What, he switched them around? heheheh what a weirdo.

Yeh... She's the only one who could say that. If you're going to take someone else's advice on what's good for her, you might as wwell take behringer's or mackie's or something and just buy one... Why doesn't she build it herself anyway? Like..... do we smell bad in this forum or something? Serious, where are all the girls?!?!

A plan for using a Palm PDA as a display for a MidiBox
stryd_one replied to fluke's topic in Design Concepts
Just my 2 cents.... If you consider the full capabilities of the system before you design it, then even if you don't want to use those capabilities right now, at least they will be simple to add later. If you build limitations into the system now, they're going to be hard to get out.... -
You're pulling my chain! I bought a few synths from him recently and didn't know that was him! Heheh. He's a very nice bloke for what it's worth, and swoppy is a bitchin store. I had to stop visiting them because I spent too much money :D I'm in Melburn and I'll be more than happy to help you figure this out. A LOT of people come by here with little or no electronics or musical knowledge, but they get by OK. It's an awesome community around here, everyone is really helpful. I'm sure you could pick it up and do it yourself. This is a DIY community after all ;) Otherwise, you're in a tricky position. Without TK's approval, anything MIDIBox related cannot be legally used to make money... This means that you're not going to be able to find anyone to make one for you, unless they're generous enough to supply their expertise and equipment and do a few month's work for free - and if that's the case, please tell me who this person is so that I can hire them ;) If you're happy to make your own, but need design advice, then you've already found the best spot for that :) These forums are rockin friendly and chock full of guys who know mad amounts of stuff :) Jimi you asked about the cost of this. Long story short, DIY does not necessarily imply low costs, and that is especially true if you are a newbie.. By the time you've got all the required tools, materials and other equipment, and gathered all the knowledge required to get started, expect to have spent a few months and a few thousand dollars at least. Some will argue (and fair enough) that you could case your gear in a tissue box and use a $5 soldering iron, but yeh.... You get what you pay for ;) Of course once this initial outlay is made, then each project you make breaks down that overhead, so some cost savings can come into play over time. I'd say that if you cut some corners on tools (but not on safety gear!!) and go for a cheaper control surface (IE don't get professionally made laser cut powder coated panels, make your own from plastic) you could probably break even on a S/H Mackie.... But IMO the point of DIY isn't to save money, it's more about what you get at the end - those things that money can't buy - a whole bunch of knowledge, a feeling of pride in your work, and a device entirely customised to your specific requirements.

According to wikipedia LOL. Bunsen I know you already knew that... Let me guess, you looked it up anyway, just to make sure you didn't make a goof of yourself on the forum? ;) (or am I the only one who does that?) I'd like to think anyone calling themselves a musician would have invested enough effort in training to know that one without looking it up ;) Maybe I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old man ::)

What I'd really like to see is a flexible, extensible, and most importantly portable and re-usable software framework that would enable people to make custom midi controlled analog synths and FX without having to create a new application from the ground up. There seems to be a lot of synth/fx talk around, but nobody seems keen to tie it all together and make it accessible to the masses :(

IIC_MIDI anyone? :) -
Have you looked at sid_cc*?

Thanks for dropping by Andrew! You're one of those people who's names I already recognised when I first started reading about DIY FX, not sure how you got famous, but you are ;) The subject of voice recorder IC's has come up around here before and lord knows how we've managed to miss the ISD IC's time and time again, especially when the synth and FX DIY community have already done it. For those who missed those threads, in a nutshell we had two hurdles that made the designs impractical - frequency response and latency. As Andrew has already demonstrated in the PayBack looper the ISD can be kept powered up and this gives a trigger time of 300usec so latency is clearly not an issue ;) It's a darn shame that it isn't possible to adapt (externally augment or bypass and replace) the antialiasing filters so that we could clock the device faster to get a better samplerate and therefore better frequency response... I'd love to quadruple-clock the thing and get 15 seconds of 32khz samples. But ignoring the low frequency response, this IC could be really useful... Midibox control of the control and address lines could introduce a lot of cool features like tempo synced loops, setting sample lengths before recording by time or by beats at a given tempo, chaining a few of the IC's for more samples, etc etc. Hey with crafty use of a noisegate (to gate the input when readdressing the IC inbetween recording each slice) you could make an automated beatslicer with the thing....hmmmm Anyway this is getting wayyyy off topic now, but I thought I'd share those ideas seeing as this IC has come to light around here. Could make a top addition to the MBFX projects :)

