  1. I don't trust myself to do intelligent things all the time, nor do I trust people who work with me in my studio. For this reason I would consider using a DIN connector with more pins, or D-Sub, or the alternate 5-pin DIN layout, rather than the same connector that we use everywhere for MIDI. Of course that's just me. Also: what kind of transistors are you using for the gates? Are you sure you observed the correct pinout? The negative voltage rail on the AOUT should not have any effect on the gates.

  3. It looks like it would probably work, but assuming you already have a SID PCB, it would be more trouble than it's worth because the pinout is different. The normal round rectifier used has AC "inputs" at opposite corners, while the device you suggest has both AC inputs on one side. This would mean you'd need to do some "bendy legs" tricks and use some extra wire, and it would probably be a mess. If you don't have the prescribed regulator, you could easily make do with four 1N4001 diodes, wired to the terminals as shown in the SID module schematic. (If you look at the rectifier in the schematic, it's drawn as 4 diodes, which is all a full-wave rectifier really is). If you are already 100% certain you are running DC on to the SID board, and you are careful enough to ensure you have the correct polarity (+ to + and - to -), you could even omit the rectifier entirely, and just use a couple of little jumper wires in its place.

  7. Hi, I have almost finished my in-depth post to the "bulk orders" forum. I've been home sick this week and I haven't got much done. The bulk will be for P401 black soft, P301 in colours chosen by the group, and a small pointer knob in colours chosen by the group as well.

  10. Bought a Six-Trak a few days ago on eBay... it's probably already in Buffalo waiting to be picked up. If all goes according to plan, this, along with a MIDIbox64 front panel, will make for an excellent component of my live techno rig.

  18. I'm slapping together a MIDIbox CV. My boards are complete and I'm about to hook everything together and fire it up. Since I have plenty of spare DIN pins, and my enclosure is well suited for it, can I edit the main.asm file to include up/down buttons AND an encoder? Also: looking at the descriptions of the forums here, I find it vague as to where we should discuss specific issues pertaining to projects like MIDIbox CV, filter/processor etc. Should we have an additional forum for "other ucapps projects" besides SID, SEQ, FM, HUIs (64/LC/16e)?

  20. Interesting. I don't actually have a Six-Trak, but I just assumed the sequencer could sync to MIDI. I'm looking to pick up one of the 2 keyboards. Then I want to build a MIDIbox64 with a virtual front panel of all the parameters - essentially the same for both synths. The problem: I know that the Six-Trak is capable of doing real-time parameter changes using CC messages. As I understand it, the Multi-Trak is not - but maybe it can do it via SysEx? If so, that's cool, but if not... I need to go Six-Trak. The Multi-Trak adds velocity, an extra octave on the keyboard, a sexier design, a slightly improved sequencer, and a stereo chorus on the output.

  23. ^^ agreed, nothing sounds identical to a TB-303 (although I've never tweaked a x0xb0x with an actual BA662, I bet it's pretty damn close). The TB-303 oscillator has a great, full-spectrum sound quality, with lots of bass and lots of upper harmonics too, especially on the square wave. The filter resonance sounds like nothing else on the planet. The envelope decay is extremely snappy, and its tweak range "feels" just right. The overall sound has a characteristic analog punch that has never really been duplicated. The TB-303 sequencer is sort of cool, with the accent and slide, but forget about editing it on the fly, live, in any controlled way. Pitch slides are awesome when used strategically. The "accent" function can be used to introduce subtle or insane timbral variations. Despite all of this, I honestly think that the 303 was already played out 15 years ago. Its sound is unique, but as tired as the Fairlight orchestra blast and DX7 Rhodes that dominated 1980's pop. The difference is that those who have Fairlights and DX7s can still use them for other stuff, but the 303 is essentially a one-trick pony. MIDIbox SEQ could be tweaked to be very much like a TB-303 sequencer if you really wanted. But since the rest of a good 303 clone needs to be voltage-controlled analog, IMHO it's beyond the scope of the MIDIbox platform. Three different AOUT modules already exist, and there are zillions of 303-ish DIY clones on the internet which can be controlled by MIDI or CV. A TB-303 clone would stop being a MIDIbox after the CV outputs from the AOUT board - after which it would just be another 303 clone. True MIDIbox synths (SID, OPL3, SpeakJet) connect the PIC/CORE with external, digitally interfaced synth hardware. The chips they are based on could not be used as musical instruments without some sort of microcontroller, so the existing MIDIbox projects fit the bill. Also, people are currenltly exploring SwinSID, CORE-as-DCO, SN74677, and no doubt other PIC-interfaceable synth engines. Personally, once I get my current MBHP projects finished, I have long-term plans to teach myself coding for MIOS as I develop a wavetable-sweeping front end for Korg DW6000, and then later learn to interface with the (IMHO underrated) CEM3394. Vintage chips are fun to use in new ways, since many of them have as-yet unexplored sound possibilities. There is so much more to be gained by forging new ground rather than re-hashing sounds of yesterday, further contributing to the music industry's overall creativity deficit. I'd frankly rather be shot in the head before hearing "Higher State of Consciousness" one more time. Instead of making another 303, why not focus on making "the next" 303? (Just a thought)
