  1. Visited a retired plastic / model worker (guru!) today to get some real advice regarding my custom case build. Was really cool and helpful old guy! See my blog entry for the story :)

      Termoplastic or fiberglass?

    3. technobreath

      technobreath

fiberglass :). Gelcoated that is. CS is special, it's gonna be coated with hexcel texalium cloth (which looks like blue carbon fiber cloth) covered by epoxy.

thanks for the documentation, will be also interesting for model plane builders :)

  2. Ordered new laptop. XPS wasn't sold anymore, so I found a new alternative. Inspiron something something special edition something. Promising. And u know what - I didn't pay ANYTHING for it! :D

Yes, there is actually... It's two steps. Step one: Get lots of money from a guy who u barely met, step two: Go to webshop of ur taste and order the laptop. ;). that's the short version :).

    3. Hawkeye

      Hawkeye

Can you elaborate on how step one was done? :D

Hehe. Yes I can, but I'm not sure it fits the profile of this site, so u got to ask me privately, and then maybe if I know u well enough, u can haz the entire story :P. lol

Hehe. Yeah, i know - jet engine is the right word - and u can heat a cold cup of coffie if u put it next to the hot-air-vent. My laptop is a new dell i7 - was about the most powerfull I could get from Dell when I got it some months ago. But Inventor is the first thing I have seen that makes it go all hot like that hehe. I was trying to learn Inventor as I have background in Solid Edge - a slightly different workflow, but very nice. I also drawing up some gm5 cases hehe - but I can't submi...

  5. About all schools in the district is closed, I have 80cm snow in my garden. No chance of digging out the car at all. It's only a coincidence that I had to stay home with sick kid today, but I would never make it to work today anyway. I hit the snowy streets with my backpack and actually walked to the grocerystore. Took tons of pictures - super nice! - Snowfall 12.12.12 will never be forgotten!

Hehe, this kind of snow is extremely rare in my area - I live by the coast of south-west, and here we're lucky to get 15cm or so, and even luckier if it doesn't rain away the same afternoon. So this is extraordinary. The former snow record for this area was set in 1961. And yesterday that record was broken in a massive way. Now I wait for the blizzard to wear off, and the rain to start sometime later tomorrow! :)

    3. jojjelito

      jojjelito

Don't hog all the snow Norway! Sweden needs moar for an even fluffier X-mas :D

      technobreath

I'll gladly ship some to your front yard! My whole property is full of white shit! And I'm sure it will all rain into some dirty slurry by the end of the weekend, and the piles will not rain / melt away for months. I told missus, when the blizzard / snow fall is over I'm getting a big tractor down here and transport away all of the shit. Don't need a swamp in my garden the next 6 months! So - yeah - u can have some! A lot! :D

  8. Come home from work, say hi to kid and missus, and go upstairs to the studio to do something about the sudden strike of inspiration that hit me on my way home. And I hear from downstairs: Are you going upstairs now? we dont get to see you? I says yep. Simple answer to a tough question? :P

      technobreath

Hehe. I soldered most of the mb6582 in the livingroom. So I know the answer to that - there's a reason why all my electronics gear and studio gear ended up 2nd floor :P. So I guess it's with her as with most women - they "want both" :D

    3. Hawkeye

      Hawkeye

Yeah, that is a known problem - you have an inspiration moment, you can be sure the lady calls for attention - she won´t call when you have no ideas :)

      inspiration moment?

My wife needs my help exactly at that time

  9. After reading nils' link to nikolai tesla comic on fb today I know I am a geek myself. Yesterday missus went all "fred-come-to-bed" on me, and I told her - nah.. this pcb needs to be soldered first :P

  10. Finally W7 on the studio PC. finally possible after I got rid of the mbox1 ghost. Means more ram, SSD running. Formating the e PC gives the same feelining as cleaning your room :D

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that one a try. I used to be all into viritual stuff, but midibox opened my eyes :D. It's something about spending time in this enviorment - it gets to you :P

yes, me prefers hardware, too, but when it is unaffordable (ob-x) and an emulation is that good, listen without watching and try to tell which is the vst and which is the original :)

    4. technobreath

      technobreath

Hehe, I haven't got enough experience with oberheim to tell the difference in a blind test. But critic listening: There are minor differences that I hear - sometimes - but not in any way does the vsti sound bad. Worst case, only a little bit different, but that is a completely other thing than bad sounding.

  11. has been building studio furniture to go with the new interface. Added a 4 i/o midi interface, a gigabit poe switch. After two week of waiting for the TI chipset firewire controller, finally I find myself searching for xlr cables to hook up everything. Before two would be enough :P.

    4. technobreath

      technobreath

hehe. Well, I have the two SID synths comming around, and possibly a FM too in the not so distant future. Then I probably need to buy another smallish keyboard controller too :P

  13. Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on it's way. Now only a new laptop is missing to make my gig-rig useable again. Finally decided on dell xps 17, which digs deep in the pocket, but will be worth it Im sure!

Wow, didn't realize you could get touch in that size! That's why I use the 12" screen... It's got the wacom pressure sensitive pen and touch. (it's not dedicated to music.. just my general laptop) I think it's silly to purchase a computer w/out touch, these days.

  14. Have been spending too much time actually composing music lately, no time to turn on the iron. The rest of the week my music gear is sitting at a stage somewhere waiting for the gig friday night, maybe I should seize the day? :D

very cool! can recommend the purchase of a standalone sd audio recorder for gig recording, they are getting cheaper every day and are more reliable than crashy laptop sounddrivers :)

    3. jojjelito

      jojjelito

Yups! Get a dedicated audio recorder or a Nagra if you want to flash.

    4. technobreath

      technobreath

hehe, yes, computer interfaces has it's glitches and pops, no doubt about that! We might have to look into something like that later on. We have had a playing break for a long time while people build houses and raise babies :P. Now we're almost back, with a couple of new members. So it's still rusty - like in dirt brown colored rust! :P

  15. Man, I'm having a hard time finding a low-cost PIC programmer to push some code onto my many 18F452 - suggestions? USB would be rather nice :)

Try not to rush it. It is much harder to find and correct any errors than to double check everything during building.

    3. technobreath

      technobreath

Nopes, rushing isn't a good idea :). I just soldered a pic socket the the wrong way... not the biggest misstake, but certainly enough to slow down even more!

    4. strophlex

      strophlex

I soldered some resistor arrays the wrong way on my MB6582, that's worse.

  18. Just started to train myself in pcb routing :). Had to get started with a simple circuit, so I made a layout for 8 banksticks on a very compact board. No bigger than the space that the ICs themself takes up. Next up is the mixer circuit for my stereoSID. Wish me luck.

      technobreath

Hehe. Some neighbours are worse than others. I don't mind a little life in my neighbourhood. And so does my neighbours. I often play loud music (el. guitar or making dance music) with windows open hehe. Gotta harden the neighbours a bit :D hehe.
