I think he was talking about the multimeter fuse, good info though enth.

OOOOooooooh, that's a bit good! Can't believe I missed tis thread untill now!

It's just the way it appeared to me as a reader of this forum. I'm not saying it's intentional in the slightest. BF just said that's what he learnt at uni, not that he's been to uni and that you hadn't so your opinion is invalid. From my angle it looks like you were trying to nip something in the bud (from maybe bad experiences of people who think they know everything due to uni education, we all know some people like that, which is why I laugh at some of my uni-graduated mates as they serve me a pint in the pub ;D) but from my perspective BF wasn't trying to quash your opinion, only stating how he formed his. It's probably not my place to get involved but I'm just trying to explain how it looks from my view. Not disagreeing with the whole elitist education thing, just saying that i don't think that's the case.

We're not going to define music here, it's not possible it's a good discussion subject though. Probably because "music" means different things to all of us which is the beauty of it and maybe why people really connect with music. Untill this thread I didn't realise how undefineable the term was. It's music, everybody knows what music is.... I don't think anyone can describe it (it's an individual thing). The subjects being covered in many books and online and from what I can see this is an age old question going back to ancient times. This site discusses some of it http://www.mfiles.co.uk/other-what-is-music.htm. I think the aspect of pattern recognition is interesting, something that's not been mentioned in this thread so far. One thing that i find interesting is bird song.... It seems to have a lot of the elements of "music" melody, a repeated pattern, maybe even some sort of rythm (repeating of certain bits, although it changes)... It's lacking on the artistic side of things as it is just a way of communication. If I was to take a bird song and play it out on a keyboard though with exaactly the same melody and timing, but this time with some sort of beat behind it, then it would fit in to my idea of music. If I came up with pre-arranged beat and melody which I understand as music and take away the beat, then it's still music, even though it'd be very similar ot the bird-song. I guess it all confuses me a bit, I've only just started to see how philosophical it all is! G Stryd, I know your going to shoot me down for saying this, but from what you've said it looks like you have a bee in your bonnet about uni students. In the same way it's wrong for someone with a degree to disregard somebody elses opinion on the grounds they don't have any uni education, the same is true the other way round. I always see quoting books on philosophical things as a pointless excercise anyway, there is no answer, only reasoning/opinion; Form your own, don't recite other peoples! You don't have to have done research or read books to have an opinion on this. As to the definition of music, just remember this is a philosophical thing, and as such cannot be learnt or taught, either in uni or not, only discussed. In general I would expect that somebody who has gone to uni would have done a fair bit of research/reading on their particular subject... not to say that they've done more than what somebody who hasn't been to uni and just has an interest has. This uni/none uni argument is pointless. I didn't read the comments as meaning any aggression or one upmanship towards anybody. I think we need to chill a little, this is supposed to be a nice friendly forum. Uni has it's good and bad sides. At work we tend to get uni students that are qualified, but haven't got a clue how to do things, as most things don't mirror exactly what they've been taught. This is kind of frustrating, but then again when something really technical comes up then their education comes in. Generally I've never seen the point in uni, I've always seen work (experience) as being more important. I left school and carried on with my job. My friends who have just got out of uni are having problems finding jobs and are mainly working in bars. My work will fund me to do an open university course so i think i'll end up in a better position. :D Now can we all kiss and make up and maybe even chill out a little?

I would hope that even a cheap multimeter would have some sort of fuse in it to stop it setting on fire in situations like this. Not that i'm having a go, but if your using a multimeter to test mains electric then I would think that learning how to use it properly would be a bare minimum. I would have personally put a *whack in the quote. Mains voltage should be avoided unless you know what yolur doing and there are no other options G

I had a problem with my C64 power supply last night. For some reason my newly bought cheap ass multimeter doesn't test for AC voltage as low as 9V (is fine for around 200V!). 5V was working fine. I tested the DC voltage across the rectifier on my PSU board and got nothing. I rigged up a light bulb to the 9VAC pins and nothing. I got as far as searching ebay and opening a "wanted UK C64 PSU" thread and thought I'd take the old one to pieces to see what was in there and was presented with two internal fuses... One was burnt out... Problem solved, fuse replaced and all voltgas correct (ish)... I'm getting just under on the 12V rail and I think my 5V is also something like 5.15. I'm taking a risk that it shouldn't too much difference... I'd appreciate it if someone can let me know if it's too much of a risk. This is after the regulator anyway so i'm guessing my multimeter is badly callibrated. One point angel... The schematic is your friend. Even if you don't have too much electronics experience, you should be able to work out what's going on and where the power is going, just break it down in to sections and see how it correlates to your PCB. If you try these things and you manage to sort a problem out then you will be dead chuffed and will have also progressed along the learning path and equally as important you can help somebody else out if they encounter the same problems!

