I need to pull out an old post: Uhm, what??? What point was the other end of that wire connected to? In a working Midibox ther shouldn't be any voltages you could possibly feel as a shock? So I'd still guess you've fried something. ok so far. question: what are you using for these measurements? A multimeter or an oscilloscope? The SI line (like the RC and SC lines) is a high frequency data line where you can only get very limited information from measuring with a multimeter. 5V unpressed sounds reasonable, but what you're actually measuring with a multimeter is an average value, so if pressing a single button changes the state so much, there's either a situation where most of the 128 (possible MIOS inputs that are scanned) are affected by a single button, or you're trying to short SI to ground with that button in this test? S

Do you know Sketchup (from google)? http://sketchup.google.com/ That's a nice little program which can do quite a lot even in the free standard version. It exports AutoCad, too. Versions are available for Windows and OSX. S

Ähm, das gehört ja auch so. der GND von den 9V wird mit den 5V verbunden, um eben diese 14 V zu erzeugen (siehe optimized Schaltplan). S

MTE, yes but what I think he meant is that the price relation is like e.g. 12.50€ and 15$ for a core module kit w/o PIC, so with the current exchange rates, buying from Smash is a bit cheaper (I won't talk about PCB quality etc again as I don't want to make it look like I'm dissing Mike on the forum all the time ;)). first, it's perfectly safe to use +-15V. In unipolar mode, the output scale doesn't change at all because the DAC generates its output from an internal voltage reference and the gain of the TL074s isn't influenced by supply voltage. The bipolar mode: The TLV output range is 0...4.096 V. The "bipolar option" just adds (-2.048V) to the output voltage to transfer the range into -2.048...+2.048V. The resistors around P9..P16 are chosen for getting a good but narrow adjustment range for zero offset calibration. By changing to +-15V, the adjustment range moves slightly downwards. In case all used parts have no tolerance (theoretically), the range would be -3.46V...-1.92V. So ideally this would be sufficient to be able to select -2.048 V. But as all parts have some tolerance in real life, it could happen that you can't reach -2.048V anymore on some channel. To be on the safe side, I would advise exchanging R33..R40 for 2.0k ones which would give a theoretical adjustment range of -2.83V..-1.21V. About what's the ideal output range of an AOUT: At least in unipolar mode, usually you want the output to be conform to the V/Oct standard, i.e. "more is better" isn't true here :) For bipolar mode, I suppose keeping that standard doesn't hurt either - honestly I don't have enough personal experience with modulars that I can tell you much on that topic. When you've found a suitable solution, please post some feedback with your experiences to this thread :) S

well that image doesn't contradict my post :) What I described is the example labeled "Volume Control" (which is exactly what we want to do with it, right?). The "Variable Resistor" usage does exist, but is not suited for your purpose - you can't completely mute an input by that construction and in any case there wouldn't be ground connected to the pot. No that doesn't make much sense :) A pot usually has the source signal at one end and ground at the other. the middle connector is the output. your idea would mean: when the pot is full left, you just override the resistor and connect the amp input to ground -> silence. when full right, you'd still not reach max volume because the pot also acts as a "normal resistor", i.e. pulls towards ground against the signal more or less depending on the pot value. So in theory, and as long it's only one channel, this would actually work to influence the volume. but with more than one of these channels, the output would be silenced as soon as any of the pots is turned hard left. A nice little mixer is e.g. this one: http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/monomixerpage.html you can omit the headphone amp portion on the lower right, and the capacitors at the inputs are not absolutely essential. Hallo, ausnahmsweise mal kein Midibox-Thema: Ich habe mir gerade einen neuen Ensoniq ESQ1 gekauft, dessen Firmware ich gerne aktualisieren würde. Die Eproms von meinem alten defekten ESQ1 sind leider tot, da ich sie mal versehentlich falschrum im Sockel hatte. Jedenfalls: Ich suche jemanden, der mir zwei 27C256 EPROMs brennen kann, also die alten mit UV-Löschfenster usw :) Vielen Dank für all die Meldungen :D Seppoman

