  1. Ouch! You could test them with an LED and resistor like a pair of normal switches I guess... It's extremely unusual that you got a number of dead ones from smash. Heck, to get even one would be unusual, but several in one box says to me that one of two things happened: The package was damaged in transit (got wet/crushed), or, you fried them when you soldered them in. Something out-of-the-ordinary definitely happened to them all......
  2. No, that's an electronic recording of acoustic music :) 'course, anything made since like 1980 has *some* kind of electronic processing, so *everything* is electronic music now.
  3. Totally missed these questions sorry! Not caring about any supposed 'benefits' of manual routing/not caring about what trace-tetris players say/etc. You can think of it as "manual routing is for suckers" or "autoroute rules" or whatever, the words don't matter, you get the meaning. Unlikely. The 'prettiness' is a visual effect evident of the fact that the traces were laid by paying close attention. If you set the autorouter rules up properly like you've mentioned, you can get a very pretty layout too, and again, it's because the designer was paying attention. Sure if the designer doesn't know to avoid for example long parallel traces, they might wind up in the layout... But that's 'pilot error', and it'll happen with or without the autorouter. Point is, if the layout has been carefully crafted, it will show in the screenshot ;) I can see why you got confused by the word pretty though - often the evidence of such craftsmanship is aesthetically displeasing. The first thing that springs to mind is someone talking to ultra in the chat, saying that the IIC traces were not symmetrical, and he instantly said "they were but I moved them for some reason". He couldn't remember what it was, but the point is, it was aesthetically "ugly", but if one follows the traces they'll quickly see that it's a good way to workaround a a tricky pinout or something, and is actually kinda "pretty" after all :) Happens all the time... I think that this is one thing we all agree on. Maybe you can just mentally replace the word "pretty" with "carefully crafted". Nice attitude dude, what's up with you in this thread? Chill, Winston :) Edit: fixed typos
  4. Damn, someone already thought of that joke
  5. Line 255 jumped out first because it's formatting wasn't a match for my code highlighting and it didnt look like a comment (like the others do) but it was definitely treated as a comment by the compiler, it was just a missing space.... Most of them were really minor like that, just a missing space/extra LF/extra tab here and there... nothing worth "fixing" Well it' like this: It was working, you changed something, and it started nuking PICs. Chances are, your next PIC will go the same way, until you figure out what you changed and un-change it ;) un-change my core..... set me freeeee </Joe Cocker>
  6. Stop polishing your knobs DW.
  7. Easy, you keep a table like you did, with standard requirements; and an anchor to a paragraph elsewhere on the page with more detail :) Maybe you could do a table with Minimum required, TK's setup, and maximum supported.... or something...
  8. http://www.cqham.ru/super/tech/ttl74.htm You could, with some wiring, use any inverting schmidt trigger.... or noninverting and an inverter... etc....
  9. Yummy. Why custom wound? Surely such a thing already exists? Edit: is there any point in making it 7V and using a vreg? I know toroids are nice and clean, but I'm thinking about voltage spikes...
  10. No, it's 8O. Big difference; try mixing them in your code ;)
  11. [me=stryd_one]does the "it's working" dance[/me] Well he's right and wrong (said stryd, not actually knowing what he said but taking a guess). Yes, they make room for trouble (obviously you've heard his take on that!), but in the world of DIY and many newbies, they're almost a must. In fact in the case of the opto, I would say that is the most-needed socket after the PIC's. Why ? Because optos are shit, they break if you sneeze on them, and soldering direct to the board means you heat it up a bit. Could be a bad idea, especially for newbie solderers that might dwell on the pin too long. Better to just check the connections with your multimeter :)
  12. That's what I thought at first too... there's too many variables, it needs that human fuzzy logic thing going on. You may like to try freerouting.net, it's interesting to watch if nothing else...
  13. Heh that's full of parallel traces! Still the point should be demonsttrated to those unfamiliar with autorouter that nILS' layout is FAR more clean looking, and that's a good thing. And just to spark a new debate - I would have avoided the vias in a similar fashion to the autorouter. Moral of the story: Vias suck. And the autorouter can give you good ideas. But manual routing is much nicer in the end Now I'm being an opinionated troll :D But I do think that all sides of this discussion are valid and I think it's an interesting debate....
  14. Sweet :D My favourite part was 0:27... when the desoldering braid magically appears and disappears. I could almost hear you say "oops *** that's not meant to go there!" The braid had a very strong featuring at the end though :-\ ;D
  15. LOL
  16. Lots of good ideas there bunsen! Is there any chance you could go google warrior on some of those? Especially these: Circuit simulation with audio output; speaker design and modelling; simple 3D CAD; DSP design; architectural acoustic modelling; lots of emulators; ??? audio/MIDI over Ethernet/IP <-- great idea. Benderbuntu sounds fun! :D
  17. I can't see anything wrong with it. I don't know if your mods should work, but I see nothing that suggests that it should cause the midibox to reboot.... Timeline: Uploaded TK's hex files from the zip, unaltered, everything works *** Uploaded your hex, everything dies What happened in *** ? Mention anything. did you move the box? recable? New drivers on your PC? Just a reboot? Farted? you name it.....
  18. Had a look, did a compare.... Found a few minor editing errors but nothing much of note... OT: LFO costly? it's free software.....?
  19. That's not great... Could be worth looking in to. It's a big blue button at the top of every page :D Have you seen ucapps.de? That's where you'll find the midi troubleshooting guide, and I think it might be where you will stop next :) If you're not sure, click the link in my signature that says "Fix Bugs" and scroll down until you get to midi troubleshooting. Indeed you should. In that case you should be able to upload using the ports on-board.
  20. Truuue.
  21. Yeh that's what I was thinking... I've never made a deb package, but I can't imagine it being too much harder than an MSI or installshield... And there's a big-ass howto on their wiki. Oh I just realised, I forgot to post it in here. I didn't have the "just works" experience with fedora 9 at all I'm afraid. It was definitely a close runner up, but I don't think it's a good way to go, if I had problems with three of three machines :( (small problems, but ...enough) Before I put this on the wiki: remote desktop control would be awesome... and ubuntu ships with vnc which is nice, and it's easy to enable (don't want that on by default, security.....)but I'm wondering if some clever person has made a good way to remote control linux, and bypass firewalling/not require a port forward (virtual server, etc).. Would be ace for troubleshooting to be "in the room" with the person! Edit: do we even need that? if they can figure out how to get a torrent, they'll have setup a server.... and I'll be hosting the ISO as a torrent, so.... They should be able to forward the port for VNC, right?
  22. I'm guessing you already saw the wiki page, did the tests confirm that you have a bug-free 4620? If it's not bufg-free, you'll need a new one or IIC_MIDI If it is, then you need to do the midi troubleshooting guide :( Good luck!
  23. Sound like good reasons to me! Thx dude :)
