  1. you guys make me unhappy with my setup.. :( maybe someday i can get enough room for some stuff like you guys have. when i post my MbSid pics i'll post a pic of my workspace so you guys can make fun of me. ;D i love the spider stryd! [edit] are the 0.001% tolerance cut resister leads references a joke that i'm not getting ???
  2. foona, i've been on the xoxbox mailing list since december... i still haven't been notified but i'm sort of over the whole xox thing sooo... if you want i can give you my notification info if you want my spot when it comes along... it's a thought. i don't want to waist my spot in line, but i don't really want a 303 any more. i don't really have a use for it. i may just build it and then trade/sell it or something. i am definitely into a Moog style synth though!!
  3. i have about a day's worth of work left... i had to re-do the button layout under the face panel which set me back a little time. i'll post pics on Monday. i'm stoked to have it finished!!! ;D i need a little help naming it though...
  4. i'm about to order a core kit from smash... i still need to know what IC i should use, is it the 18F4685?? thanks.
  5. man... that's awesome! you got the special treatment foona!!! ;D
  6. i more or less meant that there was more room for error on my part... ::) in fact, you are correct about the 4 pin oscillator being a pierce oscillator. i just couldn't figure out what resistors and caps i would need... ;D
  7. MMMMMM... nothing beats getting some stryd_kisses...
  8. way to go foona!!! i'm almost done with my case too! woo hoo!!
  9. is this the oscillator i want? http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=2FvjVE%2fO2XABym18KDCGoA%3d%3d i read that the pierce oscillator was a little unreliable so i thought i'd try to find the one i needed at mouser. [edit] also, i can't remember what IC you are using on the core. is it the 18F4685?
  10. well... for the most part yes. i was just being stupid, but a little part of me wasn't joking because i felt a little guilty about relying on my workaround for so long. "stryd's golden rules" can really get under your skin after a while and i'm usually not one to half-ass things at all. eventually i decided to face my fears and figure out exactly what was going on with my LCD and it paid off!! basically, i just wanted you to know that i respect you and your knowledge (as well as everyone else who have given me pointers) and i didn't want to seem like an arrogant newb. i really look up to you guys. you guys can do a lot of really really awesome stuff that i really want to learn. i don't mean to get all sentimental but you know what i mean. thanks again TK, wilba, stryd and everyone else who helped me out. ;D
  11. 8580/6582 have a lot more "pronounced" filters. they are complete. the 6581 was pre-maturely released, meaning it was incomplete... the 8580 was the upgraded, completed chip and the 6581 was the redheaded stepchild. i personally love the 6581 but then again, i only play electro rock and not techno.
  12. wtf??? that takes too much work. i'm here for the chicks!!
  13. no prob man! i was like, "20 more knobs!! :o what am i gonna do with those???"
  14. OK... upon further investigation and the reading of countless threads (maybe 5 or 6), i came to the conclusion that the unconnected Data pins D0-D3 needed to be grounded and that was what i was doing by connecting those four pins to there respective locations at J15. i can't remember who said it first but NorthernLightX is the guy i remember off the top of my head. anyhow, i felt guilty for connecting the 4 data lines to J15 so i disconnected them and grounded them and it works perfectly once again! ;D i'm writing this for 2 BIG reasons. 1. to add a conclusion to my super-über-newb thread and 2. to get on stryd_one's good side again... ;D so now, it's off to the drill press to make a face plate and post some pictures of my new MbSidv2(((stereo))). for those who haven't gotten to the LCD issues yet i say this: i got lucky and found a PLED that runs in 4-bit mode. do not follow my lead and do what ever you are told by the guys that know what they are saying. i hope i can help people as much as i have been helped. i'll post pictures soon. i am now going to venture into the land of Atari and try to harness the infamous POKEY with nILS... :D ;) p.s. forgive me stryd!!! for i have sinned.
  15. Eddie, you sent me a second paypal invoice today for just 20 red knobs. i think you may have me confused with someone else and their order. if you need more info, let me know.
