    In case anyone else need to know:

    Please take a look at page 2 of this thread plus read the first post. In fact, quickly read most of the thread. It will tell you that you need to:

    • Create a user login on the Wiki page (it's hosted on another server) mentioned in the first post of this thread. Keep your name there the same as your name here.
    • After you've done this you can login to said Wiki and add yourself to the list using your identical handle both there and here so that TK knows that it's you.
    • Add up the total amount on the last row (more for ritual reasons I think)
    • Be aware that you also need to get a CORE_LPC board from SmashTV in the US
    • Get an LPCxpresso board (LPC1769) from Embedded Artists or Watterott

  2. You need to create a user in the Wiki since it's on a separate web-server. Then you can edit the page.

    After that is done you better make sure that you have PayPal or can get bank details if any are stated in the first post of this thread.

    Then you'll need an LCP17 core PCB from SmashTV and also the LPC Xpresso board that costs 20€.

    If you search the forum the latter might be available to hobbyists at Watterott in Germany.

    Edit: Someone hurry so that we'll hit 100 before Advent!

  3. Can't wait to have it finished :-) I started soldering diodes yesternight, can't really decide if I should solder by sections or by components size. If I get some silicone glue it'd be better to solder by sections but since I don't have the glue yet holding the small components while soldering them might prove a bit difficult, I'd say... Nevertheless, I'll figure it out somehow :-)

    When I did mine (with the help from friends - there were too many components to keep track of!) I first placed *all* the diodes on on PCB. Then I went on to all the resistors, then caps on that PCB one section at a time. There are still no completed circuits to speak of. I still checked for shorts between Vcc and ground each step just to satisfy my paranoia. Also, I measured all the passives before soldering them in place. Add all the IC sockets and pin headers so that all is done by height. There are still no completed circuits to speak of, but measure just to be safe. Add transistors. Measure. Still OK? Add ICs section by section. Check! I did the MCU and MIDI first so that I could check that part and get triggers and velo for the voices. I first faked triggers to each drum voice, then I went with MIDI notes. Last I did the outputs for listening and the pots. Before then I just watched the drum sounds on the oscilloscope - I recognize those sounds just by looking at the waveforms... Nerd alert! :geek:

    Still, there were a couple of errors that got by me anyway - the 3080 in the clap was broken. Replace and it started to sound like a proper clap. Then, there was an error with the crash or something - a R2R DAC resistor got mixed up so it had the wrong value. Interestingly enough no other resistor was off so there was no simple component swap. Phew! It did sound very crappy and nasty though. Distortion from hell idea...

    Lots of board real estate was wasted by the toms - I did them just for completeness - it's unlikely they'll ever see much use unless I want to cover the Miami Vice theme by Jan Hammer or any other 80's pop. I would have gone with moar claps or any of the other, fun voices instead.

    I'd like to get about 15-25 blue transparent and some 15-25 red transparent knobs if we ever came to a new bulk order.

    Meanwhile, if there's people out there in a hurry I could sell you a few white or gray knobs. References available on request.

  5. Hmm, I want to integrate one of those in my next TV so that it can boot the full MAME ROM set directly from some SDXC card :thumbsup:

    Then if it also did UAE and a decent C64 emu all the better!

    Total 80's nirvana would be if it also did a decent Juno-106 or some very plasticky Casio CZ sounds.

    Save from the intro reverb, I started to ask what hi-quality you were rambling about. Then it struck me: The mix hangs together very well! The NES sounds very lo-fi, but the guitars give it away. There are some really nice production values in here. By the outro we hear more guitars and it sounds very hi-fi. NES cat grants you some power-up mushroooms and an extra life.

  7. I have an MKS-50 and have been dithering whether to build a dedicated cs, or to use iControMIDI and an iPad. That would support several machines I have and some of my friends synths, but a real CS is fun...

    Choices choices. But, it's a great project nonetheless! Also, it looks like it won't cost a lot.

    This will be interesting for sure.

    Your stuffed plush animal did look very scared before you removed it. Or was it simply in awe of the MB-SEQ? Truly building a mystery there!

    If I wasn't too lazy, or held up with that modular thing at the moment I would attempt to build this. Or maybe draw a diagram.

  9. Well, the slight issue with the 4046 is that you need it to be under exponential control to be musically useful. Take a gander at the fine work of Thomas Henry who coaxes 7 octaves out of some PLL chips. Watch your brand! Matthias Herrman (Fonik) made some very nice looking PCBs a short while ago. The thing is that those make a complete VCO with it's own waveshapers. It has the nastiest sync sound I've yet to hear!

    You then need to send the square-waves (and nothing else!) through the 3396 waveshapers if you want to use that IC fully. Otherwise you'll end up with a glorified VCF/VCA combo better buiit using other means.

    You'd be better off if you could get direct control over the generation of square-waves for the timing of the 3396 VCO/Waveshaper. It's easy to set up a V/Oct VCO in your lab, but very much overkill for cost reasons. That's why lots of polys used timer chips under control of 8-bit micros plus several 3396's for the synth voices. It would be very expensive to use discrete VCOs, even VCO chips as the Matrix 12/Xpander/JP6/8 etc once did. Today you could get away with finding slightly dedicated MCU's such as the dsPIC and waveshapers and you've entered DSI analog territory.

  10. Hmm, this could make a fine NCO/DCO using direct digital frequency control. So, MIDI control would be possible. However, this looks like it's intended for high resolution motor control. It's possible that it can also go lower in frequency in the audio band. Note that it only outputs square and pulse-waves so you need a waveshaper in order to get any other waveform. The CWG is for more servo or stepper control trickery.

    But, add a CEM3396 or a similar waveshaper and you're good to go. This is what DSI (Dave Smith) is doing with the DSPic and the PA397 (later derivative of the CEM3396) in the Prophet-08, Mopho etc.

  11. The panel is close to done at Schaeffer. A couple of days in transit and... I CAN HARDLY CONTAIN MYSELF :frantics:

    Drill night on Sunday for the last home-etched PCBs (taking that to the factory is for sissies).

    Then, it's off to assembly. The engine roar upon ignition will dwarf anyting sent into space. Or probably just go bleep. We'll see.

  12. For a one-off personal design, the "classical way" is the way to go. The software is already written this way, and there really isn't a big savings in ICs. Here he's using 4 SR's - yes you could matrix it down to 2 SR's, but then you've gotta stick in 32 diodes and modify some code.

    AFAIK all the MIDIbox projects have the resistor to VCC ("pull up resistor"), but can be easily changed to the opposite logic. Check out the DIN schems on ucapps.de.

    Mmm, the matrixed version sure is trickier. Plus, if you don't buy loads of diodes, I suspect that you don't even save money. It's all pull-up to the bumper at ucapps.de it seems. Who knew, I was too caught up in my modular when I answered. Thus, I only said something about what I could easily check at that time frantics.gif
