (SoundTracker, Fast Tracker ][, Impulse Tracker, Renoise, etc.) except that each channel has its own set of patterns. In most trackers, all channels are lumped into a single pattern, though I think Renoise 2.5 is going to break that trend. The nice thing is you don't have to make music that way if you prefer conventional recording. I have not heard what you are referring two called MIDI Echo but it sounds like it's the same thing. I think of it more as MIDI routing since you can route from one interface and input channel to another interface and channel. Live can definitely do this as it was one of my big requirements. You can do the same thing with the MIDI-Router hardware box I believe but since I'm running everything through a DAW it's nice to have native support there. Oddly enough, what Live cannot do (easily anyway) is name your MIDI ports. So my Virus ends up being "Delta MIDI In (1)" or something non-sensical. It will be a non-issue once I get a GM5x5x5 built though, although I'm still waiting for more people to get added to nILS' *shrug*