Hi, I've just bought a few transformers from pollin.de - that's a cheap surplus seller - and at the moment they're offering a transformer that is perfectly suited for e.g. MBFM PSUs and all AOUT/CV stuff: http://www.pollin.de/shop/shop.php?cf=detail.php&pg=OA==&a=Nzg1OTk2OTk=&w=ODkzOTc5&ts=0 Input: 230 V~ Outputs: - 8 V~/1,7 A - 13,6-0-13,6 V/0,6 A (center-tapped) - 4,2 V/0,15 A Size: 60x52x57 mm. I won't use the 4.2V, but 8V is a good start for the 5V rail and +/-13.6V center-tapped is perfect for a bipolar 12V supply. Both generating relatively few heat from the regulators. And now comes the best: The price is 1.95 Euro :D S

I've got custom made ear plugs from Elacin http://www.audia-akustik.de/otoplastik_elacin.0.html. They were quite expensive (about 170 Euros) but really worth the money. you can get different filters with -9, -15 and -25 dB that sound almost linear. Very good for extended band rehearsals and clubbing. You can exchange the filters for in ear monitoring phones (I don't have these). The downside is that you still have a strange feeling while it's silent in the room like with any other plugs, so I wanted to remove them in every break or while discussing things with band members. Of course they're not suitable for mixing and I mostly didn't use them while playing a concert, but these (or similar, e.g. Hearsafe also offers custom plugs) are really the best way to protect hearing for musicians and 170 Euros is not much in exchange to not getting deaf at the age of 40 :) S

have you not heard that there are carpets that are not made of synthetic junk? :D Plus, I'm not wearing shoes while at home and I never felt any static discharge. Actually, as long as you're not in a large bureau with synthetic carpet while being covered from head to toes in polyester, I believe there's very little chance to damage normal electronic devices that are not specially known for being highly sensitive. I believe all this antistatic thing is a large hype to promote sales of antistatic this-and-that and for electronics manufacturers to be on the safe side (like the American "caution, hot" on coffee mugs - if the coffee wasn't hot I wouldn't buy it ;)). Thanks for warning me, but I know already and am willing to take the risk :) S

the reason why fixed sample rates for samplers are used is that this is necessary to be able to playback more than one sample at a time on a single DAC with independent pitch. IIRC, the SwinSid features six oscillators (?), so for variable rate playback, you'd need 6 DAC channels and mix the result in the analog domain. Apart from higher cost and parts count, I suppose this would also be more than what a single controller could handle - from the programming point, you'd need six independent 16-bit timers (the AVR has one) and would get in trouble with overlapping interrupt executions everytime when two timer events/sample playback points get too close to each other which would induce jitter. So I'd say, it's a good plan but will be difficult or impossible to realize without massively increasing processing power and parts count. S

I briefly thought about a quad board, but as Wilba said, MBSid doesn't support more than two filters per core so you'll need to have 4 AOUTs anyway. I don't think sending envelopes via CAN to another core would be feasible without impact on the general performance. Spaghetti factor is actually quite low. Except for the audio and bypass connection, you can put the ssm board side by side with the NG and just have a few short wires. Two is a good number in my opinion, suitable for the SID while not making the PCB unnecessarily big for people building e.g. only a single stereo MBSID. Also, on this PCB there would be virtually no parts to save with a quad version (ok, two polarized capacitors...), it'd essentially be twice the board as it is plus more complicated routing, i.e. more than double the size. And btw, this pcb is 8x5 cm, the few SSM2044 modules out there in the modular world usually are double the size with only one VCF, so I'm actually quite proud on the form factor ;) Except for a few wires less, there'd be nothing to be gained from a quad pcb. If you mean unneeded parts on the AOUTs, you could either build only half of an AOUT or an AOUT_NG with only channels 1-4 stuffed and only channel 1 and 3 with bipolar option. S
