And the old guy hobbles in after the young punks...
-
Wow, finally catching up on the forum, and I see this... The only thing I can say is that I have sent all parts out to everyone who has sent me money. (Well, that, and I'm sorry I got sick - I had some heart issues, plus I've donated bone marrow twice this year for a leukemia patient, and they're threatening to do a complete knee replacement on me. On top of that, I have an 18 year old daughter (!), my brother-in-law just left his wife of 17 years and 14 year old kid so I've been family counselor, and I've been doing alcohol intervention with a close friend...) Anyway, I still have some SSM chips left, so if anybody is still interested, I'll be happy to work something out with you. I'm on a business trip until the 11th, but I'll be able to collect money and send parts the week of December 14th... Regards, Doug

Exactly! Mock up picture at the bottom of http://www.midiboxaddict.com. Details will be at http://www.nine-oh-nine.org (to match http://www.eight-oh-eight.org of course!)... -
MIOS Project - Oberheim - M1000 XPANDER {PCB traces uploaded}
Doug Wellington replied to Artesia's topic in Design Concepts
Sounds like a fun project! Alas, I'm neck deep in other projects right now, and if I don't ship them soon and get some cash flow, I won't make rent. I don't think my wife would like that... :o I had already started working with the 3396 chips, so I'll join in with you when I'm done with this other stuff... :) -
What is the difference between AFM and FM?
Doug Wellington replied to Green Xenon's topic in Miscellaneous
I'm trying to dredge back into the dark recesses of my mind, but I think "AFM" just has more waveforms and algorithms... -
Man, I remember coveting the SY-99 back when it was still available new. (1991?) The chance that you'll find a new one is approaching zero. If you're absolutely convinced that you want a keyboard that you can load samples into and then use them in FM synthesis, the SY-99 is the only way to go. There are a couple problems that I'd like to point out. There isn't much sample RAM built in to the SY-99. Back in the day, they made 512k sample expansion cards, but they are more rare than the SY-99 itself. There was (is?) a German guy who made an expansion card - his company is called Musitronics. If you do get an SY-99 and want his expansion cards, you'll have to check the revision of your SY's CPU. Older CPU's only support a 3MB card, whereas newer CPU's can support a 5MB card. Something else to think about is that it is *REALLY* slow to load samples into that sample memory...! Once you have the samples loaded, it's a big task to learn how to effectively use AFM. FM is hard enough on its own, and adding samples definitely increases the programming difficulty. Now, if you don't mind doing without loading your own samples and you're happy dealing with what's already in the box, you might consider getting a TG-77 and play it from some other keyboard, one that you can buy new. Another rack synth to consider would be the FS1r, which has FM and Formant synthesis. Not quite the same as an SY-99, but still quite nice. If you can do without a hardware synth, there are quite a few interesting FM soft synths out there. Check out Zebra, Sytrus, and FM8. You can find a nice selection of FM stuff at: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=results&st=f&x=0&y=0&q=FM

Hi everybody, thanks for all the good thoughts! I hope you'll also send good thoughts to the leukemia patient that I'm helping too. I actually don't know who he is, all I know is that he's a 57 year old guy with leukemia, and I just did a second bone marrow donation for him. I encourage everybody to check out marrow donation - you could save somebody's life with not a lot of trouble on your part. Please contact me via email or PM if you want to know more, or you can check out http://www.marrow.org. (That's the US site, I'm sure other countries have similar programs.) Interesting thing is that I had a complete physical when I did the first donation and that's how I found out about my own health troubles. I'm glad for that, since I probably would have only found out I was in trouble *after* I had a stroke or heart attack! :o Anyway, I've been getting back up to speed in both the kit mill and the wood and metal shop, so I'm hoping to have some good news for you guys soon. I need to finish up the MB-808 kit, as I have a lot of money tied up in parts for that project! As soon as I get the cash flowing back in from that, I'll be able to get the rest of the parts for the MB-6582 panels and other projects I'm working on...

I'm not sure if even listening to Rhianna would get that out of my head...

Heehee, I actually gained weight during the process - I'm over 115 kg now!!! Yeah, I can't think of a better Christmas present to give anyone... 8)

Anyone interested in Alps "N" type motor faders?
Doug Wellington replied to Doug Wellington's topic in Bulk Orders
I think I'm finally done with the trips to California for work and bone marrow donation, and I have time off during the holidays, so I'll get back to shipping faders after Christmas... Thanks for being patient! -
Hiya guys! I'm back from the bone marrow donation. Everything went well, and today (the 24th) the recipient is getting his infusion! Send your good thoughts his way... I don't have to work between Christmas and the new year, so I'll be sending out invoices and shipping everything during that time. (I've got a lot of catching up to do, please bear with me!)

Gmail? Ugh... If you want to contact me directly, please use my midiboxaddict address...

Umm, I just searched for "jimh54" in my email box and in the PM list here and didn't find anything. When did you email me?

Synth Cloners Brigade... Because we have to!
-
Why not? ;) Seriously though, I want something to match the x0xb0x and MB-6582, and I want to have more space for mods... EDIT: and heck, I think I can put it together for cheaper than you can buy 606's for anyway!
-
All I have to say is wait until next year when I finish my 606 clone in a PT-10! ;)
-
Yeah... I'm sure it will be fine in the end... It's just surviving the in-between part that sucks... Might not be that painful - instead of the direct marrow access, they decided to do a PBSC collection on me, which means I'll sit in a bed for about seven hours, hooked to an aphoresis machine - it takes blood out of one arm, extracts the stem cells, then puts the blood back in my other arm... The worst part is going to be keeping my arm straight for seven hours...
-
Nah... Probably my emotional involvement in my 17 year old daughter who is doing stupid things at the moment... Sigh...
-
OK, I'm done for the day. So far so good... I have lungs, I have a heart, I have a little less blood (they took ~12 vials of blood for testing)... Only problem is that my blood pressure seems to be a bit high (160/95 last week, 147/97 today) but that isn't going to get in the way of me donating...
-
Heehee... Maybe, "crack a hip" or "drill a couple holes in your pelvis" or likesuchas...! :) OK, finishing breakfast now, they pick me up in a little bit... I'll let you guys know when I'm done for the day...