There's an easy answer to that.... Perspex case, maybe with some nice LEDS :D

Which I suppose is where wrong music comes in! My friend has some wrong music that has no structure at all, just a series (and a parallell :D) of f*ck*d up noises. Not traditional music, but still has artistic merit. Not always particularly pleasurable, more of an experience, sometimes as traumatic as a nasty bout of diahorrea, but somehow quite satisfying at the same. My definition of music would be similar to yours... A series of sounds which is listened to for it's artistic merit (not necessarily enjoyable).. but then gain, where would poetry fit in.

I seem to remember something about a "repetitive beat" beaing used when the government wrote up the criminal justice act in the UK (The act brought in to stop raves and basically took away a lot of civil liberties), although this may just refer to dance music. I disagree about music having to have a melody... what about drumming?

I opened up the power supply last night and found that the whole thing wasn't set in resin so I could have a look at the supply board. To my delight I found that one of the fuses has blown. Fuse replaced and I'm now getting the correct voltages coming out of it so am no longer in need of a replacement. I'm a bit gutted about this to be honest as this is the power supply from my childhood C64, which got taken to pieces and trashed when it broke all those years ago, which i'd checked the power supply, but ti didn't occur to me as only half of it wasn't working (Just the dataset I think.)... I think I still have all the pieces somewhere, maybe I can get it going again! G

[MB-6582 related] PT-10 box Europe Bulk Order Thread
Goblinz replied to gajimicu's topic in Bulk Orders
How does Mouser compare with getting them directly from Pactec? http://www.pactecenclosures.com/Plastic-Enclosures/PT-10-pricing.html I can't remember how much we paid last time. In the last bulk order the cases were ordered without the metal panels to cut down on postage, this may be worth taking in to consideration this time. E -
Just realised i'm in the wrong section, please can a mod move this to fleamarket.
-
I've just found out that the 9V section of my C64 PSU has had it... Does anybody in the UK have a spare one that they would like to sell me? G
-
LOL, it happens to us all.... It's either that or screw all the cables in, which I hate doing.
-
Voodoo chicken?
-
You could always use a different connector. IE, cut the one of the power supply and replace it with something that's easier to come by.
-
How are any of you managing to finish your mb-6582's?!!!
Goblinz replied to dubka's topic in MIDIbox SID
To clarify. The first lot of PCBS were nothing to do with Smash. A bulk order was organised way before Smah announced that he would be doing parts kits and PCBs It's unfortunate that you heard about the MB-6582 way after the bulk order was organisedbut all you can really do is wait. -
Yes, let me know when you're in the area. Always up for a goth night, (depending on trains).

I'm sure I've seen fliers/invites for their do's, don't they do squat parties round the bradford area?
-
I'd much rather have Crystal clear sound over loudness any day. I recently went to Antaris and Fullmoon in Berlin. You could quite happily stand infront of the speakers and have a conversation with someone and the sound quality was amazing. They had between 6 and 8 stacks of speakers. Last year at VUUV they had an even better speaker system on a large circular frame going round the dance floor which was really nice to listen to, especially when you stand in the sweet spot right in the middle. Places I go to in the UK tend to have two speaker stacks, on each side of the stage sounds loud but not clear.
-
There's still plenty going on. I live near a city that has lots of old dis-used warehouses, then there's the squat-party scene. Free parties seem to have taken over from the outdoor rave scene, but there's still some illegal outdoor parties going on. We organised one a couple of months ago but it all went very wrong... :-\
-
Nice patches... especially the one starting at 35 seconds, I can see me using this (or at least attempting to use it). Can't wait to get my SID finished. G
-
I kind of screwed up my hearing in my right ear. I go to a lot of indoor raves and was stood near the speaker at one, which was just about tollerable and my friend started trying to make herself heard over the sound system my shouting down my ear. I ended up with what sounded like a kettle whistling from my ear which I now get if I stand too close a to a loud soundsystem without earplugs. It's important to look after your ears if your going to loud raves/gigs. I'm starting to get really pissed off with places that play it too loud (a lot of friends say it's because i'm getting old) but I just dont see the point of having a stack of loud speakers in one place when you could spread them out to get a more even sound throughout the hall, or maybe even spend the money on a better quality speaker system with less output. Now and again I've been to a club wchich is reputed as being the loudest indoor dub soundsytsem in Europe, although i'm not sure if it still holds that title. If you're anywhere in the main hall you can't roll a ciggerette as the bass bounces all the tobacco, tip etc all over the place. sparking up a lighter is impossible too because of the "wind" from the speakers. Yes there's stil people dancing away qquite happily infront of the speakers... Pointless. G
-
Please excuse my ignorance on this but are you routing the inputs to different outputs (and vice versa) there? I didn't know this was possible with this thing!

I've downloaded an electronic verion of "The C book" it appears to be aimed at people wih programming experience though, any suggestions for absolute beginners books?
