My pleasure! spread the word! I re-spam that link with a friendly email to everyone who spams me without using BCC these days...the more people that know it, the better. God only knows what the sense is in hiding that option by default....

DIY audio patchbay with digital routing....How hard?
stryd_one replied to Nomical's topic in Design Concepts
Zactly!! Being 8x16 is no issue, given what tilt has demonstrated above... What is the cost of the buffers likely to add up to for that though? If you include the cost of the 32 opamps and the extra board space etc, how does it compare to the AD chip (which has the buffers on-chip)? -
True!! Nope, the stupidity isn't new. What good? It hasn't changed anything. Look at the situation with China and Tibet, to use a present instance. The whole world is protesting. Is anything happening? Nope. We still support them by buying cheap goods and services from them. Look at Africa.... Now look at the middle east. The world goes to war when one country does a "bad thing" and ignores it when another does the same. It's unjust and everyone knows it, and we supposedly live in a democracy, so why isn't it happening that way? Fact is, the populus is powerless, because it's passive. All the information in the world doesn't change that noone uses it. Same goes for our tools. Look at what an amazing invention the car is. So what do we use it for? Same with computers in general, old analog technology, metallurgy... You can go back for millennia and the story is the same. People learn new things and nothing ever changes. The tools are used for superficial junk. A select few live well, the masses live minimally and just get by, unhappy with the state of things but unable or unwilling to change it, we all push out babies and they do the same. People have to do that, because the rich people in the world take more than they need, time is money, and these tools save time. But hey, I guess it wouldn't be so bad if we were enhancing our capabilities with what technology allows, for some kind of real purpose... But what's really changing? People are born, forced to do a job they hate, maybe scrimp enough to have a home and a family, so that they can have kids who can do the same thing, repeat, ad nauseum. The human race lacks a goal. Even if we wake up tomorrow and the news tells us that a technology breakthrough has brought us the meaning of life, endless food and water and shelter and space and time, and cures for every disease and injury, and time travel, and whatever else you can dream of...then what? What will we do? Sit around and have fun and then have kids so that they can do the same thing, repeat, ad nauseum? What are we really doing?

DIY audio patchbay with digital routing....How hard?

I know that you used a scaled-down example and understand why :) Damn if I expect you to quadruple the size of your ASCII art ! So yeh, no need for the thrice-over drum-in. That's just rude :P Funnily enough your ascii art didn't quite explain it to me but when I went to the schems as a reference I saw the 4x4 chip layout and suddenly 'got' it - as well as the matrix outputs being combined like you drew, each input is split into X amount of busses going into each chip horizontally - and suddenly I understand the need for the input buffers! Yay! And less stress about specs! Yay more! Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. It's only because of dudes like you doing stuff like that, that I was able to understand the schem this time around. I guess I'm learning something about all the wires behind these screens after all :D Totally. Where'd you get that from? Remember me saying to bunsen that he was after a mixer? ;) Of course, maybe you could always just reduce the input levels at the source (turn your synth down) .... But anyway I wasn't talking about doing that, let's move on :) Thanks! -
Yay, pr0n! Remind me to ship you some cable ties ;)

Buh? there's only 5 there... I gogled and searched prodigy but no joy... Can you give me the lowdown?
-
Sounds great dude, thanks!

is channel 1 otherwise useless when using lc protocol?
stryd_one replied to ultra's topic in MIDIbox HUIs
So, in a word....routing ;D Edit: I was thinking more about routing channel one only, to a 2nd virtual port in the PC, connecting Live to that, and have your instruments watch the real channel one... But whether you split it at the physical layer or at the channel bytes it's all routing. -
Not sure if you're too late, but Sure you can! Everyone can :) Did you log in? Same login as the forum...

Hahahah yeh there are a few big commercial offerings out there... Seen the pricing on those though? Ouch! More reasons to love midibox :) -

Think bigger dude. Think 64x64. Think 128x64. Think 256x256 (I wish). Now you're thinking in my league. 256x256 would just take care of my requirements but would not leave much room for future growth. You don't just add them 'vertically' as you have, but also horizontally. Sure, not everyone wants one as big as that, but it's better to aim for the top of the mountain and get 2/3 of the way up, than to aim half way and make it ;) This is also the reason why 16x16 IC's are such a big deal. Sure, you can use 8x8 chips in a matrix to do the same thing, but.... Quality takes a dip. -
See? If that were on the wiki, we'd have fixed it!

I'm glad you're looking at these specs. Something worth considering: Crosstalk does not cause such problems when you expand the matrix by chaining IC's, because the neighbouring channels change... Distortion, however, cascades and increases with every IC it passes through, as does noise. That's an interesting idea I haven't heard thrown about before.... -
Welcome aboard! ;D Excellent documentation. Crying shame that he didn't put it on the wiki where it belongs :( I've said 1000 times it seems, that off-site documentation is bad, because it tends to disappear over time, and is harder to find (won't turn up in any searches), does not get updated, cannot be updated by other users, etc etc. I could go on all day. Please feel free to turn it into a wiki page and link it in there. Just copy and paste the text, apply some formatting, and email the images to MBWiki.Upload@gmail.com and I will put them on the wiki for you. No need for a sticky though, IMO. PS - you can edit your posts. PPS - Maybe when you edit your first post and remove the second one, you can fix the link (remove the trailing "/"): http://www.danielprice.org.uk/synth-diy/sid_2.htm :)

Now wikified! :) "Golden Rules of Troubleshooting"
-
Good advice. Also a big "Don't" - Don't cut ground cables. See my sig, rule #7 ;)

I Just don't understand, I should be getting signal!
stryd_one replied to el_cuc0's topic in Testing/Troubleshooting
USB power is already regulated 5V DC. Yeh you bought a PC with Windows on it, that should do everything, right? :D That chip only has the bootloader and MIOS - that's the operating system, not the application. Then you haven't read enough. Read the wiki. Read ucapps.de Follow my signature's advice ;) When you do, you will find the midi troubleshooting guide. Do that. All will be well in no time ;) -
Done the midi troubleshooting guide yet? Can you paste the results? (I think there should be a big flashing banner at the top of this page that links to that page heheheh)
-
HEhehe totally Waldorfian :) Look forward to seeing this thread grow!

One word: Routing.