  16. Congrats Man!!! ;D good luck!!
  17. at the 5VDC junction you are getting close to +5V correct? if so i would 1. switch out the diodes for a Bridge rectifier (i don't know if that would make any difference but that's what the schematics call for) and 2. check the pinout on the male 7 pin DIN from the c64 psu and find out if you have the correct pins connected. after all this, if you are still not reading ca. +14V at the SID junction, you may have a problem with your regulator... that's my best guess. i hope that helps. i'm not an expert, but i would definitely try to get the circuit as close to the schematics as possible. the 25V cap should be fine but the diodes i have no idea... [edit] i don't know if this is just an error on your drawing or not but the 2200µf cap's +(positive) side is not connected to the 100nf cap on the +5V circuit..
  18. man, i would love to be a part of this also. i'm trying to do my best with nILS MbPOKEY but i would a much wiser person if i started from the beginning as you are. i'm trying to learn C from Fluke so that will hopefully help. i want to be a helpful person to the community, not a leach, so i would love to help with this. does saratronics sell the SAA1099 with their kits? i'll google it and see if i can source a few... ;D [edit] here's a link to the datasheet: ('http://www.tranzistoare.ro/datasheets/1150/493200_DS.pdf') [edit again] the only problem with saratronics.com is that they already did the component side of the fun. i would really like to figure out a circuit for something sometime, like nILS did with the POKEY... i guess i'm probably dreaming.
  19. ah. i see. i guess i'm going to be a newb for longer than i thought!!! thanks for the links! i am curious though, i usually get my components from mouser, what abbreviation is the 4 pin oscillator? i know that i have to stay away from SMD like the plague. i learned my lesson on that one! thanks again. [edit] is there a formula for figuring out what values the resistor and capacitors need to be in a Pierce Oscillator?
  20. i would definitely check the optimized PSU circuit. start there. i was so anal about it that i built it THREE times!! if you have subbed in components that aren't in the actual schematic, then you should check with someone if those are valid substitutions as well. i really think all signs point to the PSU circuit. i would start with the DIN jack and work your way back through. make sure the right pins are going the right places...
  21. what Junction do you have the PSU plugged into on the core? did you remove the 7805 and plug it into J2 or whatever that was?
  22. it's definitely your PSU. i wouldn't plug it in again until you've got it right. from the J1 connection on the SID PCB, i wouldn't go as low as 4.5V. i would try and get it as close to 5V as possible. it sounds like something isn't right with your wiring on the PSU. make sure the right leads are soldered to the right places on your 7809. that could be one problem. also, since you have three c64 PSU's, if you get the same reading from all three, then it's definitely your optimized PSU circuit. you're lucky that you have three working c64 psu's. i have 5 and only 2 work at the moment. i would definitely start with the +14V(+9V in your case) because that seems to be where the SIDs problem may be. i hope that helps.
  23. hey nILS, i have a question... my oscillator(crystal) has only 2 pins. do i connect both to Pin #3 of the 74HC74 or just one? i assume one pin of the crystal goes to GND and the other to VCC? thanks. also, the last post you did with code in it, i believe on page 3 of this thread, is that the final app or at least one that will work?
  24. TOO much. with wilba and the 6582's the only SID "remakes" i'd be interested in are 6581's. i love the raw, distorted filter... call me crazy. :P
  25. i know this has nothing to do with the C64 but i have sequencer software as well as a midi interface for my Atari 600XL. you can buy it from Best-electronics. it's called the Wizztronics Midimax. it works really well. i definitely would recommend it to anyone with an Atari 8 bit. i just modded my XL with double POKEYs and a composite video/stereo sound output. i LOVE that comuter. i'm in the process of learning BASIC so that i can try and turn it into a synth (although, RMT works really well on it along with it's double POKEY compatability!) instead of a controler. i have yet to find a good MIDI sequencing program for my C64 (aside from maybe MSSIAH) or my Apple //c.