I think you meant VCO, but yeh unfortunately they are supposed to do the same thing... At least, that was the original intention (don't believe me? Check out the name of such a patch on any old synth, it'll be called vibrato), but we all know it's not the same.... The human will out-vibrato the machine any day - and that's exactly my point.
-
Alright I'll do the code this week then - It got a bit complex for a quick bit of coding on the weekend, but it should keep me busy on the tram ;)
-
That's what the human being does :) (or should do) ;) I guess what you're saying is that 'shuffle' adds rhythmic variety, not that shuffle emulates humans, who add rhythmic variety. To me it's 'chicken or the egg', I just haven't heard a drum machine shuffle that's up to the job..... But hey that's just me :)

Do you mean the values it sends from the MBSID MIDI Out when you push those buttons? Or the remote control inputs? Going strictly by looking at the filenames, I'm betting you want cs_menu_cc_table.inc :) Sorry mate, it's late, I've been coding all day, and my brain is mush, I could be miles off ;)

Burning bootloader 1.2 on pic18f4620
stryd_one replied to bill's topic in MIDIbox Tools & MIOS Studio
Awesome!! Thanks Bill! :D Did you have to make any configuration changes or anything, or did it just work out of the box? -
Hey, I can use this code too, it'll breathe new life into my once-upon-a-time top notch KX76... Honestly I just spaced out hehehe ;) Exactly. Fortunately the router project leaves a fair amount of RAM to play with... Obviously with the IIC modules we could feasibly use the 4620 too which has oodles of RAM, but I don't think that should be necessary (depending on how many keyranges we want to assign of course) LMAO :) any other ideas you can think of?
-
Always the way :'( It's that, or lose the job and have all the time in the world and no money....D'oh!!
-
You think? Almost 2.50 for 2 LEDs seems a bit steep :( From the pics and from what moogah said, it seems like the base has the facilities to hold an LED anyway, all we'd need to do is drill the cap :)
-
That's a bit short on power yeh :( You might get away with it but I doubt it.... Is it possible that your meter is out of alignment?
-
Sorry mate, FWIW, I have no idea, so I didn't reply.... But I am sure that I've seen this subject elsewhere on the forums before, so maybe that's why you haven't gotten any replies?

Oh crap I totally forgot about that!! So sorry!! Man I feel like such a space cadet right now. I just put it on my list for this w/e. I'll consider the UI when I take breaks from coding, but one feature I know I'd like is to set the range by holding a button and hitting a key. We also need a way to set the keyshifting. The keyshift would work like this: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zone1 = MIDI CH 1 Zone2 = MIDI CH 2 Zone3 = MIDI CH 3 Zone4 = MIDI CH 4 Range = C1 ~ C3 Range = C#3 ~ C5 Range = C#5 ~ C6 Range = C#6 ~ E7 Shift = 0 Shift = -24 Shift = -1 Shift = -37 (No shift) (2 Octaves) (1 Semitone) (3 Octaves+1 Semitone) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outputs Channel 1 Outputs Channel 2 Outputs Channel 3 Outputs Channel 4 Range C1 ~ C3 Range C#1 ~ C3 Range C5 ~ B6 Range C3 ~ F4 Obviously that's too much for one screen but it was an easy way to lay out the text. We really need to decide on the full featureset before laying out the screen. I thought of another feature... Quick re-mapping of modwheel and pitchwheel (to other CC's and to (N)RPN's respectively. Feeding modwheel/pitchwheel/velocity/keyscale as an input to sysex? Actually those two features could go together... Have a matrix thing; take one of modwheel/pitchwheel/velocity/keyscale as an input, and insert the value into either a MIDI CC, Pitchbend, (N)RPN, patch change or sysex string sent to outputs. You could have a split which acts as a controller sender... Each key gets a CC# and the velocity is sent as the CC value... Then you might as well throw in a few pots/encoders/sliders/buttons/all of the above as well, you could use those values with the same engine mentioned above. I'm just making these ideas up as I type so it's a bit fragmented, but am I making sense? What do you think of these ideas?

You're the tone god? Yerh I saw that IC on smallbear and was curious but I couldn't find schems to go with it... At a glance it seems a midibox looper would be possible.... hmmmm ;)

MIDIbox of the Week (Clockbox and MIDIbox CV by Sneak-Thief)

:D Bitchin' That clockbox is on fire man! and the modular is a great match with it :) Yeh, wow. :o -
Hey JD, They are nice hey :) I always liked those ones with 2 LED's in them, but theyre $4 each! Can I ask a favour?..... If it's possible to do it without destroying the switch, can you take the cap off and take a snap for me so I can see how hard it would be to put a LED in there? :)
