All you need is a trackball - they're commonly available from computer shops and Ebay. I have two for old ADB bus Macs, so they're not that rare. My post office has one on the office supply shelf for $50. Then de-case it and mount it in your MIDIBox, running the USB or PS/2 cable out the back. Trackballs on ebay.au

I have a small question: given the limitations of the PIC you're using (the new one if I remember right), what are the theoretical maximum x and y dimensions of 1/ a LED and button matrix 2/ a LED-only or button-only matrix? While Googling for suppliers of RTV silicone in Australia I found lots of hints online in model-making and cinema prop making circles. Seems like others have found Dow Corning silicone sealant ideal for their purposes. I'm thinking of making a mould for an 8x32 button array out of that or the RTV silicone.
