  1. damn foona!! i have a pseudo trekkie wife and you have an electronics minded girlfriend! schweet! i too am jealous of the metal cutting friend BUT i'm a skilled carpenter already, so i've got that going for me! ;D
  2. yes. i'm not sure what a standard Midibox LCD cable is but if you wire the LCD up correctly, it should work with just about anything. :)
  3. she's alright. she has her quirks too, so we're pretty easy on each other!
  4. hey neb. i'm probably going to have to update my address if the 18th is the ETA. i'm moving on the 23rd. i'll find out what my address is and i'll PM you. cool?
  5. yeah, i just finished the entire TNG series! it was almost a month solid! my wife bought it for me for my birthday a couple months ago...
  6. okay. i'm just going to get very familiar with the POKEY. i'll read the datasheets, etc a few more times over so i can get a grasp on this chip. then maybe i'll be of more help. :)
  7. have you tested the SID(s) from the "Mike" PCB's IN the "Smash" PCB's not WITH the "Smash" core or vice versa? it sounds to me like the SID or SID's you have in the Smash setup may be faulty... also, with the Smash kits (i don't know about Mike's), you have the choice between 2 different filter capacitor sets depending on the SID you use. you may have the wrong filter capacitors on the board. 3rd, what preset are you testing them with? if there is any sort of filter set on the preset and one or both of your SID's have faulty filters, it's most likely not going to make a sound. Lastly, you may have the wrong voltage running to your SID's OR you may have a problem with your PSU OR your "Optimized PSU" circuit may have shorts/problems... just a few things to check. ;D
  8. every so often an encoder can become a little "loose." i'm not sure where in the forums, but somewhere there is a sort of tutorial on how to "tighten" up an encoder. try "encoder mods" or "fixing encoders" for a start. i'll try and search and post back here if i can find it. what is most likely happening is that when your encoder passes one of the contacts it is also gently hitting the opposite as well causing a sort of "back-slide" if you will. i had the same problem with my MbSID. i'm a little under the influence of alcohol at the moment but as soon as i am able i'll get onto that search. ;) ol' buhler, always "drunk posting!" [edit] BTW it's only 10PM(22:00) my time so no "starting early" jokes... [edit2] well the post i remember was actually more along the lines of removing the detent but just in case: http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,10184.msg84244.html#msg84244 there it is. ask ganchan for any further details. sorry i couldn't be of more help! :-[ as far as "tightening" the encoder, just adjust the contacts to they have more grab. i.e. bend the "fingers" a little more than they already are so the have more of a chance to catch and touch the other contacts... i don't think there is really any problem with the firmware or the IC's just maybe the sensitivity and responsiveness of the encoder itself.
  9. YESSSSSSSS! i think i'll keep it since you and foona and nILS dig it. i just wanted something "star treky" seeing as i'm obsessed with star trek: tng. ::) thanks for the affirmation dudes!
  10. awesome!! maybe once i get a hold of that, you can point me in the right direction and i can help with the programming and get it running smoothly with a MIDI controller etc... whatever i can do!! ;D i'm totally open and excited to learn so i'll figure it out if you get me started! [edit] what app/firmware is it based on?? SIDv1.7? i can try messing with it now if you have some sort of shell you are working from...
  11. Awesome!! thanks for the info! i was about to buy the 8MHz version!
  12. thanks man! ;D i would've used "sonic decimator" but Frostwave already used it for one of their products...
  13. not yet. i need a core and a POKEY taylored app. how far along on the programming are you? i'd like to help as much as i can but i fear that the most i can help is testing whatever you do... ::) thanks stryd! you always make me feel a little less "newb." :D
  14. so, i considered the names "Sidhler" and "SickStation" and even "MbSID((STEREO))" but i just felt that none of them quite captured the essence of the dual SID sound. until i stumbled upon this while daydreaming: Stellar Implosion Device mkII. i felt that suited the dual SID sound a little better as well as satisfied my sci-fi needs. what do you guys think? [edit] btw, thanks for the comment TD!! ;D
  15. Well... here's Veroboarded POKEY module number 1! i guess this would be considered the newb way but i don't have access to a PCB etcher nor do i know how to use Eagle or something like it. i actually have been having a lot of fun veroboarding my projects lately! ;D now i'm building POKEY module number 2 and scrounging up funds for a Core module + parts and another LCD, DIN and DOUT. let me know what you think thus far! thanks to nILS for doing the hard part of the work for me!! ;D [edit] i know it's ugly but there is some semblance to the layout of nILS' etched prototype...
  16. nah, i'll wait for you! ;D i've got a big move in 3 weeks and i'm working on other projects, so it'll be a little while. good luck with the job man. that's rough, but with an attitude like yours, i think you'll be just fine. ;D

    SwinSID Review

this is awesome!! i'm getting very excited! ;D thanks for sharing this!
  18. thanks bugfight... i really hope someday we can be friends. ;D i know i'll get a slap at some point!
  19. i didn't mean to cause dissension among the ranks... i am completely interested in these chips but i just wanted everyone to be cautious before they all jumped on these... that was definitely my first inclination, "quick! gotta get some!!" anyhow, good luck with the testing LSD-25. we are all here to help if you need it. ;D
  20. don't let it happen again!!! ;D nah, this thread is close to death anyhow. next time let the 'shrooms make you do it...
  21. aaahh. just a condensed version? i just haven't come across something like this yet... thanks bugfight! say, do you think you might be able to give me a slap? foona's been hogging them lately... ;D [edit] these newb questions are gonna keep comin' i guess... new question: do the capacitors correspond to the VCC and GND of each IC and the Oscillator? i.e. 6 caps corresponding to 5 IC's and an oscillator. i'm a little confused by the schematics in this area. sorry once it's cleared up, i should be ok... i understand that they are all in parallel but it seems like that wouldn't really work out correctly if i were to actually build it exactly that way. to me, it makes more sense to have each VCC and GND of each IC connected to a corresponding cap. correct me if i'm wrong.
  22. hey nILS. i finally got all the parts i need to build the POKEY module BUT i still have a newb question to ask. i consider myself a fairly descent reader of schematics but what does this section of the schematic mean (see attached)? i understand that there are 6 100nf capacitors, that's obvious, but what are the other connections?
  23. i don't think smash has any "old" schematics or "old" pcb's, everything is current... as far as MIOS goes, if you do use smash's stuff, you will be setup just fine for the most current version of MIOS.
